Obama Says: Lawful Gun Owners Have Nothing To Fear
Posted on December 8, 2008
The Messiah Speaks (must type in capitals when speaking about Him)
As gun sales shoot up around the country, President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday that gun-owning Americans do not need to rush out and stock up before he is sworn in next month.
“I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment,” Obama said at a news conference. “Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven’t indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word.”
Oh, really?
But National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said it’s not Obama’s words — but his legislative track record — that has gun-buyers flocking to the stores.
“Prior to his campaign for president, his record as a state legislator and as a U.S. Senator shows he voted for the most stringent forms of gun control, the most Draconian legislation, gun bans, ammunition bans and even an increase in federal excise taxes up to 500 percent for every gun and firearm sold,” Arulanandam said.
Sometimes words really don’t matter.
“Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly has not been paying attention to how quickly we make progress on this issue” said Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence. “We don’t think these are first-time buyers. We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more.”
I’m a first time gun owner, so, I guess that blows that out of the water. 41 years old, and bought me first gun a couple Mondays ago, after going and applying for my handgun permit the Friday after the election. Took longer then 7 days for the background because so many folks do not believe Obama’s words. Nice little Walther P22. Good starter gun, small, and the ammo is really inexpensive, which is why I got a .22. And, if the legislation starts passing (more worried about the Congress then Barry), I will get another permit and get a higher caliber, probably a Walther P99 (.40 S&W).
Lew Rockwell asks if he can haz a machinegun.
Jennifer at Wizbang points out that sales jumped nearly 49% due to fears of what Barry and the Dem Congress may [do]. (BTW, Wizbang is holding a competition for someone to take Jay Tea’s place, so, go leave a comment and good feedback for Jennifer.)
Crossed at a place of swords and guns.

“We have nothing to fear”? Who cares what he says. It’s not his to say. This is a constitutional right, not a privilege subject to the pleasure of his excellency.
For a surprise, here’s an article in the London Times, suggesting that SOME Brits really DO have some common sense…
“Think tank: If each of us carried a gun . . .”
(Oops! Put in the wrong damn link. Here’s the right one.)

“I believe in common-sense gun safety laws” -B. Obama
This particular statement scares me to no end. “Common sense” is a subjective statement, and is used to lull people into a warm fuzzy. Never does he expand on what these “Common sense” laws are. To him it may be “Common sense” to hike up taxes on firearms and ammunition. On the flip side, to me, “Common sense” is to teach fire arm safety to any who may come in contact with them, and to harshly prosecute cases of gun crime.
“Common sense” gives a warm safe feeling, but actually says nothing.
“due to fears of what Barry and the Dem Congress may due.”
Just a reminder: “Due” and “do” are homophones, not homonymns.
By the way, what do you mean by your Walther being a “starter gun”? What would lead you to need a bigger, badder model? Do you plan to wear the Walther out? If so, how? Why not go out and get a Howitzer right now if you think Obama’s going to take away your right to purchase heavy artilery?
Oops…”artillery”
P
Well, what really scares me is the government deciding how many guns are ‘enough’ to protect myself.
Because they know how many police officers are ‘enough’ to protect all the people getting killed or raped.
Saturnalia,
Just a reminder: “Due” and “do” are homophones, not homonymns.

Just a reminder: you don’t “wear the Walther out”, you “wear out the Walther.”
Oh, and it’s “artillery”, not “artilery.” Okay, Webster?
I went out and bought my first shotgun and handgun. All because I fear some “mobbin” and more laws.
So shut the hell up, losers!
THAT ONE also said he was going to change the “good ol’ boy, Washington insiders status quo”, too. How’s that worked out so far?
Keep your friends close. Keep your gun(s) closer!
The Dalai ‘Bama is from the government, right? Isn’t here just here to help?
What do you jackasses need guns for anyway? to shoot the policemen you say you support when they come to take your shootin’ iron? To shoot the soldiers you say you support when they come for your “safety”?
Bunch of simpletons, a Walter PPK protects you from teenagers marauding across your lawn and gang members “asking” for your wallet. it doesn’t protect you from “Congress,” and Congress has never made a PPK illegal.
Further, surmounting Heller, a poorly reasoned, if correct, Supreme Court decision would require perfect legislation or a Constitutional Amendment, neither of which is possible.
Bunch of right wing yutzes, holding onto your gun because of the scary Communist. I swear, how we let you tools run the country into the ground for eight years is a tribute to the power of fear.
P.S. Hey, genius, might want to re-title your half-wit blog, since the ACLU I’m a member of supports the Second Amendment.

I’ve seen you trolling elsewhere. I don’t completely understand your type. But, apparently, the normal enjoyment of surfing the net and blogging just don’t get it for your twisted personality. You get off only on hate and spite filled ad hominem attacks. I bet a decent shrink could help you immensely. Good luck if you ever begin that journey to mental health.
Funny how none of the lefties I have seen commenting here and other sites on this issue have actually defended Obama. They throw out lots of personal attacks, but little else.
snaggie,
How is asking how a PPK is going to protect his rights an ad hominem attack? Or, is that just a word on your calendar for the day and you thought you’d use without understanding it?
You tools (that’s ad hominem) need guns to protect yourself from the scary Commie and his desire to take your gun (that’s not) A PPK isn’t gonna chase away any Blackhawks? Ask David Koresh. If the government wanted your gun, it would take it.

Get help. Get a life.
“apparently, the normal enjoyment of surfing the net and blogging just don’t get it for your twisted personality.”
Yet you think that the ‘normal enjoyment’ of Internet use includes setting up a widget-choked site like this one and stocking it with borderline illiterate right-wing conspiracy theorists who make it their life’s mission to invent and propagate ridiculous lies about the next U.S. president? He won’t even take office for over a month and you hammerheads are practically calling for impeachment already.
Are any of you honest enough to acknowledge that the Bush administration f*cked up your country and probably made you, personally, poorer over the past 8 years? Or are you just gonna pretend the first morning Obama wakes up in the White House that he’s uniquely responsible?
You guys need jobs. That would be a start. Thing is, the Bushies have made those kind of hard to find, now, haven’t they.
Anyone who believes in gun control simply doesn’t understand the issue. The only people who abide the law are-yes that’s right- law-abiding people. The guy you really need to fear will have a gun regardless of the law. Armed criminals love gun control. You first time gun-buyers: yes it’s good to start with a .22LR, in fact I’m not alone in believeing a .22LR is more effective than a .32 or .380 and ammo is cheap/plentiful. If you want a bigger caliber, don’t mess around with a 9mm or .40, go straight for the .45ACP
As for you right-bashing Lefties, I voted against B.O. and I also believe W. will be remembered as the worst president in US history. B.O. may or may not keep his word about the gun issue; I want to believe him, but having already suffered significasntly in the 2A-rights arena here in Cali, I’m very uncomfortable right now. I’m even more uncomfortable about the economy, but that’s getting off-topic. Suffice it to say I’m not a single-issue voter.
One more thing in response to Saturnalia- I think the “starter gun” handle is in reference to the caliber of that P22 model, it’s a .22 which is widely regarded as the ideal caliber for a beginner. It is quite lethal, with precise shot placement, but in a crisis situation it’s better to have a heavier-duty caliber. I repect your right to choose to let others defend you, and I would defend you. I would never criticize you for your choice, I’ve served to protect your freedom. God Bless You. As a free man, an American, a former Marine, I choose to be able to defend myself. When seconds counts, a cop is only minutes away.
Saturnalia,
Nice job in finally using a spell-check before you post. Although writing “gonna” does make you seem like some illiterate, text-messaging teenager.
You get this kind of stuff pointed out to you when you appoint yourself as the spelling martinet (like you did in your first comment).
“…after going and applying for my handgun permit the Friday after the election.”
That should be a sentence never spoken in the United States. This is a RIGHT, as affirmed by the Supreme Court. Permits are for privileges. The state/federal government should have no place to tell you whether or not you can have a gun, unless you are a felon (which, duly convicted by a jury of their peers, has had their rights suspended by due process of law).
Also, the second amendment was not about personal protection. It was to prevent tyrannical control. Please, read the Declaration of Independence! (Yes, I realize it was a document separate of the Constitution and the accompanying Bill of Rights, but it shows intent.)
“…But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
Yes well said Red. I do think the permitting process is needed due to felons and mental cases. But unfortunately it can go wrong- here in San Diego, theres a permitting process, but no one gets approved. I’ve always had a CCP everywhere I’ve lived, until here. Very frustrating.
I really don’t care if you support or are offended by my right to keep and bear arms. I belive that if you are of the mind to come take what is mine your going to get what you’ve got coming. Why not? You’ve earned it at that point!
There are some real hurdles to ban guns in the United States, a lack of votes is the small hurdle. States rights will return to the forefront again in a way that we haven’t seen since the Cival War. So coming for my guns, I doubt.
What does concern me is the stupidity of belief that pistol grips, flash hiders or magazine limited to 10 rounds will somehow make a difference.
Until we start making a difference in the lives of those that have no value for life there will continue to be death at the hands of a criminal.
As posted above “When seconds counts, a cop is only minutes away”.
Think about it, you are your best defense. Avoiding the areas prone to crime is but a symptom of the greater problem.
We need to end the war on drugs and start putting criminals in prison and onto the express lane of death row.
