They probably do fine for local driving and from there can expand as there numbers increase. The question is cost. And what fuel is being used to supply the energy for the batteries? It has to come from someplace. Umm... coal perhaps? Correct me if I'm wrong. Seems to make about as much sence as fuel from corn. Use fuel to run the machines to plant and harvest the corn, then use more fuel to process the corn. Like my Grandfather used to say: it's like shoveling sh** against the tide...
