So you think you can trust snopes.com?

I rarely put up emails I receive but the one below coincides with my own experience and I think the facts of the matter need to be known. Amusingly, I looked for the email on snopes and it was not mentioned!

We have all become accustomed to going to snopes.com to verify hoax emails and other facts but did you know that, regarding political issues, snopes is not the source to go to?

I became suspicious after going to snopes.com and typing in the search word ‘Obama’ which brought up almost every known accusation against Obama. Surprisingly, virtually each and every one of them was labeled ‘false’ or had some other explanation rendering it not true. Then I did a search using the search word ‘McCain’ and lo and behold…. there was virtually nothing that came up regarding accusations made against McCain but again brought up some of the same things that McCain supporters have made against Obama and again….claiming them ‘false’.

I then did a web search on ’snopes.com’ and found many articles and websites stating that snopes.com is a known liberal biased website. Here’s a quote off of one website: ‘Snopes is reluctant to admit that most of the conservative political and religious emails are ‘true’ as far as snopes can determine. There is always a disclaimer, footnote or lengthy oratory explaining why everything from crime statistics to reports from Iraq must be viewed and understood through the ’snopes lens.’

Need more proof? Do your own web search on snopes and find many more things there talking about the political bias of snopes. So any of you who have misguided liberal friends or family that keep throwing ‘check snopes.com’ in your face, please understand what you are looking at and inform those that use it as a crutch that it is a biased website that may be good to check email hoaxes, but not one to go to for political facts!!

    What about FactCheck.org from Annenburg?

I’m sure they’ll tell you that they aren’t politically biased.

This is because reality leans to the left. It’s the same reason there’s a “liberal media bias” that you guys love to rave about.

Great. Another FACTLESS set of accusations against an organization with a “they’re liberal” punchline.

And if you don’t believe us, do an Internet search for other sites that make factless accusations.

Snopes uses facts and even tells you when it’s unsure. I like that.

I did the same thing–put in Obama and ALL the bad stuff came up FALSE. I knew some of it was true. I no longer believe Snopes either. They have a true bias.

I tried to send a comment here with a trackback to my site. Perhaps my commentary was too lengthy or maybe I just didn’t do it right (I’m not technically very proficient).
If you want some more ammunition- – -based on my personal experience checking out SNOPES conclusion by talking with original sources- – -visit my blog and read the Snopes posting: http://www.thenationalintelligence.com

All this time and not one reader of this dreck has come up with a fact or two against the integrity of Snopes? Just schoolyard “liberal” name calling and unsupported “I don’t like ‘em” stuff? Sheesh!

My Dad served as an orderly for General Black Jack Pershing. I know the story of him dipping bullets in pig’s blood and shooting 49 Muslim terrorists and letting the 50th one go to tell others is TRUE but Snopes writes a real wishy-washy tale of the account saying they are not sure if it is true or not. All they are trying to do is protect Muslim sensitivities. We need more Black Jack Pershings today!

This is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read….suggesting that we go to some other websites that will tell us that “snopes is biased”? You can find “websites” that will tell you ANYTHING you want to hear!!! You are trying to discredit a website by suggesting that other websites have called it “biased” but you have given no specific websites nor any basis for why we should trust THOSE websites over any other? As for the fact that there were so many “false” Obama chain emails and no McCain ones….did it ever occur to you people that maybe it’s because they WERE false!? Snopes already addressed this issue — they said that during the election they were only sent a couple of emails regarding McCain. It went something like this: 1 was true, 1 was false and one was favorable to McCain (not a negative email) and that one was true. I’m not saying that “liberals” (as you call them)do not ever make exaggerated or false claims…but “chain emails” are not how they go about it. This is a distinctly “conservative” method. I worked on the Obama campaign and was on numerous email lists, so I am quite certain that if there were a ton of “anti-McCain” emails flying around during the election, I certainly should have received at least 1! If anyone out there who thinks that the lack of Anti-McCain emails is proof of Snopes “bias” has even a handful of those emails to show, I’d love to see them! Show us all those emails that Snopes “failed” to fact check. Anyone?
Oh and I love this….”here’s a quote from one website…Snopes is reluctant to admit that most conservative and religious emails are true”. A 5th grader would know that this statement cannot be a “fact”….how does this “website” KNOW what Snopes is reluctant to do? That’s ridiculous. If you’re going to try to discredit Snopes, you’ll have to do better than that! Snopes would never even fact check a statement like that — they would say that this cannot be proven right or wrong — no one can know what someone else is thinking. If they can’t prove something, they say so. This discrediting Snopes BS is just because people get irritated when someone emails them back facts that discredit these far fetched insane emails they WANT to be true and that they were too lazy to bother making an effort to verify before they hit the “forward” button. When you people get an email about how someone is robbing women by placing baby carseats on the side of the road….don’t you WANT to know if it’s actually true before you go “Oh wow, that’s awful!” and send it off to everyone you know?!? Almost EVERY chain email is false. Very, very few of them have any truth to them, and the ones that do are so distorted by the time you get them that they have very little truth left.
