The Bible According to Newsweek

Not content with imagining the Constitution as a “living document”, now the liberals claim the Bible is a “living document”. Yes, the Bible says whatever you want it to say, and they want it to say gay!

Biblical literalists will disagree, but the Bible is a living document, powerful for more than 2,000 years because its truths speak to us even as we change through history. In that light, Scripture gives us no good reason why gays and lesbians should not be (civilly and religiously) married—and a number of excellent reasons why they should.”

What is funny is this writer is actually thinking people will take her theology seriously. What is scary is that a handful of likeminded fools will.

Church leaders have been treating the Bible as having flexible meanings for a long time. They’ve had to. See, for 1,500 years, when people thought the Earth was a flat disk at the center of the universe, the Bible said just that (and still does) in Isaiah. But when Galileo figured out that this was wrong, and the priests couldn;t deny it, why *POOF*! The meaning of Isaiah changed overnight!

So it ain’t just the libs. And besides, the Bible’s worthless as a source of morality anyway. Rape, genocide, slavery…waste of paper.

Actually, Jay, where DOES it say in the Bible that gays shouldn’t marry or have civil unions? Jesus himself was silent on the subject of homosexuality.

It sounds like she had liberal theology down pat. It also sounds as if she does not believe the bible is the word of God. Both of those are transparent and the article is commentary and not news so I am not sure what the complaint is Newsweek is free to print whatever it wants in its opinions.

Scripture clearly states homosexuality is a sin and God does not endorse sin in any way so Saturnalia’s question is rather silly. Still who said liberals were sensible. I do not even find them to be honest.

Jesus himself was silent on the subject of homosexuality.

That is a common argument that on many levels.

    1. Jesus inspired all scripture, including Levitucus, Romans and other passages that did specifically mention homosexual behavior.

    2. He supported the Old Testament law to the last letter

    3. The “red letters” weren’t silent on these topics in the sense that they reiterated what marriage and murder were

    4. He emphasized many other important issues that these liberal theologians completely ignore (Hell, his divinity, his exclusivity, etc.)

    5. He was equally “silent” on issues that these folks treat as having the utmost importance (capital punishment, war, welfare, universal health care, etc.),

    6. Abortion and homosexual behavior simply weren’t hot topics for 1st century Jews, and He did mention Sodom and Gomorrah.

    7. Arguing from silence is a logical fallacy. Jesus also didn’t speak against child abuse, misogyny, drunk driving, etc., but we can infer that those are wrong from his other teachings.

Just because the Bible is capable of being misunderstood doesn’t mean it is incapable of being understood. The question is what is the right interpretation. It is rather clear on homosexual behavior:

100% of the verses addressing homosexual behavior denounce it as sin in the clearest and strongest possible terms.

100% of the verses referencing God’s ideal for marriage involve one man and one woman.

100% of the verses referencing parenting involve moms and dads with unique roles (or at least a set of male and female parents guiding the children).

0% of 31,173 Bible verses refer to homosexual behavior in a positive or even benign way or even hint at the acceptability of homosexual unions.
