Anti-Christian Atheists Exercise Free Speech

Update: This is in Washington State.

As we have noted before, atheism (or more accurately anti-theism) is a religion of its own. After numerous attacks on Christian displays during the National Holiday celebrating the birth of Christ, and numerous lawsuits attempting to ban that expression….I guess some are embracing the motto “if you can’t beat em’, join em.

An atheistic sign is included in the state Capitol’s holiday display that includes a holiday tree and a Christian nativity scene.

The sign, a new addition this year, is sponsored by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The sign reads, “Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

Annie Laurie Gaylor, foundation co-president, said in a prepared statement that the sign is a reminder of the “real reason for the season, the winter solstice.” The solstice, on Dec. 21 this year, is the shortest day of the year.

Exactly! I’m sure most Americans agree that the real reason for the season is to celebrate the shortest day of the year! I know that is why my parents and family exchange gifts and read from the nativity story every year. Perhaps the Freedom from Religion Foundation thought they would evoke controversy from this and cries from the Christian majority so they could turn around and call them hypocrites. Not going to happen. Most Christians actually support free speech, unlike the Freedom from Religion Foundation. I especially encourage speech from self righteous, condescending anti-theists that further hurt their cause.

Ace:

I can think of few ways the group could have found to participate that would hurt their cause more than that particular sign. “Christianists are teh stupid” was probably too overtly offensive, so they settled for this. Talk about classless.

How insecure can you get?

The foundation’s co-president, Dan Barker, said it was important for atheists to offer their viewpoint alongside the overtly religious Nativity scene and Christmas-style holiday tree.

“Our members want equal time,” Barker said. “Not to muscle, not to coerce, but just to have a place at the table.”

Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiller on the atheist “equal time”:

And you got it. Just like Uncle Cletus, the embarrassing family member who spent all of his formative years fornicating with pigs and eating lead-based paint chips that you just have to invite because… well, blood is thicker than water. Then, as he has taken his place at the table, he immediately proceeds to flick boogers at everybody, grope around the cleavage of the lady sitting next to him for his dentures and farting until the air turns green around him.

It would be interesting to know in which state capitol this sign is displayed.

It would be interesting and informative if the article gave a clue as to which state capitol has this sign displayed.

“…numerous lawsuits attempting to ban that expression…”

Sorta. I think the lawsuits were about banning state support of one religion over others or of religion over nonreligion…

Atheism is a religion like bald is a hair color.

I commented on this point elsewhere but I will point out that a statement of faith is not the same as a holiday symbol. An apropriate Atheist symbol of the holiday would be a sun moon representation of the Winter Solstice. A manger would do as well since they can merely say Jesus is a philosopher whose birth they choose to celebrate because they like to give.

Quote from above: “Exactly! I’m sure most Americans agree that the real reason for the season is to celebrate the shortest day of the year! I know that is why my parents and family exchange gifts and read from the nativity story every year.”

    ———————————
Christmas originated from the Pagan holiday “Yule” which is celebrated on December 21st (Winter Solstice). That is where such customs of giving gifts and decorating a tree come from.

Oh, BTW, the sign is in the Washington State capitol for those interested.

I’m an atheist, and this sign is childish and counter-productive. There’s nothing wrong with “Happy Winter Solstice”, but why not follow it up with something positive and celebratory instead of a Scroogish petty attack? I wouldn’t be surprised if Focus on the Family paid for the sign so that they could ride the wave of negative publicity.

Religion is often hateful and stupid, but this shows that atheists can be just as bad.

President Thomas Jefferson – “The Christian god can easily be pictured as virtually the same god as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites.”
