Some advice for Team McCain

Posted on September 20, 2008

Dear Senator McCain:

For what it’s worth, I offer the following unsolicited advice to the McCain campaign. The words of the day are “financial crisis”. Most Americans can’t quite grasp the scope of what is going on in the financial and insurance sectors (I include myself in that group of most Americans), but certainly a casual observer knows that something is wrong, and pretty scary. How many of us can recall in our lifetimes this many examples of government takeovers and bailouts in such a short period of time? Something isn’t right, and our countrymen and countrywomen do, in fact, want to know what the plan is.

So why not go ahead and announce that Mitt Romney will be your Secretary of the Treasury when you are elected? Why not make that announcement this week? I didn’t support Romney for President (I know that many of this blog’s readers did); I didn’t want Romney for vice-president (again, I know that many did), but whatever problems I might have with Romney in those positions are not at issue at all when it comes to thinking of him in a cabinet position. The guy’s a genius. He absolutely oozes financial know how. He knows the language of the financial markets and comes across as exactly what we need right now — a non-ideologue who knows what he is doing when it comes to solving fiscal problems.

So go ahead and name him as your Treasury Secretary now — send him out on the road on his own and to media interviews. The voters will know that he is speaking for you as the presidential candidate, and will know that what he has to say is your response to “what do we do about this mess.”

Romney would take the position. He wants to stay in high political office, and he most likely wants to really help his country out. He can and he will. I am not so much pushing Romney here as I am pointing out that your announcement of him as SecTreas would be huge news, and would quite visibly highlight the Obama campaign’s lack of any substance on the issue as well as contrasting your new guy on the case with the former Fannie Mae official’s current status as an Obama financial advisor.

Romney, who should have been the Repub nominee, has said a number of times that he is NOT interested in a cabinet position. So to the whiners that didn’t want a “Mormon!!!!” in the White house, just shut the duck up!!!

It’s politically expedient for you to “pigeon-hole” Romney into the financial genuis slot – which he is! But he is so much more. By continually labeling him as the “money guru” you serve your self-interests. You say he wasn’t good enough to be president and not good enough to be vice president. But whn it comes to your saving your 401K and mortage – he’s good enough!

Romney has an extraordinary ability to forge consensus among opposing views. He zeroes in on problems, crafts practical solutions, and inspires collaboration. He has extensive foreign policy acumen and is imbued with conservative values. He is the embodiment of charity – donated his Olympic salary to charity and donated one million of his own money to the Olympics. He refused to take a salary during his term as MA governor. He donates his treasure and time generously to the less fortunate. He is principled and presidential. He is a devoted family man who leads an honorable life. He loves America and Americans.

He is so much more than just a financial genuis.

And now that the truth of the Unites States financial crimes and criminals are being revealed, bigots and blowhards want honest, accomplished, results-oriented Romney to put his hand into the bear-trap of big government run amock and assume the burden.

You’ve got to be kidding. You deserve what you promoted. Sit in your financial stew and rot.

Well, well. I must say I agree with each one of you–Shelby, Lee, and Harvard.

Well, well… Let me get this straight. Romney isn’t good enough to be Prez or Veep,(my Gawd, he’s a Mormon!!!!!!!!)But Mac is to issue a royal command for him to “fix” the economy….After being first maligned, and then used, why on earth would he3 want to do that?!?!??!!

The GOP got us into this mess with McCain being picked as the nominee, and now its time to pay. The wrong guy was picked. Good luck over the next 4 years of President Obama.

Let’s get it right on 2012.

The notion that Romney should clean up this mess is ridiculous. American republicans have made their voice be heard and they didn’t want en economic expert as the nominee, even though the economy i sin shambles. Be it so.

Douglas – take your religious bigotry somewhere else.

Joe– I have no relgious bigotry– I leave that to Huckabee and his Army, whose anti-Mormon bigotry has denied the GOP of its best candidate since Reagan, i. e. Mitt Romney. But, I guess you don’t read deeply enough to understand an ironic tone. Word of advice Joe, better not read Swift’s “A Modest Proposal”. It would scare you.

Romney shouldve been the Republican nominee, and if it werent for the anti-Mormon Huckabee crowd he wouldve been. These next four years will be tough and hopefully they will learn their lesson and truly put the country first (before their bigotry) and vote Romney in 2012!

  8. loboinok on September 22nd, 2008 5:31 pm

    He loves America and Americans.

Then why does he seem to generate a following that puts Romney first? – to wit; “Our country is burning and you will reap what you sow.,” “Sit in your financial stew and rot.,” “After being first maligned, and then used, why on earth would he3 want to do that?!?!??!!,” “and now its time to pay. The wrong guy was picked.,”

These are comments of people who hold that Romney is what is best for America?!

This is nothing but vengeful, narcissistic, vindictive thinking.

Romney has an extraordinary ability to forge consensus among opposing views. He zeroes in on problems, crafts practical solutions, and inspires collaboration.

Yet he failed to secure the nomination…imagine that!

The truth of the matter is; if Romney were able to forge consensus, zero in on problems, craft practical solutions, inspire collaboration and were as skillful as you claim… he would be the nominee.

It takes a real winner to come in here and assign such extraordinary attributes to Romney and yet claim that a lesser skilled and qualified candidate (who couldn’t muster enough support to get himself on the ticket) was able to keep Romney off the ticket.

    Harvard,

You say he wasn’t good enough to be president and not good enough to be vice president. But whn it comes to your saving your 401K and mortage – he’s good enough!

The same could be said of Greenspan and I don’t believe that Greenspan is good enough to be either.

    loboin,

    You’re a hypocrite

  10. loboinok on September 23rd, 2008 6:09 pm

    Christine,

You base that charge on what?

    Lobo

  11. Christine on September 23rd, 2008 7:33 pm

I suppose you are one who did not vote for Romney and now want him to come and save the day. Did you put the country first with your vote?
“The truth of the matter is; if Romney were able to forge consensus, zero in on problems, craft practical solutions, inspire collaboration and were as skillful as you claim… he would be the nominee.” That’s what you think, right? However, He was denied the nomination because of Huckabee and McCain’s dirty campaign tactics and religious bigots.
Who did not put the country first?

  12. loboinok on September 23rd, 2008 7:58 pm

I suppose assume you are one who did not vote for Romney and now want him to come and save the day.

Your charge is wrongly based on a false assumption.

I opposed Romney because of his record as Mass. Governor and so-called conservatism. It had nothing to do with his religion.

He was denied the nomination because of Huckabee and McCain’s dirty campaign tactics and religious bigots.

You are entitled to your opinion, regardless of how wrong it is.

I personally, don’t see conservatives as being that stupid.

  13. Christine on September 23rd, 2008 9:44 pm

    Loboinok,

No, I did not assume. I knew and I was correct wasn’t I that you did not support Romney? I could tell that much from your post. I did not imply you voted against him because of his religion. I only stated that enough people voted against him on that basis for him to lose the nomintion.

I hope Romney can come in and do some good and I am sure “he can and he will” if he was asked because he puts the country first. Can we say the same about ourselves?

Stupid? Is that the best word that you can come up with? Are you not “vengeful, narcissistic, vindictive”?

  14. loboinok on September 24th, 2008 12:07 am

I knew and I was correct wasn’t I that you did not support Romney?

How does my not supporting Romney, make me a hypocrite?

I did not imply you voted against him because of his religion.

He was denied the nomination because of Huckabee and McCain’s dirty campaign tactics and religious bigots.

I only stated that enough people voted against him on that basis for him to lose the nomintion.

And you offer as much proof for that statement as the hypocrite charge.

Stupid? Is that the best word that you can come up with?

Being as how I don’t allow profanity on this site, and I don’t use it much, myself…yes.

Are you not “vengeful, narcissistic, vindictive”?

    No. I’ve gotten too old.

  15. loboinok on September 24th, 2008 11:58 pm

I’m also patient, but not to a fault.

I also know that the evidence that I asked for, to support your charge, is not forthcoming…for obvious reason.
