Hollywood’s New 3 Stooges: Benicio del Toro, Jim Carrey and… Sean Penn??

OK, now by that headline you are most likely assuming that I am calling del Toro, Carrey and Penn Hollywood stooges and making fun of them. Of course, we already know that Penn and del Toro are stooges on the “useful idiot” level, but you may wonder why I am slapping Carrey? Well, I mean it in the strictest sense — that Hollywood is casting for a new 3 Stooges team and these are the three Nyucks under consideration. It is del Toro as the new Moe, Carrey as the next Curly and Penn as our favorite nebbish, Larry.

But leave it to Hollywood to take the funniest threesome in Hollywood history and make a muck of it. This isn’t really the 3 Stooges at all. See, it is a “new” one, set in modern day, where three guys sortta, kinda like the 3 Stooges find each other in an orphanage and start a comedy team bringing them fame and fortune.

See it’s a “fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges’ gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu.” Aw geeze. “Updated for a modern Milieu” tells me that they haven’t a clue what the Stooges were about in the first place. Can you say “straight to DVD”?

Who can bet we’ll get a PC Stooges all neurotic over their “portrayal of violence,” filled with angst and driven to dark introspection? It’ll be a brooding, dark “comedy,” right?

I can see it now, del Toro as an illegal immigrant Moe that thinks he’s a “funnier” Che Guevara, Carrey won’t be able to stop mugging long enough to give his lines (like most of his other movies) and Penn will be a gay Larry, high on heroin, and going on and on about “the oppressed” every time you turn around. They’ll all be in therapy for “anger management” and end up working at a Starbucks in L.A.

Yeah, It’s gonna be hilarious. Do they have to ruin everything in La La Land?

Color me skeptical. No sane person would attempt modernize or redo, Alfrad Hitchhcock. Why, because you can’t improve the work of the Masters The Stooger were the undiputed masters of physical comedy. These no why three Hollywood smucks can master a few weeks, of movie schedule, what the Howard Brothrs and Larry Fine perfected over years.

Big mistake. For one, updating the Stooges is just plain nonsense. Hollywood has already proven many, many times that they are largely incapable of replicating prior successes and making them good (just look the remakes of “Halloween”, “The Omen”, “Psycho”). There is also an air of arrogance here, like people are saying, “We can do it even better than they did.” (Though to be fair, I may just be letting my anti-Hollywood bias get to me in that regard.)

Second, why pay to see this movie when the original Stooges are widely available already, especially on the far-cheaper-than-a-movie-ticket television? A local channel airs the Stooges every Sunday, and while I’m not sure if they still do, Spike has aired them in the past.

Third, the casting is ridiculous. Carrey is the only one with any real comedic experience, but he largely lost his mojo years ago. He could get it back, but it seems like he doesn’t even care anymore. I know next to nothing about Del Toro, so I wanna be fair and not complain about him too much, but he just doesn’t seem like Moe to me. And Penn? Sheesh, say what you will about Larry, but he was definitely a likable and talented guy – two traits that Penn seems to have never possessed in his entire life. Couldn’t they find a better cast? How about the actors that played the Stooges in ABC’s excellent bio-pic from some years back? A talented bunch, and they actually looked like them (more or less).

Chalk up another potential Hollywood blunder. I, of course, hope it doesn’t suck, but experience has unfortunately said otherwise in Hollywood-related matters.

Just saying the name Penn, makes me feel stupid.
I would have to avoid the movie or I would become a blathering idiot.
    Shower time.

Another movie that will lose money!

Hollywood doesn’t get it! You can take a communist actor offstage, put a clown suit on him; but he’s still just a communist clown onstage.

There’s nothing funny about a communist clown! (ò¿ó)

Two commie lovers and comedian who doesn’t want to be a comedian anymore?
Do they not understand that COMMUNIST stooges are not the answer?

    F*** hollywood.
