The National Endowment for the arts is just overpriced welfare. Government perverts art and big government perverts it beyond recognition: that's why PBS and 'public' television have a fishy, artificial feel to them.

I have turned against government funding for art because it is unnecessary. The older I grow the more I see that doing art is basic to being human. People will make art, they will buy and sell art because, in one form or another, humans love art and it will always be with us.
Basic to art is the relationship between the artist and his audience. Government funding perverts that relationship: it often creates a sick situation where the audience consists of merely a bureaucrat or two or even merely a grant application. Government perverts art.
