Country First? McCain Suspends Campaign to Deal With Economy

Posted on September 24, 2008

Update: The University of Miss says the debate will go on.….campaign ads go dark!

He has also called for Friday’s debate to be postponed….wow!

John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.

Country first, though the other side is surely going to call it a political stunt. Obama says no to delaying the debate however.

“I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me,” McCain planned to say in New York City, according to advance excerpts released by his campaign. “I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”

However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama “intends to debate. The debate is on.”…
Obama is willing to return to Washington “if it would be helpful.” But Obama intends to debate on Friday, an official said.

Will Obama debate himself on Friday night? Or will McCain oblige and rip him a new one on a foreign policy debate? I know that McCain is suffering in the polls because his party is getting the blame for the economic crisis…wrongly. But will the media paint this as McCain chickening out, or a political stunt? I’m sure a little both. The debate is only 90 minutes. Why post-pone it? Can’t he do both? It’s a strange move. It’s a bold move. Was it the right move? It definitely shows leadership and sacrifice. Something Obama just proved lacking.

Stacy McCain and Allah don’t understand it either.

    Here’s what I woujld do.
McCain goes to work in Washington and send in Palin to debate Obama.

She rips him a new one, (or several new ones), and the commercials that follow say things like “As a sitting United States Senator, McCain put his Country and his State’s needs first. He understands that running for President is a seconbdary concern.

Senator Obama couldn’t be bothered to sho up for work…again.”

This is a pure political stunt. If McCain was up in the polls right now, there would no way he would do this. He’s acting like a little kid who walks away from the game as soon as he starts losing. It’s a nice try but the American people are going to see right through it.

I gotta say you folks have one of the weirdest political systems and situations I have ever seen! (I’m visiting, so I can only comment from the sidelines!)

When a proven, results-oriented guy takes time off the hunt for a ‘new’ job to go back to do the job you guys are paying him for, y’all want to dis him…

When a very erudite (albeit COMPLETELY unexperienced, unproven) guy ignores the job you are paying him for to hunt for a new one, y’all call him the next coming and his poll numbers go up.

I recognize the situation is unique, (and don’t any of you believe that the very erudite, well-educated young contender from the mid-West is NOT taking advantage of the sentiment and passion that the situation is brining forth!) but it seems that, once again, y’all are LEAPING at packaging, NOT substance!

Whatever you think, whatever your beliefs, whatever your heart tells you is right, one thing you ALL owe – to yourselves, to your country, to the world (that’s right, y’all, this one affects ALL of us, so don’t mess it up!) – the one thing you all owe – is to vote! Get out there in November and speak for yourself! Do not let some Wall Street Banker, some Black Hills Cracker or some California doper speak for you! VOTE!

Last week I believed John McCain when he said, “The economy is essentially sound.” I felt good.

Today, he said he can’t debate because the economy is melting down.

I love you, John McCain, but you’re just too stoopid to be president. Sorry, I’m voting for the other guy.

This is clearly a move to put McCain’s campaign first, rather than his country and here’s why:
