Within the last hour, the first exit poll of 817 Americans in Israel, who attended U.S. election voting events in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening to vote by absentee ballot, has been released. A startling 76 percent of those polled said that they had voted for John McCain. This contrasts sharply with pre-election polls of American Jews in the U.S., which indicate a strong preference for Obama. The exit poll findings of American voters in Israel are all the more surprising because less than one in four were registered Republicans, and 46% of registered Democrats living in Israel said they had crossed party lines to vote McCain. By contrast, the Republican crossover to Obama was minimal – just 2%. The votes are significant as almost half of the 42,000 registered U.S.voters living in Israel come from key swing states including Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In the 2000 and 2004 elections, Israel had the third-largest group of American voters abroad, after Canada and Britain.
The exit poll was commissioned by Votefromisrael.org, an independent,non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting voter registration and participation amongst American citizens living in Israel.
SARKOZY: OBAMA’S STANCE ON IRAN IS “UTTERLY IMMATURE”
More than half of the respondents listed foreign policy (including Israel and Iran policy) as the most important factor influencing their vote.Separately, in a poll for the country’s largest newspaper, Yediot Ahronot, most Israelis in general (not just Americans living in Israel) said they would prefer McCain because they are concerned about the anti-Israeli positions of many of the people Barack Obama has appointed to advise him on foreign policy, and because – in the words of French President Nicolas Sarkozy as quoted in Tuesday’s Ha’aretz newspaper – Obama’s stance on Iran is “utterly immature” and comprised of “formulations empty of all content.” In most countries, according to opinion polls, if the local populations had a vote in next week’s American elections, they would choose Obama over McCain. Among the exceptions (where McCain would win) are Israel, Iraq, Georgia and the Philippines (all countries that have had to cope with terrorism).

A reader left a very relevant comment on my post about the true nature of this election and the fact that it’s no longer about GOP vs. Dems:

Perhaps there will be enough “whisper voters” who will define the election.
I have been saying this since July.
McCain is going to win this election and it was solidified when he chose Sarah Palin.
Call me crazy but there you have it
THIS IS WAR!
Please pass this along…

I understand you’re trying to keep flagging hopes alive, but jeez, citing an exit poll is Israel?
And how’s that API story coming?
Watch the slime-bags throw these votes out along with the military votes…
A vote for Obama is a vote for the U.S.S.A. (Union of Soviet Socialists in America)
It’s already happened Chris. Just look above you.
And Tracy can see this STACLU article if they are interested in this subject. “Obama campaign tries to bribe African Press International”
I just can’t give up any hope of McCain/Palin winning this election, I want to see and read any bit of encouragement.
I find it so odd that American Jews feel so differant than those in Israel…what’s that all about???
Methinks the pro-Obama media will be eating a big helping of crow on election night.
Diana,
I regards to the different between Jews living in American and those living in Israel, my guess would be that you’d find that those who live in America are far less religious than their Israel-dwelling counterparts. As well as having a more immediate concern with America’s policy toward Israel.
In my County I thought I would vote early went to the only poll location in my County last week and the lines were some 500+ people long (150 yards outside the building) So I walked from the building entrance to the end of the line quietly asking “Obama or McCain?” about 50 times every 10 steps or so.
It was 95% McCain responses.
This presidential election is all about FRAUD.
1.3 Million Illegal Registrations by Obamas hood group ACORN hiring felons and crack heads to fill out these cumbersome forms.
Illegal contributions facilitated by Obamas campaign personnel tweaking their Web site to not enforce “any security” whatsoever for their legitimate donors expediting illegal foreign donations from non-citizens.
Secretaries of State deliberately misinterpreting voter rules regarding new “qualifications” of new registrations.
The Colluding, Corrupt and ILLEGAL Electioneering of the Big Media.
Primary Caucus Violations by bused in Obama suppoerters from other states facilitated by a crooked DNC Chairman Howard Dean.
There’s dozens more examples.
I think it boils down to most folks just don’t like crooked people or their advisor’s.
What a great comment Scott. Thank you for it.
And thank you Dr. Slogan and everyone else.
Hope is alive and well.
Obama is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition. He actively practiced the faith until entering politics in America; he studied the Koran in school in Indonesia. His name is Arabic, and his father lists his own race as “Arab”. This may help explain Obama soft stance on Iran, and where his sympathies truly lie in terms of Middle Eastern politics.
