I'm an atheist, and this sign is childish and counter-productive. There's nothing wrong with "Happy Winter Solstice", but why not follow it up with something positive and celebratory instead of a Scroogish petty attack? I wouldn't be surprised if Focus on the Family paid for the sign so that they could ride the wave of negative publicity.

Religion is often hateful and stupid, but this shows that atheists can be just as bad.

Quote from above: "Exactly! I’m sure most Americans agree that the real reason for the season is to celebrate the shortest day of the year! I know that is why my parents and family exchange gifts and read from the nativity story every year."

---------------------------------
Christmas originated from the Pagan holiday "Yule" which is celebrated on December 21st (Winter Solstice). That is where such customs of giving gifts and decorating a tree come from.

I commented on this point elsewhere but I will point out that a statement of faith is not the same as a holiday symbol. An apropriate Atheist symbol of the holiday would be a sun moon representation of the Winter Solstice. A manger would do as well since they can merely say Jesus is a philosopher whose birth they choose to celebrate because they like to give.

Sorta. I think the lawsuits were about banning state support of one religion over others or of religion over nonreligion...
