A message to my STACLU readers

To my friends at STACLU: This message was originally written just for my Radarsite readers. However, it has received a surprising number of responses from people who had never before commented. It seems to have struck a chord with them. For those of you here at STACLU who already consider me a defeatist, or as one commenter called me a Tokyo Rose, then I’d suggest that you just skip over this article. For those others, despite the “tone” of this posting, I am far from giving up and I am not looking for solace or consolation. I am merely expressing how I feel about this election right now, and evidently, I’ve got some company. – rg
——————————————

This damn election is different than anything I’ve ever seen. This one really has me worried. Most of the time all I think about is how to fight them and how to win. As some of you already know, I work every day, 12-13 hours a day, seven days a week on this, and I haven’t lost heart yet. But those numbers today really upset me, and I admit it.

If I have seemed especially edgy, irritable or erratic over these past few days it’s because I am. One day I write about Obama’s most important statement in the entire debate, and the next day I write about how the debates don’t even matter. Erratic behavior. But not inexplicable.

I live in the belly of the beast, in Massachusetts. All I see when I walk out my door are Obama yard signs. This quaint little town of mine is saturated with them. The other day I saw a McCain sign in someones yard and I almost drove off the road. I said somewhere that seeing these pernicious Obama yard signs are almost as upsetting to me as seeing Hitler yard signs. Now, I know that’s an exaggeration, but it’s not that far off. I’m just dumbfounded at the direction this country is taking, and I feel powerless to stop it. Sometimes I feel more powerless than others. And this morning, when I first saw those incredible poll figures, with Obama’s approval rating among American voters at 57%, it really hit me hard and I started feeling powerless again.

Like so many of you out there, I am heavily invested in this fateful election. Emotionally invested, to a degree which even I didn’t appreciate until this morning. I am fighting to maintain my equilibrium, fighting against that pervasive sense of dread. When I hear my neighbors talk glowingly about BHO, or I see one of those damnable signs, I feel like screaming at the top of my lungs, “Don’t you know what the hell you’re doing? Don’t you know what he’ll do to this country?”

It’s not even about politics anymore is it? It’s about something else. Something much bigger. I know that you know what I mean. And I also know that some of you feel this same way.

In short, I’m getting worried. I am a professional optimist. It’s what drives me, what makes me wake up happy in the morning. I wouldn’t go back and change one single part of my life no matter how unpleasant it may have been at the time, because I have truly come to believe that everything has worked out for the best, just the way it was supposed to work out. If one door slammed shut in my face, then I had to go out and find another door, and it took me somewhere new, some place I had never intended to go, and it turned out to be a blessing, a ‘blessing in disguise’.

But this time, this time I can feel my optimism slipping. If this great door slams shut in all of our faces, I don’t know if we’ll ever be able find another door. Can I somehow convince myself that Barack Hussein Obama is a ‘blessing in disguise’? Can I convince myself that it would be impossible for one man, one errant president, to lead a whole country down the path to political and cultural ruin? Can I find solace in the thought that there is just no possibility that we here in America could ever go the route of Britain, or be swallowed in the terrible embrace of some monstrous octopus of an internationist EU? Can I console myself with the sheer absurdity of the thought that we could actually lose our sovereignty or our fundamental Judeo/Christian heritage because of one stupid mistake, one irrational move, one botched election? The answer isn’t simple, is it? And it’s getting more complicated every day.

One of you, I can’t remember who now, wondered in your comments if this was the way some of the Germans might have felt about living through the seeming inevitability of the rise of Adolf Hitler, that feeling of being helpless in the face of an overwhelming historical movement? It was a damn good question.

Then again, perhaps I’m just giving in to my natural sense of melodrama. Perhaps I’ve just allowed myself to get too damned involved in all this political stuff. Nobody else around here seems all that upset. None of my friends. None of my neighbors. Certainly none of those people who put up all those little Obama yard signs, they don’t look too upset about things. They’re smiling and happy and they’re proud of their signs. Proud of their magnanimity and their obvious lack of prejudice. Their little blue signs proclaim their goodness and righteousness to the world and they are perfectly content; they are, after all, on the right side of an overwhelming historical movement.

Have I been rambling? Or have I made sense? I don’t even know. – rg

Are you referring to the same pollsters who declared John Kerry to be the winner?

  2. Levi on September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm

Nothing Republicans ever say makes even the slightest bit of sense. All this dread over Obama after what’s Bush done to the country? That’s not rational thought, that’s cult fanaticism. I don’t see how things could be any worse, given the shape of our economy and the war, yet you and other Republicans refuse any sort of introspection, or to take any responsibility for the prevailing government ideology that has so utterly failed over the last 8 years.

I mean good lord, did you really just post that you think we’re living in the ascendancy of a Hitler-esque, historically unprecedented super-villain, and you think that villain is Obama?

    You’re out of your mind.

I’m tired of being lied to.
I’m tired of politicians acting like schoolchildren.
I’m tired of our employess in Washington ignoring the will of the people.
I’m tired of politicians who don’t have the common sense to do what’s beneficial for the majority of the country.
I’m tired of leftists who think that there’s something wrong with conservative thinking and want it banned.
I’m tired of being told that there’s a climate crisis when there isn’t.
I’m tired of being told that drilling for oil is a hoax, when we’ve doing it successfully for years.
I’m tired of being lied to.

  4. Levi on September 29th, 2008 2:55 pm

Well, what’s right with conservative thinking? You could hardly assert that conservative thinking hasn’t been given a chance, could you?

If you’re tired of being lied to, maybe you should stop voting for liars?

“Can I convince myself that it would be impossible for one man, one errant president, to lead a whole country down the path to political and cultural ruin?”

Have you been paying any attention at all during the last eight years?

  6. Common Sense on September 29th, 2008 3:36 pm

I have to say that I’m feeling that impending doom as well. How can anyone vote for a candidate that has absolutely ZERO experience at anything like Obama?

McCain wasn’t my choice either, he’s not a real conservative (either is Bush), but at least he has a life full of experience and leadership.

  7. Jo on September 29th, 2008 4:27 pm

Lawrence, I remember people lamenting that GW Bush would overturn Roe vs Wade.

I ask you this one question: Has he? Has he done all those things that you liberal loons said he’d do?

    No he hasn’t.

People that vote for BHO are communists at heart, lazy and want to be lead around by the nose ring.

Lawerence, when you’re bowing to mecca by force … then think again how bad GW was. If you’re allowed to even think your own thoughts.

I am fearful what this communist will do to this country, but hold onto the hope that with the antics of Nancy Peolsi and company we end up with an overthrow of congress that puts it back in Republican hands to prevent BHO and his ilk from making this Germany II.

  8. Levi on September 29th, 2008 5:21 pm

    Jo,

What kind of argument is that? He’s done a hundred other terrible, catastrophic things, but he didn’t criminalize abortion (only because he only got to appoint 2 justices), and that dismisses all criticism?

And sorry, but you don’t understand liberalism even a little bit if you think Obama is a communist.

  9. susie allen on September 29th, 2008 7:55 pm

Way,way over the top and unfair-you need a nice walk in the country and to calm down.

You have built Obama into some figure I don’t recognize at all. He is a thinking, intelligent, reasonable and rational man-not this crazed dictator you portray.

The whole of the rest of the world would like to see him as president and it’s mostly not because they hate America-it’s because, like you,we want an America again that we can respect-that stands up for ideals, not this horrific,kneejerk,reactionary,hate-everyone- else,if-you’re-not-with-us-you’re-against-us,dumbed-down country 8 years of Bush and his neo-cons have turned us into.

There are mad crazy people blogging on both sides but I was looking at 2 dem sites yesterday and the tone of the posts made me want to cry.It was like people were finding their idealism again. One of the posters said it was like the Jack Nicholson character’s remark in ‘As good as it gets’ and that Obama made him want to be a better person. I think that’s beautiful. You might think it’s naive. But to compare it to the rise of Hitler is just blind.

Obama isn’t the Messiah and McCain isn’t the Antichrist.Stop being such a drama queen!

    Susie

  10. The Machine on September 29th, 2008 9:57 pm

Obama isn’t a commie, he doesn’t have the brains to even know WTF he is.

His buddy Bill Ayers, however, and a LOT of his financial backers, are indeed communists.

Don’t get angry at the puppet, look to the end of the puppet strings and find the puppet masters.

I see the paid Obama trolls are here tonight >Levi<.
for them this is why people who are not brain washed by your God are worried.
Obama and his minions are trying to kill free speech. Here are just a few examples.
    http://www.stoptheaclu.com/archives/2008/09/28/obama-hates-the-first-and-second-amendment/

    http://www.stoptheaclu.com/archives/2008/09/27/missouri-governor-accuses-obama-of-conspiring-to-violate-civil-rights/

he follows the same economics as any good liberal. with one exception his border on communist. The economic woes we are feeling now is nothing compared to what we will see in an Obama administration. This crisis started with Clinton. We are just now feeling the affects of it.

    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/rich-noyes/2008/09/25/when-watchdogs-snore-how-abc-cbs-nbc-ignored-fannie-freddie

As you can see the economics of socialism which the democrats subscribe to is the reason for this mess not the republicans.

Obama the so called candidate of change is in fact a product of the Chicago political machine. One of the most corrupt political factions in the US.

Obama has shown he will say or do anything to obtain power.

He has shown he does not care about freedom. He thinks home grown terrorist are main stream. He would have us believe he sat in that hate filled church being indoctrinated by Right and other hate filled activist for 20 something years. But when asked he will say i did not know he felt that way.

    These are his own words.

“I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists and punk-rock performance poets.” – Barrack Obama ABM (Dreams of My Father)

“We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set,” he said. “We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded.” Barrack ABM Speech July 2, 2008 Colorado Springs CO.
think about that here are some of ABMs votes.
Some of IBM’s constituent friendly votes in Illinois.

Voted AGAINST a bill letting people argue self-defense in court if charged with violating local weapons bans by using a gun in their home in self-defense.
Unsuccessfully sponsored measure to expunge some criminal records and create an employment grant program for ex-criminals.

Voted AGAINST making gang members eligible for the death penalty if they kill someone to help their gang.

Voted AGAINST giving tax credits to parents who send their children to private school.

Voted NO on a bill to give no offer of “good time” for sex offenders sentenced to the County Jail –
ABM was the only vote against the bill.

Voted “Present”on a bill to restrict the location of buildings with adult uses (you know porn shop, strip clubs, etc…) within 1,000 feet of any public or private elementary or secondary school, public park, place of worship, preschool, day-car facility, or residential area.

Voted NO on a bill, requiring school boards to install software on public computers accessible to minors that blocked sexually explicit material.

Voted YES on a bill that allowed the purchase of 10 hypodermic needles from a pharmacy without a prescription.

Voted “Present” on a bill which established a zero-tolerance drug-testing policy for Dep’t. of Corrections Employees.

Voted NO on notifying parents of minors who get out-of-state abortions.

This shows Obama is a radical a man that will rip as much of our freedom as he can.

So yes we see him as Hitler incarnate.
But you Obama brain washed drones keep singing the praises of your lord and master. But the rest of us will keep up the good fight.

  14. Joe Clark on September 30th, 2008 2:14 am

Obama is just an image. Like Hitler, his minions believe not in his ideals, philosophy, or grand plan (because he has none of these, or won’t tell us if he does) but only in his name, in fact in a single letter. It’s just “O”.

If you are a small business owner, he is the man who will lower your taxes so you will flourish. If you are unemployed, he is the man who will tax the hell out of businesses and give you a free house. If you live in Virginia, he is like your best deer hunting buddy. If you live in Ohio, he is a devout Christian. If you live in San Francisco, he makes fun of bitter flyover losers who cling to their guns and bibles and hate gays. If you are a hippie, he wants to cut the military budget. If you are a Jew, he wants to send three more brigades to the middle east and will go to war on Iran without hesitation. On every issue he has announced multiple contradictory positions, so you can tell yourself he believes in anything.

Face it, liberals. You are on the verge of voting for a man who has no experience, no record of accomplishments, no known position on any issue, no known associates before 2006 except a terrorist, some mobsters, and his “closest friend and mentor” who taught him that the CIA created AIDS to control poor people.

You would not hire a guy with a resume and references like that to be a babysitter, but you will vote for him to be the President. Why?

  15. Roger W. Gardner on September 30th, 2008 2:35 am

Well said Joe Clark. Very well said, and I agree completely.

  16. Angie on September 30th, 2008 6:56 am

In some ways, it will be almost refreshing if Obama does carry this election away… so these followers of his can get exactly what they wish for.

Maybe after he’s screwed us up enough, we can actually get back to the business of getting America back on track, or what’s left of her anyhow.

  17. Ian Pattinson on September 30th, 2008 7:43 am

    Obama’s Hitler? Get a grip.

And just what is wrong with Britain? Tell me, but don’t be surprised if I laugh at you and point out how misguided you are.
