All their heroes are wussies! aparently that’s all they got on their mind. Addendum: There’s a *little* bit of hyperbole in the “benevolent paragon” bit, but you get the subtext: We weren’t as bad as the Russians, the Germans, the British, the French, the Dutch or pretty much any other world-spanning power that came before us, so set against WWII, the Belgian Congo and the Opium Wars, we’ve been a pretty good global hegemon.

Also, Steve L., you’re a fool if you think Rome’s ways will work in the days of global trade, the Internet and WMD. I’d love to list them, but for politeness’s sake (and that no matter what I say, you’re head’s still in the B.C.E.), let me summarize: Countries that rely on armies must pay heavily to maintain the source of their supremacy. Countries that rely on science and industry gain wealth when they maintain the source of their supremacy. Your way is a long walk off a short pier.

Bush may have messed up our economy, our military, two military adventures in the middle east, and America’s reputation abroad with allies who’s trust we’ve been developing since the First World War. He may be hiding behind the Flag he’s done so much to stain, and behind the blind adoration that many of my fellow citizens still somehow feel for the office of the presidency. He may have torn up the Constitution and ignored the laws that allow us to be a free, open society that the world wishes to emulate, his recklessness destroying our image as a benevolent paragon and thus making us even more vulnerable to outside extremists. He may have done more to reduce American freedom, progress, democracy and safety then any outside threat we’ve faced in the past 15 years.

And despite this, I kinda feel proud of our Still-President Bush when his cat-like reflexes kick in and he dodges a thrown shoe. Well done Bush, you’re the worst President we’ve ever seen, and I’m praying for the day President Elect Obama enters office, but *damn* are you good at dodging your just desserts.

By the way are other Americans as sickened by the Military Recruitment ads as the I am?

They are totally wrong in focus. The military isn’t about “helping people”. The military is about breaking things and killing people. I am not condemning them for that. Indeed they perform an honorable and necessary role in our society. For as it been said over and over again freedom isn’t free. We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.

What makes me so mad about these ads, especially the Navy ones is that they make the military look like one big urban renewal program. Sure there are times when the military can perform an humanitarian role but that should always be the exception and not the standard.

Show the excitement of the military, talk about the honor, the training, the experience, but don’t show them helping people. They aren’t the peace corp and it is because we have too often treated them as such with all these Nation Building adventures that we find ourselves where we are today.
