Obama Gives Queen An Ipod. Seriously? Updated With Bush’s Gift

This morning, I started writing a post regarding the G20 meeting, and was going to ask “what entinty will be the first involved in an Obama gaffe? This can be a person, a group, country, etc.” Was pressed for time, never got to finish and post it. But, hey, we have the first of what is surely to be many by President Neophyte. As far as I have been able to determine, this is NOT an April Fool’s Day joke, as so many media outlets are covering it. Besides, this is the exact kind of neophyte malarkey Obama would actually pull

Barack Obama met the Queen at Buckingham Palace today and gave her a gift of an iPod loaded with video footage and photographs of her 2007 United States visit to the Richmond, Jamestown and Williamsburg in Virginia. In return, the Queen gave the President a silver framed signed photograph of herself and the Duke of Edinburgh – apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries.

The Queen already has an iPod, a 6GB silver Mini version she bought in 2005 at the suggestion of Prince Andrew.

UPDATE: Pool reporter Richard Wolf of USA Today says that an Obama aide told him the President also gave the Queen a “rare songbook signed by Richard Rogers“.

Now, perhaps the songbook gift might have been nice (I’ve never heard of the guy), but, seriously, he’s meeting the Queen of England, and the best he can come up with is an iPod? Seriously? Her Majesty seems to be into tech as well, apparently being a big Wii fan, but, couldn’t Obama have come up with something a bit better? Maybe something cool from Hawaii. Or something for her Corgi’s.

I wonder if it had pictures of Obama on it?

Update: even Obama’s limo driver (isn’t that bad for global warming?) is now going gaffe

It’s not every day the American president’s driver is told to move his bulletproof car.

But Queen Elizabeth II’s handlers made the request Wednesday after President Barack Obama’s reinforced Cadillac limousine was found to be blocking the garden entrance driveway at Buckingham Palace.

Heh. Also, check the photo’s of Michelle. I usually have no problem with her sleaveless stuff, whatever floats her boat, but, come on, not when meeting the Queen, and, dahling, might want to go easy on the plunging neckline next time. Provided Her Majesty bothers with you both again.

Last update, I promise. Don’t want to go all Glen Greenwald or something. Via American Digest

UPDATE: What did the George and Laura Bush give to the Queen when she visited in 2007? Commenter Eric Blair has located this list a Raymond P. Martinez hosts Ask the White House

President and Mrs. Bush gave Her Majesty a bronze statuette “High Desert Princess” with a personal inscription on the bottom of the base. It is a replica of the original life size statue that is located in front of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Ft. Worth, Texas.

President and Mrs. Bush gave The Prince Philip an exclusive sterling silver eagle box by Tiffany & Co. with personal inscription on the inside lid.

President and Mrs. Bush gave Their Majesties a leather presentation box filled with a collection of documents from the National Archives. One of the items was a copy of an original letter from President Roosevelt to her father, King George, written in 1938. There were also photos from previous royal visits and a DVD of the footage from the Queen’s visit to the United States when she was Princess Elizabeth in 1951.

A commenter at Ace says, “Wow, we were really lucky to get rid of that Texas hillbilly, and miss out on that Alaskan chick, huh?

    Oh no he ditint….

Could this couple have any LESS grace, LESS class, LESS manners than they have?
    It’s a joke.

It’s like ghetto rich. Pimped up rims on a Civic. That’s the obamas.
    sigh.

  2. bbbustard on April 1st, 2009 6:13 pm

Now the Queen gave the Obamas a signed picture – of herself.
Richard Podgers wrote the music for some pretty big musicals – The SOund of Music, The king and I, South Pacific, Oklahoma – to name a few. He also wrote some songs – “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered”, My Funny Valentine, the Lady is a Tramp.
Haven’t heard of them either? As a patriot, you will of course have listened to his “Victory at Sea”
He was one of two people in the world to have won a Tony award, a Grammy award, a Pulitzer Prize and an Oscar award.
Because you do not know he is, does not mean that the Queen doesn’t. It is totally appropriate to give a gift celebrating American Art. It’s a shame that you are not a proud enough American to learn something about it

  3. Greg on April 1st, 2009 6:15 pm

This is an April Fool’s joke, right? Right? Please tell me it’s a joke. Because the President of the United States couldn’t possibly be that clueless, right?

  4. marymary on April 1st, 2009 6:22 pm

Just the signed songbook would have been fine. The I-pod is incredibly tacky. Tacky, tacky, tacky.

  5. gus on April 1st, 2009 6:37 pm

bbustard, apparently you are as stupid as your King his Trajesty Obama. The problem with fools like you is that you don’t smell your own stench.

  6. bbbustard on April 1st, 2009 6:43 pm

Thanks gus – really informative comment. Her previous i-pod was music only – no video, according to this site’s link. So how tacky was it to give her videos of her visit to the U.S.? While Bush was President? Seems sort of gracious to me.

  7. Vermont Neighbor on April 1st, 2009 6:59 pm

The songbook was an interesting idea. The Ipod isn’t really the weird thing, even though it’s right off the store shelf. Loading it up with video from her previous visit is just weird because the Queen’s had a lifetime of looking at her own news footage. It’s novel and new for the Obamas but not for the Windsors. I’m not an Obama fan at all, and this is the only time I’ve said anything in his defense. His gift selection today is superior to his work so far in office. See you at a Tea Party on the 15th…

  8. Reaganite Republican Resistance on April 1st, 2009 7:04 pm

Obama has no more social grace than you’d find at da Bears game- and surrounded by sycophants, who’s going to point-out his ineptitude?

And is there some anti-British sentiment coming from Obama due to Kenya’s history as a British Colony? Some grudge there?

I couldn’t believe the cancelled photo-op with Brown and the tacky DVD-boxed set gift of “ET” and other crap… Don’t you think he’d have watched that by now if he was so inclined? And now an i-pod for the Queen? -nice touch, lol

These anti-British stunts should tell you whether Obama, in his heart, considers himself more Kenyan-African, or more American. A REAL American wouldn’t have sent-back the bust of Churchill that was in the White House and insult our wartime ally.

    http://reaganiterepublicanresistance.blogspot.com/

  9. bbbustard on April 1st, 2009 7:05 pm

Thank you Vermont neighbor – the Obama’s did not commit a crime.

  10. bbbustard on April 1st, 2009 7:11 pm

A REAL American would not obsess about the presents being given to the Queen of England. These are not anti-British stunts. You’re the ones trying to pull off silly stunts.

  11. marymary on April 1st, 2009 7:57 pm

    bbb:

you should invite the other posters to your website if you want to show them “silly stunts”
(against conservatives of course, you are the far left according to YOUR website). Who’s kidding who here BB? LOL

  12. bbbustard on April 1st, 2009 8:15 pm

I make the website really obvious. No Attempt is made at hiding anything. ( I actually think I have nothing to hide)
But pimped up rims on a civic? That’s low. Is that you?

  13. marymary on April 1st, 2009 8:53 pm

Yes, pimped up rims on a civic…that just about sums up the president and his bride. Lipstick on a pig? Can’t shine shyt? Can take the man outta chicago but you cant take the chicago outta the man …..well..you get the drift.

By the way: Bush presented the queen with an antique box with a rare document, a letter to King George from an American president (sorry, don’t recall right now) and an inscribed tiffany box for Prince Phillip. In addition to a American Indian sculpture, also rare and unique.
That’s taste, class, thoughtful. I get the feeling Michelle put more thought into her wardrobe change than the gift.
And I didn’t vote for Bush so it’s not because I think he was a great president. But I do think he had class as did his wife.

  14. Vermont Neighbor on April 1st, 2009 9:31 pm

Oh, and THE WARDROBE. All this fawning over fashion when the media just rammed it down Sarah Palin’s throat – a candidate completely new on the scene who needed professional attire. Michelle Obama’s jewelry has been damn pricey and totally ‘off-message’ for the sacrifice her party preaches… the hard times her husband warns about.

All women in the political spotlight need to dress accordingly. To Sarah Palin’s credit, she was a true reformer working successfully against a corrupt state system… she didn’t have the expensive clothes required for herself or her kids. The media’s treatment was totally unforgivable, even by standards of liberal bias. Michelle’s arms are beautiful but the gorgeous Palin was a Backwoods Barbie? Riiight. HYPOCRISY overload.

  15. marymary on April 1st, 2009 10:13 pm

    Vermont: EXACTLY!!
The press was so vicious to Sarah Palin, and still they bring up her clothes, the Russia comment, her beautiful baby was even brought into the attacks. It was disgusting.
Now, when anyone critiques the ONE, well, we are racist, we’re practically rabid!
Well, I have never had an unkind word to say about a President until this one. And he deserves every ounce of my scorn.
America, you’ve been duped. Our great-great grandchildren will pay for our stupidity.
PS: I voted for Romney, then McCain (default choice) so don’t blame me America.
PSS: I love Vermont. Gorgeous and the citizens of Vermont are just wonderful.

  16. AL LUONGO on April 1st, 2009 10:30 pm

LOOK,LETS FACE IT “BO” AND HIS WIFE Are just hillbillies and I don’t mean to give a hillbilly a bad rap. Either they are just 100% cheap or don’t have any class .Maybe both, how insulting. It goes to show you what he and his wife feel about our strongest allies.Between how “BO’S wife looks in her finery and his ghetto saunter why should we expect more. All “BO’S” wife needed was a big yellow hat with a red rose on it and she would like she just came from Rev.Wright Sunday service. Those two probably said after the election”what just happend we won,WE FOOLED EVERYBODY what idiots”.He was right you fools who voted for him deserve what you get.But it will effect the whole world, but that’S the most.IDIOTS,IDIOTS,IDIOTS.Thats all I can manage to say also stupid.

  17. Tyrconnell on April 1st, 2009 10:34 pm

Included on the ipod, Obama speeches…

And 40 Rogers and Hart showtunes.

  18. xerocky on April 1st, 2009 10:48 pm

I think the point is that Obamby gave the Queen a gift that wasn’t entirely correct. It’s not really anything more than that. It’s not a crime… but he’s not the most diplomatic person to our allies, now is he?

  19. marymary on April 1st, 2009 11:04 pm

    PHOTOS OF HIS INAUGURATION?????
Dear Lord in Heaven, doesn’t this moron have anyone in his posse with a brain to tell him how ridiculous this is? Or does he surround himself with like minded narcissists? I lost my breakfast watching 4 minutes of that crap.
How could so many Americans be so STUPID???

  20. AL LUONGO on April 1st, 2009 11:59 pm

The QUEEN NO DOUBT HAS ALL THE PHOTO’S SHE NEEDS ON HER VISIT TO THE US. SHE HAS A PHOTOGRAPHER WITH HER ON ALL OF THOSE TRIPS.DID THAT CLOWN AND HIS WIFE REALY THINK THE QUEEN AND HER HUSBAND GAVE A TWIT ABOUT HIS SPEACHES AT HIS SWEAR IN AS SENATOR AND PRESIDENT. THEY COULD LOOK AT NEWSREALS. WHAT ARROGRANCE ON THE PART OF “BO” AND HIS WIFE TO THINK THE QUEEN WOULD REALLY CARE ABOUT SPEACHES HE RECITED WHEN HE FIRST SAW THEM ON THE TELEPROMPTER.THEY COULD READ THEM IN THE NEW YORK TIMES.I COULD JUST SEE THE QUEEN PUTING AN EAR PIECE ON TO LISTEN TO AND SEE HIS DRIVELE.HE AND HIS WIFE ARE HAYSEEDS.I WILL PREDICT “BO” WILL RESIGN FROM OFFICE IN DISGRACE WITHEN 2YEARS. HE WILL BE DISGRACED MORE THAN NIXON OR CLINTON. BUT CLINTON GOT LUCKY, HE REFUSED TO RESIGN AND LUCKED OUT. THATS ALL I GOT TO SAY FOR NOW. AL

  21. ClassicFilm on April 2nd, 2009 1:04 am

With two gift gaffes under his belt now (and a few snubs), I can’t help but wonder why Obama doesn’t have one of his adoring minions do some research and then shop for a meaningful gift for foreign dignitaries? I don’t expect Obama to spend time laying in bed at night worrying about what to give the Queen… after all, he has a Constitution to rip apart and an auto company to run. But in all fairness to him looking like a total classless dolt, doesn’t anyone on his overpaid staff have any background in public affairs? In foreign affairs? In international diplomacy? In the hospitality industry? Anyone? I thought this was Joe Biden’s area of expertise.

  22. MLewis on April 2nd, 2009 1:32 am

He also gave the Queen a rare signed songbook from Richard Rodgers (winner of thirty-four Tony Awards, fifteen Academy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize, and two Grammys, composer of the music for Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music, and member of the famed Rodgers and Hammerstein) He also put this music on the ipod. The fact that you’ve never heard of him and focus only on the ipod says much more about you than Obama’s choice of gifts.

  23. marymary on April 2nd, 2009 7:26 am

    MLewis:
I know who R.Rodgers is…what is your point? Even with the book, it’s a tacky gift. And to fill it with HIS speech, Oh my, you’d have to be a narcissist like Obama to think that is an appropriate gift. This gift should symbolize AMERICAS love and respect to the Monarch. Don’t you get that?
He has once again embarrassed the American people. And by the way, a curtsy would have been appropriate on Michelles part, especially in light of the fact that she is a foot taller (and wore heels !).
These are the details that are important in protocal. I cease to expect Obama to be even dimly aware of traditional hospitality. Afterall, he never really had a stable parent to teach him to look OUTWARD.
He’s like a 17 year old in his view of the world, it’s ALL about him. But tell me, is there NO ONE in his massive administration who sees the world differently? I think not.

  24. Floridan on April 2nd, 2009 8:58 am

“And by the way, a curtsy would have been appropriate on Michelles part . . .”

Didn’t we fight a revolution to, in part, stop having to bow to monarchs?

  25. bbbustard on April 2nd, 2009 9:10 am

You are aware that Laura Bush did not curtsy either, and I am sure that you criticized her for it as well.

  26. ghisfr on April 2nd, 2009 9:33 am

People think Elisabeth (queen) is GOD; waouuu, give me a break. She is a human being, and can listen to music too. An Ipod is good for her, when ageing she can enjoy music and obama’s speech. I never liked this guy Obama, now I fell he is on earth, I appreciate it. Who think Elisabeth is God can go kill himself.

  27. Mary Lou Welz on April 2nd, 2009 9:48 am

The Queen has told off The Ugly Americans (James) before.
The one that made me cringe was the bama taking her hand with both of his.
    Class dismissed.

  28. marymary on April 2nd, 2009 9:59 am

I am aware Laura Bush didn’t curtsy, neither did Nancy Reagan. I thought it was wrong then too although the fact that Michelle towers over her added to the argument that it would have shown true grace on Michelle’s part. And why was Prince Phillip practically pushed out of the photo op?
Look, this is alot about respect, protocols, they may seem “foreign” to us, may seem “old fashioned”, but I think attention and knowledge of tradition and graciousness are important traits in our diplomats. It shows deference to the Queen, on her turf. Meanwhile, Obama nearly cowers with our enemies….just illustrates a lack of knowledge, experience and intuitiveness about how to be the leader of our country. And ultimatley it makes us less safe and less respected worldwide. It’s not the ipod, the DVDs, the curtsy, the touching, it’s the composite of all of theseand many more indicators that he is not the man for the job, neither is Michelle the woman for the job. end of story.

  29. marymary on April 2nd, 2009 10:02 am

Meanwhile North Korea is launching and Obama is just getting around to thinking about it. Been too busy shoving spending bills down our throats then running off to hollywood to sell it to America. Putz. Dangerous. In over his head.

  30. Richard on April 2nd, 2009 10:47 am

Obama should have included pictures of his real birth certificate from Hawaii, or his trip to Kentucky when major portions of the state went without power for a month due to the worst ice storm in the state’s history, or his trip to North Dakota to survey the flood damage and possible entire loss of Fargo…Oh wait, I forgot.

  31. RealPatriot on April 2nd, 2009 10:59 am

These two truly put the “ass” in embarrassment.
Citizen of the World? How about Citizen of the Ghetto!
Well, comrades this just proves once again that you can take the Thugs out of the Ghetto but, you can’t take the Ghetto out of the Thugs, Princeton and Harvard Educations not withstanding. I guess if these clowns are going to be an embarrassment to this Country, may as well be a complete emabarrassment. I see no benefit in “Half Steepin’” If you have absolutely no sense of Tradition and Etiquette, then HIRE SOMEONE THAT DOES!!

  32. Bartom on April 2nd, 2009 12:10 pm

Exactly Nancy and Laura should curtsied and so should michelle[On second thought i wouldn't want that thing curtsying lest i wanna gouge my eyes out with a CD]

  33. Bartom on April 2nd, 2009 12:11 pm

    shoulda curtsied*

  34. Kelsey on April 2nd, 2009 1:47 pm

I found a video that stated Michelle Obama broke royal protocol. Apparently, Michelle Obama hugged the Queen when they were leaving. The British media is having a field day with this because no one has ever even dare touch the Queen.

    http://www.newsy.com/videos/breaking_royal_protocol/

  35. RM on April 2nd, 2009 2:45 pm

Maybe next time, BlackBarry should just give her a Blackberry (his beloved mini-teleprompter).

  36. Gus on April 2nd, 2009 5:14 pm

You’ve never heard of Richard Rogers? Cultural illiterate. He’s one of the Queen’s favorite American composers.

  38. Cheryl on April 2nd, 2009 7:12 pm

Well, Mary, Mary ….. aren’t you grateful George Bush had his “handlers”, because he was one of the most “classless” presidents this country has ever seen. He’s lucky he didn’t get decked by German Chancellor Angela Merkel when he “familiarly” came up behind her and tried to give her a “neck massage”. All his “fanny pats” and “back rubs”, etc. with foreign dignitaries was crass and disrespectful.

It doesn’t surprise me that all the Republican corporate-owned media continue to nitpick and try to find fault with the Obamas at every opportunity.

  39. marymary on April 2nd, 2009 7:29 pm

    cherylcheryl: hahahahahahahahahahaha!
REPUBLICAN CORPORATE OWNED MEDIA???? YOU MEAN GEORGE SOROS???
    GET A CLUE.
The media is IN THE TANK for bambi.
I am not a bush fan, never voted for the man.
But the viciousness…you know I shop at whole foods and there were bush bashing greeting cards at the check out during bush’s reign. Now can you EVER imagine an obama bashing greeting card at whole foods???
    Libs=THIN SKINNED NARCASSISTS

  40. marymary on April 2nd, 2009 7:31 pm

And so you think obama bowing down to practically obscene levels to the Saudi King was a GOOD thing? I just wonder if Obama was wearing a blue suit…

  41. William Teach on April 2nd, 2009 7:33 pm

Cheryl=Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush

Hey, marymary, notice that none of the Obama Zombies can actually defend the gift?

Gus, I’ve heard of Rodgers and Hammerstein. The story said simply Rodgers. Sorry, I’m not big into musical theater like you.

  42. MLewis on April 2nd, 2009 8:45 pm

William, I think most of the Obama Zombies could care less about a gift to the Queen. The fact is, the author stated she had never heard of Rodgers and Hammerstein. You don’t have to be that bright to have that name ring a bell. A rare songbook, signed by one of the Queen’s favorite composers and an ipod filled with his music as a gift, will only have negative political traction with wingnuts. And I’d be willing to guess that you are more the musical theater type than I am any day, if you take part and defend the whining, wimpy, and scared sounding posts on this board. Worried about the proper etiquette to use around the Queen sounds pretty musical theater lovingish to me.

  43. William Teach on April 2nd, 2009 9:42 pm

No, MLewis, I, the author, said I had never heard of Rodgers. If you look at the story, it did not say Rodgers and Hammerstein. Perhaps I should have added in the post that once I looked it up, I understood that Rodgers was part of the famous duo.

Perhaps the songbook was nice, and something she would appreciate. I did enjoy Dracula (Frank Langella was in it when I saw it, I believe,) and Spamalot was great. Otherwise, na. Rather go see Iron Maiden or some Beach Music or something. Perhaps Jeff Dunham. That is some funny stuff.

Still, an iPod? And one made in China? With narcissistic photos and vids of Obama?

But, I’ll give him this: must not be easy to buy for The Queen of England.

  44. marymary on April 2nd, 2009 10:03 pm

Just read this….and it’s true, brace yourself…”Send in the Clowns” was on the Ipod given to the Queen…so embarrassing.
Cripes, can’t someone pull the battery on Air Force one or something and let them stay out of America? Oh, but then we’d have gaffe master dufus JB as prez. Yeah, pull the battery.
I wonder if the Send in the Clowns was the background music to his Inaugural speech?

  45. MLewis on April 3rd, 2009 12:11 am

Perhaps the author should have learned from the Royals website that Elizabeth and Philip used to hum these songs to each other when they were courting.
Perhaps the author should have looked up who Richard Rodgers was before saying a rare signed songbook and iPod with his music was a weak gift.
Perhaps the author should have stated that the Queen requested an iPod to update her 2005 iPod mini6G and likes to listen to it on her walks.
You all should watch the video that shows the Queen initiating the caress with Michelle. And for all you etiquette freaks, only British women curtsy.
One more for the road and I’m out of here (this is no place for a libertarian). When Bush used to meet with Saudis he would kiss them, but if you are really so offended by Obama’s bow so be it.

  46. Bartom on April 3rd, 2009 1:14 am

Spoken like a true obamabot by the way the clintons were paaid off by the saudis too[Thanks to jihadwatch for the tip]But i don’t see you making a stink and of course this is no place for a libertarian like you because you support the aclu in dismantling us from within

  47. Sue on April 3rd, 2009 7:17 am

I’m here to DEFEND the GIFT!! The Queen loved it, she actually loves show tunes and the President and First Lady researched it and it was a very well thought out gift! So There, na na na nana!! idiot Obama haters…

  48. marymary on April 3rd, 2009 8:49 am

    ML Lewis:
They may have hummed “my bologna has a first name..” too. Would that make it a tasteful gift if loaded on the Ipod?
It was and is tacky. Michelles groping of the Queen was tacky…
Of course the queen “liked it”.. she problably likes marshmallow peeps too…again, would that have been a fitting gift for the Queen?
You guys have no clue. Blind adoration for a teleprompter. Right now, he’s giving a speech and he’s screwing up lake crazy cause I guess the prompter is giving him a hard time.
Meanwhile, America is suffering from his lack of clarity and punishing sucessful business in this once great country. He is a fraud. The wrong man for the job.

  49. MLewis on April 3rd, 2009 12:00 pm

Wow, point out some stuff from the Queen’s own website, and get responses back about Clinton being paid off by the Saudis, being called an obamabot, some really deep thoughts about my bologna has a first name and marshmallow peeps. I’m surprised your deep political insights aren’t gaining more traction. C’mon, I never once stated any political views. I personally think it was American’s turn off of wingnuts like you all and Hannity and Rush that got Obama elected more than anything else. I just think the story is shallow silly journalism. I mean you have to really love propaganda to defend a story that rips on Michelle Obama for wearing a sleeveless shirt and then right under that sentence shows a picture of her wearing a sweater with sleeves.

  50. Mutaman on April 3rd, 2009 12:07 pm

You’ve never heard of Richard Rogers?

  51. Why on April 4th, 2009 8:14 pm
