Rev. Joseph E. Lowery’s Race Baiting Benediction
Posted on January 20, 2009
Welcome to the new post-racial era! Up yours whitey…amen?
Well, at least it brought a smile to Obama’s face.
The funny is at Ace’s!
The Anchoress has a roundup of reactions.
Michelle Malkin too.

As a white person in an Obama world I am still waiting for the day that I will be judged by the content of my character rather than by the color of my skin.
What a RACIST PIG this “Reverend” Joe Lowery is!
This “prayer” ruined my whole day. I am at home this week – without pay from my job – so that my two black, younger junior staff have a job in the next months. We are all college grads, engineers, working for a large company. I was sickened by the stuck in the 60’s love fest that was going on… Lowery – let it go! Many of us already have! But when “minorities” stab white people over and over – it takes away our hope for change. Too bad those who need to hear this won’t read this.
real califonia woman,
get racially aware and active. Obama is making millions of us. we are remembering our racial pride now, and they will shake with fear, just as they did when our ships landed on their shores when they had not invented the wheel. Know the truth, teach the truth. Obama will make 100 million White Nationalists. His blacks cannot defeat our numbers. They are 12%. Avoid anti-Semites, but teach, teach, teach. Make young Whites aware of what their race invented. Give to White causes, join White groups. Shun blacks and African charities. Let them fall. The time is coming for a reckoning. We have never lost, they have never won. Let’s keep it that way.
There has been some really big offices/positions held by African-Americans for the past many decades. Where have you been, Mr.Lowery? (I guess the same question goes for the media.)
Governors, mayors, senators, representatives, Supreme Court Justices, Cabinet secretaries, and now the Presidency. Somehow these people were able to rise above racism — whether it be directed against them, or they racism they might feel within themselves. I suggest that these firebrand “reverends” rise above it too. They would serve their own communities better.
P.S. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. Ever notice that these other modern-day “reverends” tend to be left-wing fringe Democrats?
The good Reverend’s prayer suffers from the same thing – insensitivity due to self-position – that I get warned about every year as I undergo my annual EO immersion therapy.
However, I do not subscribe to the prescription offered by the Elector of Saxony, either.
As I taught my children, so now will I teach my grandchildren – to understand their history through the lens of being an American, and not through the lens of being “white.”
To accept no hyphens, real or implied.
Martin Luther Kings dream was not that one day White and blacks will stand together in harmony and we can insult them over and over again via our Reverends. Whites are always accused of being the prejudice race. It is becoming crystal clear since Obama has been elected the white majority wanted him. But the black prejudice is really becoming more visible. Especially when you look at Oprah (most prejudice)who said white people work for her. Nice. Rev Wright and now Reverend Lowery.
I think that this man has suffered a lot through his career as a civil rights leader. This opportunity is one that is few and far between for him. I think most of the posts above me are severely misguided attempts to appear as the victim of the speech. But facts are that when he fought for civil rights then the White didn’t embrace the right. I mean I am a white man and simply have respect for his speech and apreciate his little rhyme. Its not a stab at whites, its simply a thought he held years ago. And by some of these comments it seems his wishes haven’t yet been achieved. I mean how else could he have rhymed it anyway? White see the light? Fight? Sight? Its just an end to a good solid inclusive prayer speech. And he isn’t being racist by saying it.
A comment to Maryland Man’s rhyme question. Rev. Lowery could have said “White is alright”. Rev. Lowery should have chosen his words better. I understand the spirit of his words. It’s never good when a man of God, black or white, makes comments of a negative nature towards any race. I hope this is a true time of change. We do have race problems in this country. I think it comes from a lack of education, we’ve also become too politically correct.
People please the line that he used comes from a girls game of hand slapping, patti cake type game. Later it was a chant that the kids used to say in the school yard.
I know most of you never heard it before because your parents never heard it, because they aren’t black.
It wasn’t a negative thing if anything it exposed black people as being last.
Do PEOPLE LISTEN? HE WAS HARDLY NEGATIVE. HARDLY RACE BAITING. WHY IS TRUTH SO HARD TO HANDLE?
I feel that in today’s society we should see past the color barriers. The people in this country have obiously accepted and embraced President Obama regardless of the color of his skin. My question is: Why can’t the battle of colors stay in the crayon box? This society is beyond looking at one’s skin color and judging them. We now leave judgement to God. Why can’t Rev. Lowery?
Found this on Wikipedia:
Playing the race card is an idiomatic phrase that refers to the act of bringing the issue of race or racism into a debate, perhaps to obfuscate the matter. It is a metaphorical reference to card games in which a trump card may be used to gain an advantage.
So, I feel that there was no need to bring up race in the prayer but, if he felt that srongly that he needed to, then he could have done it without throwing the race card.
God looks at us as his children not his crayons.
I can’t believe that Nobama actually permitted that racist reverend to speak! I am rarely, rarely offended by blacks’ hostility and negativity, but this old man really offended me. We just elected a 1/2 black man as our Pres., and then we have to be lectured that we don’t know what’s right. I’m beginning to realize that electing Nobama WASN’T right!! Maybe that’s what Lowery meant???
By the way, no more crying “Discrimination” by blacks. Now, whites can cry it!! WOOHOO! There IS hope for my young white sons in America, after all! Hopefully, they’ll get a job they deserve, and not be turned down by an inexperienced, uneducated, “I’ve been oppressed” black person. You got your black Pres, so no more affirmative action. Your man is the top dog now, so no more whining. Blacks are the racists, and this election proves it!
When one applies logic to a close examination of the words “embrace right,” it is evident that those words are not the same in meaning as “do right” or “finally, for once, do right.”
Consider the statement, “High school girls should dress modestly.” Why in the world would those who know they already DO dress modestly take umbrage with this sentiment? How about “Students need to do their own work”? Are you, as a student, going to think that statement infers that no student does their own work…that all students are cheaters?
It’s a concept we have to explain to teenagers all the time: If such-and-such generalization doesn’t apply to you, don’t get all up in arms and take it personally, lest you make cause the rest of us to pause and muse “she protests too much, me thinks.”
Since no group of individuals, (high school girls, whites, blacks, jews) is made up of people who are identical in experience, motivation, education, accomplishment, background, or value system, it is illogical to interpret any general statement about a group to be inherently inclusive; unless of course the speaker says “All you students need to start doing your own work,” or “All whites better start doing right.”
What’s with the dangerous combination of hair-trigger sensitivity and myopic interpretation of text?
Also, what’s wrong, especially as God-fearing people, with being reminded once in a while that we should chose and embrace what is right? Who among us can claim to be so God-like that we always remember to emrace and emulate the compassionate qualities of our maker?
To be a logic-based critic whose arguement can hold water, you must consider that phrase you find offensive within its context and relation to the other phrases it accompanies.
Are ALL blacks still told to “get back”? NO. Are ALL browns still having a problem feeling welcome to “stay around”? NO. Are all Asians hyperactive and need to chill? NO. Is there no “red man” who has yet to “get ahead man”? NO.
Therefore, why oh why would you chose to interprete a call for whites to “embrace right” as an implication or inditment that, heretofore, NO whites have?
Perhaps I’m focusing too much on semantics, but careful reading and consistent, accurate interpretations of words is important. It is difficult if not impossible to do this successfully without considering their context.
For example: When the people who want to “Stop the American Civil Liberties Union” endorse “Beating them with their own sickle and hammer,” am I to assume they/you are advocating physical violence? Is this a cloaked reference in support of past beatings and torturings of people who sought their civil liberties?
If you are going to assume to know the meaning behind someone’s words, make sure you consider them in their context. Especially if you want your outrage, upset and offense at these words to be taken seriously by anyone other than someone of your similar ilk, who is looking for a new reason to be offended.
Or maybe it’s just easier (and more fun?) to get angry and indignant.
Never mind what he said about whites… Just try to imagine what would happen if a white man stood up in front of a crowd and called Asians “Yellow” or Native Americans “Red Man” in ANY context…
He’d be crucified, and you all know it.
Why do we give a pass to a black man who does the same?
Post-racial? I think not.
Dr Lowery probably spoke the words that was put in his heart by God himself. Anyone who wants to challenge it, I suggest go back through time and read your American history. It’s time we face our past, present and future. The future favors those who acknowledges the past. And this was the moment our country has been waiting since it’s long overdue and deliberate delay.
About the last paragraph, take a chill pill people. What’s to be offended? I am brown and I’m proud of it and accept the color God has bestowed upon my skin. If I’m not mistaken there’s even a children christian song that talks about the different colors of the world…….Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
All are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the children of the world…..
Wasn’t that song wrote by a white man? C. Herbert Woolston (1856-1927) Music: George F. Root (1820-1895)
If you have a problem with the color of your skin, take it up with God.
I say Amen! say Amen!! sayyyy Amennnnn!!!!
I will tell you why a white man can never say what a black man or any other color could say in public? because the white man bears more sins on his shoulder than any other race on this planet. Read your history.
Elector of Saxony, your idiotic response is based in the same kind of hate as the rev’s prayer. It does nothing positive for anyone.
The double-standard is unreal in this ridiculous society today. I have NO SINS, as far as blacks are concerned, so why should I have to “bear the sins of early Americans”? If that’s true, then ALL blacks should bear the sins of THEIR forefathers who SOLD THEM INTO SLAVERY!!Whites took advantage of an economic system that was provided to them. They were smart! Just like Nobama is going to spread the weatlth. Think about that one! If Pres.McCain had a white preacher speak at his inauguration, and said, “Blacks, get over it! Slavery is done. Move forward.” That would be from his heart, as well, but he’d be flogged for that! (Yea, the truth hurts).Unfortunately, you blacks elected a man who will hold you to a HIGHER standard! The freebies he promised aren’t gonna’ happen, so don’t hold your breath. You need to look to Bill Cosby and Dr. Ben Carson as role models, not Jazzy-Jazz or Jay-Z. Listen to REAL black role models. They would never approve what Racist Lowery said.
Finally we may get a system that actually holds blacks accountable for their actions. Nobama preaches “service”. . . that means get off your fat, lazy a$$e$ and work for something. Teach your children the positive values of America, not that the white man oppressed us 300 years ago. Remember, the white man freed you, and is now Nobama’s number 1 role model (Yeah, that’s right it’s the Whitey President Lincoln.) Once you remove that 300 year old chip from your shoulder, you will begin to move forward to success and happiness. Look at Dr. Ben Carson. Wow! He is a true hero who overcame a lot in his life and is now the #1 heart surgeon in the world!(If you don’t know it, he’s black) He’s a hero to all whites because we judge by your actions, not your skin color. Why did all blacks vote for Nobama. .. oh, because of his skin color. Sounds like a double standard to me?!?
It is great that the US elected a Negro president ( I am Negro too), but it wasn’t 50% of white America that did it. If I remember correctly he got 48% of the total vote and a good portion of that was the Negro vote. Over 40% voted for McCain and Palin, lest not forget that. America is not post racial as of this day. The KKK, neo natzi’s and skin heads have aleady begun recruiting.
GET OVER IT!!! Be Americans, NOT Afro-Americans, or whatever the politically-correct term of the day is now. The fact is that 98% of blacks voted for Nobama BECAUSE HE CLAIMS TO BE BLACK. That’s the ONLY reason! That is RACISM, my friends! Why do you not realize that? YOUR PEOPLE sold the blacks INTO slavery. Your chip should be with the African forefathers who are STILL selling slaves!!! You are the most uneducated, blind group of idiots if you voted for Nobama because he’s “black” (Actually, the census calls him white. His mother is WHITE!!! and probably so ashamed of him right now in her grave for selling out to the blacks) Keep in mind that the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of the world are only holding you back from success. Playing the victim only goes so far. My ancestors came to America AFTER slavery had ended, so why am I grouped into the “evil white empire”? You, my friends, are the racists, and it will come back to haunt you.
Hey NBW~ It’s obvious that you are still playing the poor victim, and probably teaching your children to keep the evil white chip on their shoulders. Anger and resentment only begets more sadness. The successful black Americans are the ones who put education and determination ahead of anything else. Everyone has stumbling blocks on their way to success, but most people can get up and continue. . . then, there are people like you who feel that it is owed to them because the U.S. used an economic system over 250 years ago, which created the great America that we have today. Thank you to YOUR African ancestors who sold their own people to the white Europeans. And Nobama was raised as a white boy in an elite, upper-class neighborhood, so don’t think he’s a “rags to riches” story because he sure isn’t. He’s just another corrupt, racist, lying, conniving Chicago machine politician who puts HIMSELF first! Palin was our only hope. . . go PALIN in 2012!!! Nobama will be long gone by then once his corrupt tactics are finally exposed. By the way, blacks make up 13% of our population, so at least 40% of whites voted for him. Gosh, are they racists, too? And there are educated blacks who really understood the issues, and voted for McCain (Michael Steele comes to mind). When will the blacks finally understand that the Dumbocraps are keeping them down to further their own power???
Wow. What a way to blow this out of proportion. My fellow white people, this is some cry-baby [edited].
Oh and “Susan on January 22nd, 2009 11:00 pm”…Palin was our only hope? Ahahahahahaha!
Come on..”Dumbocraps”..”Nobama”..and you’re preaching about education? Thanks for the silly name-calling and that “history lesson.” Everyone already knows that Africans sold other Africans to Americans, but…your ancestors still bought them. It’s pathetic to try to act like whites aren’t guilty for slavery. The African slave-traders and the white buyers are both guilty. If you can’t handle the fact that your ancestors enslaved, raped and brutalized a group of people based on the color of their skin, then go get some therapy to handle the guilt. Don’t try to [edited your way out of it.
Hey Richie~ Spoken like a true “white” man~ yea, right!! Let’s see: My ancestors lived in Italy and Germany until the 1920s, and according to the history that I’ve read, slavery was long over by then. My immigrant (legally) ancestors worked hard to get where they got in life. They expected no hand-outs. Slavery was a way of life, and you better read more, Richie, because it STILL exists! Why don’t you bleeding-heart Dumbocraps head to other countries and solve their slavery issues, instead of creating that “I’ve been oppressed” atmosphere here. And, yes, if you vote Democratic only to vote Democratic, then you ARE DUMB-0-CRAPS! Not worthy of wiping my shoes. I vote for the best person, which was McCain/Palin in the previous election; when you only vote for a party, you’re gonna’ get burned! Sorry you feel so guilty for your ancestors, but mine were hard-working legal immigrants who had NOTHING to do with slavery (which was a great economic system at the time).
So, I suggest that YOU read some history books, as well. Slavery exists in many countries, and still exists in the homeland of Africa. Go there and fight for them; they’re the ones who need you. The blacks here are fine (better off than all of the other cultures, including whites, here).
By the way, I’m a teacher, and trying very hard to make sure my college students hear BOTH sides of the political spectrum; not just the Liberal, assanine lectures by the typical, uneducated teachers of today. It’s war, and perhaps Civil War will solve our ailments. If blacks can’t blend into American culture, with all the freebies and handouts they already receive, then they need to get out or stop bitching.
I have plenty of books I could recommend to you, Richie-Rich, if you’d like a REAL education. You seem to have the brainwashed, cult education of the Nobama Followers. Praise the lord!!!
Finally, the racist blacks who elected Nobama because of his skin color were so fooled and duped!! hahahahaha~cracks me up. Secret’s out: Nobama is WHITE!!! His mother was white, his white grandmother and grandfather (rich whites) raised him. He is white, so get off your high-horse. Like all corrupt, Dumbocrapic politicians, he doesn’t give a darn about any of you. You got him in, now go screw off!! You’ll all be calling him Uncle Tom in a few months. Wait and see. By the way, why are all the corrupt, immoral, and law-breaking politicians Democrats??? Hmmmm. . . something to think about. . .
Doesn’t this President remind you all of an old story with a character called the Pied Piper? This man has the ability to tell most that their name is not thier name, and they’ll believe it’s so.
stop crying and face the truth. obama is blk and you hate it.whites have been soooo rude to every race in this world. even at my job i told the h.r. dept about a racist in my dept calling me awful blk names they said i was lying on him and told me i was too sensitive. job name (AWT) in the state of minnesota deal with the truth. the chickens have come home to roost. you shall reap what you have sown. God bless America ye boi.smile you will be alright.
Most of the comments are crazy. What are you people so afraid of? Most of the things I read was of fear. No man has nothing to fear. We are all people (human beings) with different skin color. As the song goes “Red, Yellow, Black, and White; we are precious in his sights”
To my fellow black man do not fear having to rely on yourselves for change. You can make a positive difference in society, start to learn and embrace your power. You do not need Obama or anybody else to help you get what you want out of life.
To my fellow white man do not fear the black man. They come from compassion. They will not harm you and will welcome you with open arm into their homes. That is why slavery was such a success. But guess what, most black people are not trying to get revenge.
To Susan, baby where do you teach. I hope you are feeding that cramp you wrote to our kids (our future). Even though your ancestor came to America after slavery. The impact it has on America society stills impact everyone associated with America even you.
To my fellow human beings. It is time for a change and it starts with oneself. We must all understand the impact Slavery had and continue to have on all Americans. As of today, I do not know what is needed to heal from its bruises. But hopefully in due time, we ALL will begin to HEAL. See you all at the 29th Poor People’s Day @ The Georgia State Capitol or how about you can make a donation at projectsouth.org it you can not attend.
By way I Loved Rev Lowery comments.
To Pumpkin: Yes, I am encouraging my students to see ALL sides of each and every issue. NOT just the side that is “politically correct”. Therefore, having won Teacher of the Year in my state twice, I must be doing something right.
As far as slavery is concerned, the media and the awful black “role models” (Jackson, Sharpton, Lowery, etc.) have perpetuated the blacks’ feeling of inferiority. No one else but themselves can “help them to feel better”. No one alive today suffered through slavery, so it’s a non-issue. Don’t you preach forgiveness and strength? Well, your “role models” do not, unfortunately which is why the blacks feel they are owed something. They are owed NOTHING! Work for what you’ve got. Why don’t the Jews hate all whites/Germans and expect reparations for the Holocaust? The answer is that they went beyond the horror to better themselves, and are now reaping the benefits of their hard work. They expect nothing for the horrors, as should the blacks. It happened, lasted a few years, and was ended by a wonderful white President (whom Obama now models himself after). If the media and black “leaders” would stop making money by oppressing blacks, then there would not be an issue, and blacks would be considered “Americans”. They label themselves, so I don’t feel sorry for any of them.
So, take your racist a$$ and turn your lectures into good, positive messages to blacks, like Michael Steele and Bill Cosby (and even Obama) are trying to do.
What has become of our Nation? I created a hubpage all about this issue. After two days of being listed in google search they totally removed my hubpage from their search engine. I suppose the old Rev. makes google more money than I do.
well, now with a black pres I hope men like the rev lowery will be accountable for there own actions. Or will it still be the white mans fault?
