Illegal Immigration Today: Remittance and The Fence

Good news all around

For the first time in more than a decade, the amount of money sent back to Mexico from migrants living in the U.S. has dropped.

Remittances are Mexico’s second largest source of foreign income after oil. They fell off by more than 3.5% in 2008 to $25 billion.

Still too much, but, it’s a start

The fence along the U.S.-Mexico border is mostly finished.

Customs and Border Protection spokesman Lloyd Easterling says that 601 miles of the project had been completed as of a week ago.

Easterling says 69 miles of the fence still must be built to meet the goal set during the Bush administration.

In December, then President-elect Barack Obama said he wanted to evaluate border security operations before he considers whether to finish building the fence under his administration.

Easterling said the Obama White House has not told Homeland Security to stop building the fence.

OK, that part about Obama is not so good, but, hopefully he will forget about what is going on down there. It should be easy for him to forget it, considering he has no experience running anything, and he is too busy working to free Guantanamo detainees, give free abortions around the world, and cozy up to Iran.

    Hi,

I’m doing a report on immigration from the 1800’s to today. Why is it you say that you want the government to stop building the fence, or is it the other way around you don’t want them to stop?

Second, do we pay Mexico that money and if we do, why?

    Thanks,
    KC

Ps: No, I do not like Barack Obama!
