A note from Radarsite: Normally in this space I would provide some sort of personal commentary or response. However, in this particular case all I can say is — WOW!!! – rg
Update: Not surprisingly, this article has upset a lot of folks on the left. lol
And again, not surprisingly, despite the source being prominently displayed at the top of this article, they are already questioning the source for this poll. Nasty, pathetic little people, aren’t they?

Those in Uniform, serving this country and those of us who retired after serving this country are particularly aware of what a disaster a President obama would be. I do like the fact that retirees are 72 to 20 for Captain McCain. I am one of that 72 percent and proud of it.
I don’t think there’s a poll out there that better shows that black people are voting for skin color, not values and experience.
A sad state of affairs.
Huh, just about every aspect of the military supports McCain over Obama by a large margin. What a startling revelation!
Oh, well, at least Obama has the support of the international community. Oh, wait, that’s completely meaningless.
Not surprisingly, the “non-partisan” IAVA doesn’t trust the poll;
http://tinyurl.com/4ps5lz
Of course when the Executive Director is a HuffPo contributor, and one of the founding members is Obama’s Vet Director, it’s kinda tough to make the case for being non-partisan, isn’t it?
Wow, the reaction to this is…disturbing.
It’s one thing to point out the poll was voluntary or whatever, but claiming that the military is “a political jump ball” and fiercely insisting that the military has no discernible preference is just a complete disconnect from reality. It would be exactly like (statistically) McCainiacs insisting that McCain was really going to carry university campuses this fall.
It’s SO obvious that “BAMBAM” has no experience in running this country when you couldn’t even do his job as a senator( voting present).
McCain at least as the experience and unquestionably a proud American and a dedicated polititian.
So what explains the fact that Colin Powell just came out in support of Obama? Powell said on Meet the Press that he felt that Obama would be better for America than McCain.
Yes, Powell endorsed Obama, because he has the common sense to know that we have an occupation in Iraq, not a war, and you cannot win an occupation….look at Palestine. We can’t afford to keep throwing money into a hole in Iraq, when the real threat is in the Afghanisan/Pakistan region. And, yes, blacks overwhelmingly support Obama, is it really sad? Most blacks have long voted democratic, so what’s new? And now, after being systematically oppressed for most of this great country’s history, we are on the verge of our first black president, and white folks think blacks should not be proud and thrilled with this sign that racial equality has reached a new level? We still have a long way to go in this country as far as racial and gender equality, but advancements are being made, and some folks are not happy about it at all…grow up, people, times are changing.
Well !! I don’t understand why the blacks are voting for a black when he is only 10 to 14 % black 50% white and 76% or more Islamic! Oh well – It must be the promises of everything free from the middle class ! So why not ??
Polls don’t matter; votes do. Remember that you will be voting for McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden, both good candidates. There are 16 days left to vote, so get out there and vote. A poll matters little if those polled do not vote. Today’s Gallup Poll has Obama up by 10 points. The Rasmussen Poll has Obama up by 6. So, it’s not over until the fat lady sings. I voted in my first presidential election when I served in the U.S. Army Security Agency way back when. But, it’s your right so take advantage.
I don’t question the source of the poll. I question the techniques utilized to conduct the poll. Poll results can vary widely based on the nature of the sample, the framing of the questions, and the method of asking the questions. I don’t say the poll results are false. I’m merely am curious.
Do you believe that being in the military should make results radically different from the rest of the American population.
Stan Kossen, US Navy, Retired.
Educated people support Obama?!?!? I guess you didn’t hear Howard Stern’s Man on the Street interviews in Harlem. Fact is, there’s too many stupid people out there on both sides. You have to ask yourself what is best for the country, not your wallet, not your job, not for your “community”, lobby, special interest, whatever it may be. Do some research, read up on a little history, get your info from many sources and see what is best for the country, and what you can do to get it there. Sounds familiar… I think a democrat said something like that once. And if you find out you don’t like what this country stands for… we have many freedoms, including the freedom to leave.
With regards to C. Lewis’s comment. I think it’s important that African American vote for who they think will represent out country best. It’s obvious in this poll that they are only voting for one reason. Yes, I think it’s great that our country is in a place now where we have the option of voting for a black president, but seriously, would you vote for 50 Cent? C’mon be real, times ARE changing.
Too bad there arent as many in the military as there is in the civilian population. Bye bye war, bye bye McCain..Hello Obama.
I was inflames when Obama voted AGAINST our soldiers receiving funding in the field. He tells us we should serve! Of course HE never did! NOR has he served anything else exept HIS socialist agenda– Glad to see that VETs and the active military see thru His agenda and are aware.
The election will come around and your Commander McCain deeply respects you–and DID not toss in the white flag, like the Libs did to us in Viet Nam. God Bless You all
Figures.. it’s that surpremacy mentality thing.
I think whats really shameful is the fact that McCain doesn’t really support veterans. This is a fact. Take a peek on the internet. You will find all kinds of veterans against McCain. Why, because he’s voted against most support towards veterans. This is not a lie, its a fact. Look it all up people, the truth is out there.
Check out this website:
http://www.veteransforcommonsense.org/articleid/9559
May 2006: McCain voted against an amendment that would provide $20 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care facilities.
April 2006: McCain was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.
March 2006: McCain voted against increasing Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.
October 2003: McCain voted to table an amendment by Senator Dodd that called for an additional $322,000,000 for safety equipment for United States forces in Iraq and to reduce the amount provided for reconstruction in Iraq by $322,000,000.
So there it is. John McCain is yet another republican former military veteran who likes to talk a big game when it comes to having the support of the military. Yet, time and time again, he has gone out of his way to vote against the needs of those who are serving in our military. If he can’t even see his way to actually doing what the troops want, or what the veterans need, and he doesn’t have the support of veterans, then how can he be a credible commander in chief?
You say McCain didn’t vote for some of the things for the Service men and women. Take a look at the other things that was in the bill he turned down in 2003 and 2006. There is so much junk in them that you can not even guess. read up on them and you will see what I am talking about. He is trying to get people like you to understand that there is a lot of PORK in some of these bills that cost us tax payers way to much and why we are in the shape we are now in with spending our tax payers dollars.
People really need to educate themselves on the issues, Most of the people in this polls will not even vote, and it is because they don’t know the issues or the canidates positions. Democrats are PATRIOTS also, please stop letting the Right Wing Republicans brainwash you military personnel into thinking that only they will help the ARMED Forces, our greatest President’s were Democrats who got this Great country through tough times. I am Black but I am voting for Obama because I believe he want to really help rebuild the middle class the real back bone of the country.
Simple math…..
According to the US Dept of Defense, blacks make up 30% of the US military. I actually thought the number was higher.
Anyway, conversely, 70% of the US military are anything other than black. Are you following me or do I need to slow down?
Since we do not know the size of the sampling this poll took was, let’s take a round figure of 1,000. THat would mean in that sampling of 1,000 there would be 300 blacks and 700 non-blacks, right? Are you still with me?
Since the poll says 68% percent of everyone voted for McCain (680) and 23% for Obama (230), let’s see how many blacks voted for Obama. The poll says 79% of blacks voted for Obama and 12% of blacks for McCain. Since in our sampling there were 300 blacks per 1,000 then the number of blacks voting for Obama would be 79% of 300 which equals 237. That is seven less than Obama got from ALL voters in the poll.
This poll not only is not scientific, it’s screwed up!
bieng a service conected vet I would love to get the the news from the army times
This is really interesting. This goes to show how one-sided a lot of people can be. Instead of looking at it as African Americans voting for Mr. Obama because he is black, we can also look at it that White pollers will not voting for him because he is black. Many will not vote for him simply because he is black. So what’s the difference? Before you take this poll to heart, remember that African Americans are a minority in the Armed Forces so the calculation of this poll could be curved. Get over it people; this is a multi cultural/multi racial America. GOD bless America.
In response to Brandon; it isn’t so simple math. The poll was taken from people who described themselves as registered and likely to vote. This means that a higher amount of african americans MAY not fit this criteria and so your use of 30% may be in error. Additionally. African-Americans had a higher number of “undecided” and “decline to answer” selections than for all respondents (~9% in total and there was no other category listed). Last point: there is always a margin for error.
What we don’t know is the exact sampling strategy.
For all you war mongering military idiots out there, you’d vote for McCain cause he loves war. By the way Osama Bin Ladin would prefer McCain for president because he is most likely to piss off Muslims while Obama is softer on them. Go ahead America, let your sons and daughters die for McCain’s cause.
Ideology… For one thing most of the folks that enter the Military identify themselves as conservative. Indoctrination into the military diminishes certian verbiage including “liberal”. As a 20 Year old paratrooper when I called someone a Liberal I often followed it with the Term Pussy.
So, No I am not surprised that the Brainwashed Military is going to vote for the worst choice John (I shouldn’t have even gone to the Naval academy or flown Jets because I am a moron but My Dad and Grandad were admirals and I don’t have a moral bone in my body) McCain.
Brandon,
Where did you go to school? 237 is 7 more than 230, not 7 less. They are not saying that 79 percent of blacks in the military were polled, they are saying 79 percent of the black “polled” were for obama. So, your premise is false. You can’t take 79% of 30%, because the full 30% probably were not polled. In other words you can’t take your statistic (30%) and plug it into this poll because you don’t know if all the blacks were polled. But it doesn’t mean it’s not an accurate poll. And like someone else said that the nonvoters were not taken into account. 79 and 12 does not equal 100 percent, only 91 percent, so that accounts for the inexact numbers that you are complaining about too. Everybody knows that polls are not an exact science, but that is no reason to discount the general message of what they say.
It’s a fact…90% of the black population vote for Obama because he is black..period.
There is no way that such a high percentage would all think the same on issues.
Unfortunately, women are not as biased as the blacks or we would have Hillary in there where she belongs.
Why would anyone expect the military to support anyone other than McCain? I’d be interested to know how the vote would go down now that General Powell has endorsed Senator Obama. I suspect it may be quite different. Or is this really about skin color after all?
Blacks voting for Obama because of race is just your bigoted opinion, not a fact….who are you to say why somebody is casting their vote? Once again, I say, if the candidate was John Edwards or Hillary Clinton you would STILL see 90% of blacks voting for them….so get off of it. Besides, for every black who is voting for Obama just because of race (mostly black republicans are the only ones that would have reason to do that) how many whites are there who would never vote for a black man just because of race? Race is certainly a big factor in this election, but you know it works both ways, so stop just criticizing blacks as if we are mindless sheep!
To C. Lewis — As the author of this article I would like you to point out where I even mentioned black people. Unless you are referring to the poll results. Perhaps reprinting those poll results is a racist act?
rg
I really do not think either one of them is good for America.
I would prefer Ron Paul or Ralf Nader at least they are not owned by the process that gives the bankers and wall street a Trillion dollars. Both the present canidates are for sale and no argument can convince the American people other wise.
And yes I’am former Army 63H20 MOS from the sixties and seventies. If you have been in the service you know what those #’s mean.
it doesn’t matter if the entire military votes for mccain. the military votes don’t get counted in presidential elections, not in the last two anyway. the statistics gathered after both 2000 and 2004 showed that only 8 per cent of all votes cast by military members were allowed to be counted. are you starting to get the picture? while you were fighting half a world away your country was stolen right out from under you. let’s see how many military vets find themselves unable to find work after they get back here when obama takes office. after he surrenders to the islamists and they take over here, most of you will be lucky to not find yourselves in a prison camp.
Well with the military supporting Mccain comes to no surprise. The main stream media has lifted Obama to star power. Making everyone believe that the military aren’t supporting Mccain. I know that the Country has more sense then we are given credit for. It appalls me to think that The media and the Hollywood elite are buying into the corruption of this candidates associates. anyone with a lick of sense can see through the smoke screens.. God Speed to Mccain. Wake up America. Before it’s to late.
74% said John McCain’s POW experience was “very important” or “somewhat important” in their decision.
I’d love to see a poll like this, except for scientists rather than people who are, obviously, going to be biased towards the person who has been a POW.
Roger, C. Lewis was most likely referring to Joel’s comment, not your article.
Obama had only 143 days of experience in the Senate. That’s how many days the Senate was ACTUALLY in session and working. Well, you couldn’t get a job at McDonalds and become district manager after 143 days of experience. You couldn’t join the military and become a colonel after 143 days of experience. You couldn’t become chief of surgery after 143 days of experience of being a surgeon. And Obama thinks he is ready to be Commander-In-Chief, Leader of the Free World with his 143 days in the Senate? THIS HAS TO BE A JOKE !!!
yes, i was indeed referring to Joel’s comment, thank you Alex.
How did the Coast Guard voteed 2008 election
Wake up America. Read your Bible especially Revelations. God does not condone abortions, homosexuality.Read your Bible then vote your conscience
As a former Marine and Army Counter Terrorist, I don’t see black or white. I was taught that we are all either light green or dark green. What I do see is that our young, brave, dedicated young men and women have committed themselves to the military and by doing so, have by the rank of E-3 or E-4 gained more experience and training than Sen. Obama. Call me old fashioned but I believe to be a Commander in Chief, One should at least have some idea of what they are a commander over. We have lost too many lives to tuck tail and walk away. Sen. McCain know about sacrifice. And with all due respect, shame on you General Powell. I thought you were the soldier’s General?
Well said Billy USMC/Army. And thank you for your service.
Yes, thank you Billy, USMC/Army, for your service! But Billy, why don’t you cut Colin some slack? I believe he took the time to make a very calm and rational decision regarding the presidential election. I do believe he endorsed Obama because he truly believes it would be best for our country. I don’t believe for a minute he did it just because he is black! McCain is alright, but he was very privileged his whole life and Obama had to work much harder to accomplish what he has. Also, McCain is no longer the maverick he used to be, and that is an important point to make, too. We are all in this together, so maybe we can find a way to put the demonizing behind us and work together for a brighter future for all of our kids…
see ya mccain. better luck next time!
