(Video) Excerpts from Sarah Palin Interview With ABC
I feel just like Roger below about this interview. Charlie Gibson’s sneering condescending tone, looking down over the rim of his glasses like he’s some snobby intellectual made me a little sick. But, twisting her words into a fabrication of his own illogical fear of theocracy was utterly insulting….especially after insisting those words were “exact”, which was just a straight up lie. Here is her “exact words” Charlie.
” Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”
Try not to rely on the AP for your “exact quotes”.
Here she is…strong on the Bush doctrine. We must not blink!
Sarah did a strong job on this. ABC blew it!

He was kinda smug. She answered well.
I like how she asked him what he meant by the “Bush doctrine.” He was trying to trip her up and was caught off guard.
I have always had a favorable impression of Charles Gibson until now. ABC was the one network that I could stomach, but since this election started I want to puke everytime I watch them (incl Good Morning America). Do they not see how they have lost all creditability? The questioning about her daughters pregnacy is disgusting, and as a voter I still CAN”T get over Rev Wright, which is a much more important issue then Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy! The news media is digusting, why are they not reporting on our do nothing congress?
1. She was hedging.
2. I’d never heard such tough, relentless questions posed against a Democrat. They get softball questions aimed at eliciting their pre-programmed Talking Points.
What an arrogant SOB!
Gibson’s eyes were the give away. As he spoke, he often closed his eyes. He would look at her and then look to the right as he finished his question. Gibson was incredibly condescending. I do not think America will be impressed.
I thought Palin did well.
Maggie
I’ve never heard of a Vice Presidential running mate attacked so merely in all my life. Instead of gibson and the rest of the media asking the number two person on the Republican ticket about experience, how about they ask Obama who is the number one person on the Democrat ticket. Gibson is a puke. Obama hasn’t been asked once about his lack of experience, but I guess we all are suppose to be good little sheep and don’t question the hypocrisy. Yeah right.
He was so trying to get Palin to screw up and he was getting frustrated that she is smarter then him. That’s a preview for the Liberals on how tough Palin is. She speaks from the heart and mind not a teleprompter. Like i said before there is a storm coming. The McCain, Palin Storm and they have there eye on Obama and Biden! And notice how her answers just flowed out. If that was Obama the video would have been 30 minutes to answer 2 questions! It’s really sad that the news we count on can not even be trusted any more with reporting just the news and it being the truth!
charles gibson i thought you were a real snob, the questions you asked the no2 running
mate why not ask obama about experience the no 1 running mate. i watched abc news all the time, but believe me i want be watching
you all any more, i am finished with abc news
fare well charles gipson’
thomas lee
charlie gibson was given the opportunity to interview sarah palin because supposedly he would beforward and unbiased. well, if that’s the case i have ocean front property in colorado to sell you… real cheap! how disgusting to watch this spectacle. sarah, you did a fantastic job. i am so proud of you. don’t let these sleeze bags cause you to deter from you wonderful giftedness and continued contributions to our USA. God bless Sarah Palin!
Actualy, I thought Gibson was the one who was intimidated. His voice started cracking and he kept averting his eyes and twirling his foot as a deflection from the pressure he was obviously feeling. All these liberal interviewers are cowards – always have been and always will. Sarah could tell he was agitated and kept smiling at his discomfort but still blew him away as only such a classy lady could. She won HANDS DOWN.
Anyone else notice the couple of gaffs from Gibson?
1) Of course she’s not going to use the phrase “Bush Doctrine.” It’s a term that the biased media has invented and used. It is not a term from any current Administration or Republican party platform. 2) He clearly did not do his homework on the church speech. He quoted the out of context internet version. (I found the entire thing, why couldn’t he?) And Palin took the opportunity to sincerely state her religious beliefs. He walked right into that one.
3) Perception is everything. He was looking down on her, almost glowering over his glasses. He wanted a perception of journalistic toughness; what he earned was a perception of journalistic arrogance and hubris.
Palin got the better of him in this one. My hat’s off to you Sarah Palin.
I have to say I wasn’t very impressed by Gov. Palin in this interview. I loved her speech at the convention, but this interview does make me question her readiness to be the vice president.
Sarah knows what she thinks, isn’t ashamed of it, and is very skilled in expressing her thoughts concisely and clearly.
Then there’s Charlie Gibson. He has to be the inspiration for the phrase “north end of a horse going south”.
U guys are so lost, its a shame. Sarah had no clue what Charlie hit her with. Bush Doctrine-NeoConservatism. There were also a few out takes. The footage jumps around.
What’s the value of the dollar based off of?
Gold in the reserve or oil?
OIL?
Oil is traded only through the NYSE, therefore oil is purchased by the dollar.
2003 Iraq converted their system to Euro. Iran is doing the same and soon Russia.
The dollar become weak US economy crumbles.

Palin knows nothing regarding foreign policy.

The garble-nuts who keep criticizing Palin for being “inexperienced” need to get over themselves. They’re screaming and moaning about having the No.2 candidate being so green, when they’ve shoved one of their own who is no more ripe right to the No.1 spot on the ticket. whoooohhhhhhh….. we can make HISTORY, the first black POTUS…. whoooohhhhhhhhhh
Y’all need to grow up already. Seriously.
Re: McCain on American ‘exceptionalism’ – as a European who acknowledges that all humans and nations have the capacity for both nobility and utter selfishness, I am deeply offended by this man’s comments and ideology.
Read a little history! The British and US involvement in the deposing of the democratically elected president of Iran – Mosadeqq – in 1953 is one of many instances I could cite. Not an edifying spectacle and one that has come back to bite.
The adjectives ‘ignorant’ and ‘arrogant’ are sometimes inescapable in considering the American psyche. The bad news – you are all too much like the rest of us flawed and inadequate humans.
As for Gov. Palin, I fear this mindset is very deeply ingrained in her outlook on the world. I recall Sen. McCain’s chagrin about the fact that Obama had never visited Germany – I hope he will see to it that his running mate’s rather narrow and shallow experience of the rest of the world is addressed.
Wow this last quote on mccain— A) get over your self obama called america the greatest nation on earth.
B) Exceptionalism is a highly complex and complicated idea. Most americas don’t quite understand it… what does exceptionalism mean in an america that doesn’t publically hold to God any longer? What makes us exceptional except we just happen to think we are… the idea behind exceptionalism was that we were to be a city on a hill a becon casting forth light and hope.
Lastly a european calling the US a hypocritial is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. Talk to france about forbidding Islamic women from covering their heads…!!! That would go over like a lead balloon over here. Ask teh Germans about world conquest and killing 6 millions Jews that we had to come over there and fix for you at the cost of 250000 soldiers lives. Look at Bosnia and the Serbs You allowed that murderous situation to continue until once again America stepped in and called the murder to a halt….The germans complain and gripe about “American Bases” on german soil but during the cold war they sure wanted us there and then when we offered to move they were suddenly so friendly again not realizing how much money they made off us. Are you europeans familiar with the Marshall Plan our social security problem is YOUR FAULT. We lent you money after WWII to rebuild and then FORGAVE the debt. Our social security system is so screwed up right now its not even funny. We are STILL paying for WWII. So europe quite pointing your fingers at us when your own situation is screwed up. Keep your nose on that side of the pond gripe and complain about American unilateralism but do nothing about UN do nothing ism. We wouldn’t have had to invade IRAQ if the UN had properly taken care of Saddam instead of getting in bed with him in the oil for food disgusting scandal.
You missed the point I was making – all humans and nations are flawed. I am a student of history and I fully accept that all of us and the nation states we belong to have done things that are deeply shameful – genocide, slavery, colonialism. I was and am admitting it. The reverse is also true, and the US and even some of us humbler Europeans have undertaken and achieved much to be proud of. The ability to hold your hands up to such truth is a sign of maturity. Your country is no different. Again I suggest you read some unbiased accounts of your history. I notice you did not comment on the role of the US intelligence agencies in the 1953 Iranian coup – a very shameful and grubby undertaking for fiscal gain. If you can defend the contary I would be delighted to hear your argument. Do please comment!
In conclusion, I got a bad diagnosis two months ago and I can assure you that I am very glad I am been treated in a local ‘centre for excellence’ in a European country where having to worry about bills, deductables and co-payments unlike 47 million of your fellow citizens.
I saw both the ABC nightly news interview (highly edited) and the more complete interview later on Nightline. I hate to say it, but she seemed nervous and uncomfortable. Her answers were evasive and I was bothered by her Bush Doctrine gaffe. I don’t think it is too much to know what the Bush Doctrine is. And it is a term not just used by the media but also by the conservative think-tank The American Enterprise Institute who published a paper titled “The Underpinnings of the Bush Doctrine”. http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.15845/pub_detail.asp.
I am an independent, undecided voter and watched her interview with great interest. I came away concluding that she is not ready for prime time.
That should have read – that I am being treated in a local ‘centre for excellence’ in a European country where having to worry about bills, deductables (I am unsure of the spelling of this word since we don’t use it) and co-payments -
Answering the telephone while typing is not a good idea
ABC and C. Gibson showed their true nature – a strong bias, lack of ability to report the news while attempting to make the news as seen through their eyes for their own benefit, very unprofessional. But what can one expect from a lieral-loving group of wimps. They deserve their fate – falling, weakenning ratings. I once had a better impression of C. Gibson, and ABC — but no longer. They, both, are among the bigger problems in America and the world. Will I watch them further – not very likely, junk is junk, trash is trash – the old saying, ‘garbage in, garbage out’ applies to them more everyday, with every news cast, almost every program.
The Right Honorable Charles Gibson is gettin’ downright dishonorable lately. And mean spirited too.
COME ON ABC!! WHY HAVEN’T YOU QUESTIONED OBAMA LIKE THIS. HE IS THE ONE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.
Are you kidding. This woman could not answer the questions. It is no wonder they have been keeping her in a cone of silence. She worries me. We are interviewing this woman to be Vice President, or possibly President. She is not up to the task. As a country, we really deserve better representation.
I don’t know why you people are complaining. Gibson lobbed her softball after softball. He explained to her what a doctrine was. He didn’t press her on anything and let her get away with saying some profoundly stupid stuff, i.e., ‘You can see Russia from Alaska!’
“Anyone who criticizes Governor Sarah Palin for asking Charlie Gibson to be more specific about the “Bush Doctrine” is trying to mislead you in at least two ways (http://hughhewitt.townhall.com/blog/g/7656b78a-a090-4a56-9bf5-0e37bdaff80a)
1. They’re pretending that the term “Bush Doctrine” has a single clear, unambiguous meaning that anyone who follows national affairs ought to have immediately recognized. It doesn’t.
2. They’re pretending that because Gov. Palin didn’t immediately try to guess which of several plausible meanings Gibson meant to give that term, but instead asked for clarification, she therefore must have been unprepared to discuss any of them. Gov. Palin herself disproved that premise, because upon receiving the requested clarification, she immediately responded with clarity and self-assurance.
If they had bothered to look, even the Wikipedia could have cured Josh Marshall, Greg Sargent, or Andrew Sullivan of their illusion that there’s a single, simple meaning to the term “Bush Doctrine.” When it comes to any discussion of Gov. Sarah Palin, these folks have shown us yet again that they just can’t be trusted to get their basic facts right.”
See some of the (many) various definitions of the “Bush Doctrine” (including the many variations used at Gibson’s ABC) at
http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/09/what_exactly_is_the_bush_doctr.asp
Kudos to Governor Palin for recognizing Chuckie’s MSM trap.
Now, can someone please explain why nearly every one of Governor Palin’s answers appeared to be cut off or edited?????????????????????
I thought Governor Palin did reasonably well considering the tone of the questioner. Gibson was condescending in manner, and most of his questions were designed to try to trip her up, including his follow-ups when he didn’t get the answer he wanted. To ask a Vice Presidential candidate whether we have the right to invade Pakistan (currently an ally in the War on Terror) if we know bin Laden is there, what kind of answer are you expecting? She tried to answer diplomatically and he kept demanding a “yes” or “no”. At one point he even said “I got lost there in a blizzard of words. Was that a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’?” What a jerk.
He went on to misquote her comments about praying that our troops being sent into harm’s way are doing God’s will, so that it made her sound like a bible-thumping nut. When she challenged the accuracy of his quotation, he stood firm, saying “exact words.” He was WRONG. He owes her an apology. She went on to handle the question well, by the way.
She did almost as well as could be expected, given her limited experience in these areas (national policy and being hostilely interviewed by a national reporter from Washington D.C.), and I predict she’ll get better as the campaign goes on.
If McCain were younger, then we could easily dismiss her lack of understanding of the basic issues and her inability to handle just a reporter, but given McCain’s age, this was a very irresponsible choice by him.
If she can’t even handle Gibson, what will she do if, heaven forbid, she becomes president? Do we really think she is capable of handling the national political landscape and world affairs with competence AND nuance?
Someone else posted this list on another comment section.
This is a list of the questions asked Obama by Gibson compared to the questions asked Palin by Gibson.
Charlie Gibson interviewed Obama and Palin. Below are the questions. Who do you think is being vetted and who is the media hiding and treating with kid gloves?
Obama interview:
How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?
How does it feel to “win”?
How does your family feel about your “winning” breaking a glass ceiling?
Who will be your VP?
Should you choose Hillary Clinton as VP?
Will you accept public finance?
What issues is your campaign about?
Will you visit Iraq?
Will you debate McCain at a town hall?
What did you think of your competitor’s [Clinton] speech?
Palin interview:
Do you have enough qualifications for the job you’re seeking? Specifically have you visited foreign countries and met foreign leaders?
Aren’t you conceited to be seeking this high level job?
Questions about foreign policy
-territorial integrity of Georgia
-allowing Georgia and Ukraine to be members of NATO
-NATO treaty
-Iranian nuclear threat
-what to do if Israel attacks Iran
-Al Qaeda motivations
-the Bush Doctrine
-attacking terrorists harbored by Pakistan
Is America fighting a holy war? [misquoted Palin]
Obviously, Gibson and his smug attitude were trying to trip Palin. I’d like to see his demeanor in the Obama interview and see if he was so smug and condiscending with Obama
Charlie Gibson…….How amuzing you were to Americans, while the Democrats applauded you.
Well it didn’t work Charlie. Governor Palin has more respect now than ever… and more votes also.
The editing by you and your staff of Liberals only harmed you and your network. ABC will continue to loose those of us who thought ABC was a unbais network. After all we did see you elect Bill Clinton, but we did stop Gore and Mr. Swift Boater from forming us further into a Socialist French country.
