Propostion 8 the Musical
Posted on December 3, 2008
I used to think Jack Black was funny, but now that I see him ridicule and mock my Christian faith…hmmm..not so much. I feel insulted and offended.
Jesus appears and says, “Well, the bible says a lot of things…” and equates homosexuality with a shrimp cocktail, and plays the Leviticus card. We’re not stoning people or selling them into slavery anymore, so that invalidates the whole bible and our faith. These folks have no comprehension of the old covenant and the new covenant, what the purpose of Jesus’ incarnation and death was and how it changed the entire equation… none of it. And that’s our fault. Just as heterosexuals generally and Christians specifically have abandoned marriage, we have also largely abandoned our faith. If people don’t know the basic tenets of Christianity, that’s entirely our fault. It’s one thing for people to reject Christianity, but at least let them reject the real thing – not some wacky construct based on the behavior of cultural Christians.
So… It would seem that Jack’s version of Jesus is stuck in the Old Testament and completely ignorant of how Jesus would not flippantly disregard the Old Testament law but fulfilled the Law by paying the price for sin Himself.
But my guess is that no one on that stage was really very concerned about portraying Jesus accurately. This is a perfect example of how different the gay culture war is compared to the true civil rights movements of the past. Martin Luther King would have never condoned this type of protest or characterization of an “opponent.”
There’s gotta be someone out there up for making the other Prop. 8 musical — the one with angry activists storming restaurants and Mormon temples, hectoring elderly people over their signs, and hounding donors large and small until they pay off their tormentors in the name of tolerance. Anyone?

The shrimp / shellfish argument is full of holes but is appealing to many because so few bother to read the passages in context. I address 5 major problems with it in flaws of the shellfish argument.
Who are the people who ever thought Jack Black was funny??? That “band” he had was plain awful and I had to sit through a CD of it on a road trip. I did not laugh once. The guy is trying to ride the “wacky fat guy” wave started by guys like Belushi and Farley but he plain SUCKS.
Thanks for the linkage and quote. The whole thing is astounding to me and I know it shouldn’t be but it is. So much of Hollywood just has absolutely zero respect for anyone beyond their circles that don’t comply with their groupthink.
For once I actually agree with you guys- this is preposterous. .
I’ve added a your post and a quote on to H8te Watch – discerning tolerance vs intolerance
You should check out the movie “For the Bible Tells Me So” to see how real families deal with this issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajBR0dq0XXk
The “For the Bible Tells Me So” movie had a rather deceptive title. They don’t really want to know what the Bible says – http://4simpsons.wordpress.com/2008/07/17/for-the-bible-tells-me-so/
Did you notice in the video how they used the lady to simulate sodomy from behind? It was obviously a conscious choice. It was weird — almost as if using a guy would have been a little too close to reality? Kinda homophobic on their part, don’t you think?
And of course they lied through their teeth and implied that the “normality” of homosexuality wouldn’t be taught to kids. That happened within months of the judges decision that prompted Prop 8.
You are really just terrible people…I haven’t harassed anyone. I haven’t attacked the Christians. All i want is the right to protect my boyfriend under the law to the same extent that straight people protect their husbands and wives. If you don’t want to call it marriage, then don’t. It’s not your approval I want, it’s the governments. Why is that so much to ask? Don’t any of you realize that none of this would have happened in the first place if you hadn’t revoked gay marriage in california?
Seriously…why do you hate us so much? Why do you hate those that are so different from you? I’ll seriously never frequent this website again, so I’m not looking for answers…it just kills me. I’m not a bad guy. I go to work. I pay my taxes. I take care of my grandmother and I love my family and friends…I just happen to also love another guy instead of a woman…why does that matter to you?
You wonder why so many gay teenagers kill themselves…they live in a world where they hear stuff like this all the time. It’s hard living life being told you’re evil and a 2nd class citizen. I bet most of you have no idea what that is like though. I don’t say that to be spiteful, but in seriousness. I don’t any of you have ever known the extent of shame and isolation that comes with being gay. It is not a choice. No one would wish this on themselves, and endure what we’ve endured.
I don’t want kids to learn about gays in school, I think that’s a parent’s responsibility. I don’t want christian churches forced to conduct a ceremony for me and my boyfriend within their walls. I believe in the separation of church and state, and that goes both ways. If a priest doesn’t want to conduct my ceremony, it should be his choice.
All I want, all I’ve ever wanted out of this, is to be seen as an equal in the eyes of my government.
Why are you all so opposed to that?
The passages in the Old and New Testaments regarding homosexuality are minimal compared with the recurring, pervasive, and excellent themes of caring for the sick, the poor, the elderly, and the marginalized.
I am shocked that some Christians are perverting the central message of their own theology by encoding discrimination into a civil constitution. You are ignorant of your own theology.
Christ was deeply concerned with the disenfranchised, ridiculed, despised, and marginalized of his society. It was his central message.
Shame on you all for spending your time, money, and energy on a distraction like same sex marriage.
Religion solemnizes a marriage rite. The government accords benefits and protections. These are very separate things.
You cannot get married in a church alone and expect the government to legitimate your heirs or recognize your spouse for social security benefits, hospital visitation rights, or guardianship of your children — to have SOCIETY recognize you, you must register your union with the state. That is all same-sex marriage is about… the right to so register and be recognized.
Shame on you.
