Piter: Yes, I mentioned that Rezko is of Syrian descent - in fact lived there for 18 years, and grew up as a Catholic. His contacts and friends are not Jewish.

The money McCain "provided" was monies to set up a democratic election in Palestine and it was not direct to Khalidi.

Joe noted what Shep Smith knew and wanted to deflect from: Obama's actions and associations are undesirable.

Maggie: Follow up...

"well, for one thing, Japan has announced that they are planning on increased nuclear activity."

One of my biggest worries about Obama is that his rhetoric on Iraq, and rumored comments about Israel reveal a willingness to sell out allies when convenient.

If countries under threat (Taiwan, maybe South Korea, even Japan) feel reason to believe that our word is no longer any good, that it's just noise, they'll almost certainly feel the need for self-sufficiency in nuclear arms as the only real deterrent to someone like China.

Others, in the middle east will want them to deter Iran. How about Saudi Arabia and Egypt? Maybe Libya decides that abandoning their efforts was a mistake.

It could just go on and on.

THAT, I feel, would be the likely result of us deciding to just dis-involve ourselves with these countries.

We've tried successfully, and for a long time, to convince others that they did not need them, because WE would provide the nuclear umbrella.

When they become certain that we CANNOT be relied on, the whole thing unravels, and we may have to live with result.

Maggie:

The guy had asked "Why is it America’s job to make sure they are safe?"

I felt that the answer is that we didn't want the entire world as a nuclear-armed camp, on the thought that the more countries there are with these things, the greater likelihood that some will eventually be used.

Our alliances with these countries, to protect them, was not out of altruism, but for what we saw as our best interests.

It seemed he was advocating "To hell with them, let them take care of themselves!"

Well, we live on the same planet as they do. If he got his wish, he might not like the results.

@ Regular Ron: the US is a strong supporter of Israel because it is a modern, West-friendly and progressive democracy in the Middle East (such a combination is a decided rarity in that region), and fostering and maintaining a peaceful and prosperous relationship with them is of immeasurable strategic advantage to us.

That's the practical answer. The romantic answer is that in Israel, we see that independent American spirit to fight for freedom and liberty and feel that we owe it to them...as America must owe it to all who crave to feast at the table of freedom...to assist in any way we can.

This blog post = much ado about nothing. I will be brief, and just hit the high notes here.

Smith's reaction after Joe the Plumber's very insightful parsing of foreign policy with regards to an Obama administration has less to do about Smith quashing Joe the Plumber's freedom of speech than it does with trying to remind the viewers that Joe the Plumber is not a foreign policy expert, or even a hobbyist, apparently.

Khalidi: you apparently are a very selective diet of news, as it has now been widely reported that John McCain, when he chaired the Republican National Institute, provided Khalidi with nearly $450,000 in grant money.

Rezko: I like how you make sure to point to the Syrian part of his heritage....I haven't seen that done previously. So a prominent politician knows a prominent businessman in the same city you say?? And said businessman held a fundraiser for the politician?? My god, why hasn't this been reported?!?

"Unconditional" talks with terrorist states: this is untrue, but you already know that.

Paul in Houston - well, for one thing, Japan has announced that they are planning on increased nuclear activity.

I'm not sure Israel can completely wipe out the ME. Maybe they can, but Israel has never demonstrated that they want to eliminate their neighbors. Israel does just enough to stay alive.

I also do not think we want to be the Final Solution. I'm not sure what you mean by "be careful what I wish for."

No Miguel, you won't help me do anything. Joe said he based his opinions on Obama's actions and associations. That makes sense, because there is plenty known about those actions and associations.

Bob, no the Pastor of my house of worship does not speak for me. The point is most of us would not be in a house of worship that we believe spouts unacceptable rhetoric. That's the point - we would not give our time and our money to such a church. The Obamas did.
