Joe Biden’s 14 Lies During the Debates
Posted on October 2, 2008
1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.
2. AHMADINEJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.
3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”
4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.
5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.
6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.
7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false.

I added this post to Biden Blogscan which contains a number of Biden issues
Again, maybe it’s just me, but I thought the point of a “debate” was to explain, defend, and/or support your own position on an issue… where YOU stand… not nitpick and moan about your opponent’s position. Quite a few of these points are just attacks on McCain’s positions, not defending or supporting Obama/Biden’s positions.
Pertaining to the health care issue. Biden indicated that the average health care coverage is currently valued at $12,000. McCain`s proposal will cut out 20,000,000 Americans from a health plan and give them a $5,000 tax credit to find comparable coverage.
Regarding “lie” number 4, Biden specified in the debate that McCain voted against troop funding that had a timeline. I remember him saying that a couple of times so I am not sure how he lied on that point.
This isn’t a very good list, because several of these are not lies.
Just looking at the first few, off the top of my head without needing to look things up:
1) This is a lie. Obama voted to let the Bush tax cuts expire, because they are terrible. Obama will put new tax cuts in place that benefit the middle class more than the super rich, and McCain can NOT say the same!
2) This is subtle: Obama is saying that he would have his administration talk with those leaders, he is not saying that he personally would sit down with him. One is necessary diplomacy, the other is validating a violent regime. Get it?
4) Biden wasn’t clear, but he did not mean “exactly the same” he meant what he said: both candidates voted for and against bills that were pro-funding troops. Why is Obama going against a funding bill for a specific reason any different then when McCain does it?
7) McCain would tax employers for providing health care, which employees would most likely end up paying. The tax credit isn’t nearly enough to offset the cost of healthcare, and let’s face it, McCains plan is really and truly awful for a large number of reasons, even without considering the tax.
I only looked at the first 7, and I am sure other people can cover the ones I missed. This is simply not a very good list.
