Mo and Iran: Where’s The ACLU When U Need Them?
Posted on October 22, 2008
Think the ACLU, and the other civil and human rights groups, will rush to get involved? U.S. student arrested in Tehran while working on thesis project
Officials in the United States are looking into the recent arrest of an Iranian-American student in Tehran who was working on a research project on women’s rights in Iran.
Esha Momeni, a graduate student at California State University-Northridge, was arrested October 15 in Tehran for unlawfully passing another vehicle while driving, according to Change For Equality, an Iranian women’s movement.
ACLU? Human Rights Watch? Hello? It gets better
Iranian officials had promised Momeni’s family that she would be immediately released if the news of her arrest was not published, the organization said.
In other words, don’t publish our horrific abuses or else.
Perhaps the ACLU could explain what the Constitution actually means to Mo Dowd. Even in their highly skewed view of it, they still have a firmer grasp
..blah blah blah PDS blah blah Colin Powell blah blah the Republicans’ argument that using taxes to “spread the wealth” was socialist when the purpose of taxes is to spread the wealth; blah blah blah.
Uh, no, Mo. The purpose of taxes, per the United States Constitution, are that they are supposed to be apportioned among the States, just like Representatives, based on population (Article 1 Section 2), and “to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States.” Much of that welfare is laid out, such as a military, a navy, post offices and post roads, running courts, running the federal government, supporting patents (short version), and, oh, hell, you know what it means. Nowhere does it say the money should be used to take from those who are doing well and give it to the parasites of society as a handout.
PS: just to be clear, some people truly need a hand, and we should help them. With a hand up, not a handout.

I’m sorry, but despite rereading your post several times, I cannot understand what connection you are trying to make between the ACLU and Momeni. In any case, the ACLU fights for civil liberties through the American judicial system so this matter is not in their “jurisdiction,” so to speak. I would assume they are as outraged as the rest of us.
Also, I don’t know if you read Dowd’s entire piece but the comment you excerpted was only made in passing; the piece focused on religious discrimination, not taxes or “socialism.” Your constitutional expert says that taxes be used to provide “for the general Welfare” which could certainly be interpreted to include aid programs for the less fortunate. Some constitutional scholars take that approach while others side with you. Regardless, Dowd was not discussing the issue of taxes and you are taking a small comment of hers on a complicated issue completely out of context. That is simply irresponsible.

I am pretty convinced that the “crisis” that Biden is aluding to (twice) is Iran attacking Israel and the “unpopular response” he’s predicting Obama will make if elected President is to do nothing.
The timeline (6 mos.) lines up with the latest estimates of when Iran will have nuclear weapons. (I forgot the cite)
I thought I needed to share this with someone who can get it out there better than I can
