Obama's comments that McCain was right on a number of occasions had nothing to do with an inability to think or a lack of authority on the topic. He was being a good, responsive arguer--and isn't that the point of a debate? To respond to and engage with the other side in order to uncover the truth? I teach academic writing at Virginia Commonwealth University. That strategy--to acknowledge when the opposite side is RIGHT but to continue beyond that point by RESPONDING to it and putting your own angle on things to make your point--is one of the most important qualities I teach my students. That way, they become good thinkers and good writers. If they do not acknowledge and respond to the good points of the opposite side, they become simple bulls raging through a china shop and bowling over anything that gets in their way. Since the last eight years have effectively cut off all our positive connections to foreign countries and isolated us from our allies, I would much rather have someone who would speak with tact and respect than someone who would rage through with his ideas and alienate the foreign dignitary "across the table."

Well SL22, they don't have to disagree on everything, but Obama said that John McCain was right 9 times during the debate. I don't think that made him look too authoritative in a debate that only lasted an hour and a half. Do you?
