Why Hasn’t Obama Fired Howard Gutman?

Posted on September 6, 2008

First Obama said this:

Take special note of this part:

Our people were not involved in any way with this, and they will not be. And if I ever thought there was someone in my campaign that was involved in something like that they’d be fired!

Then Howard Gutman, a member of the Obama campaign’s National Finance Committee, said this:

This has nothing to do with gender, whether Todd Palin was the nominee or Sarah Palin was the nominee,” [Howard] Gutman said. “If my daughter had just come home at 17 years old and said, ‘Mom, Dad, I’m pregnant, we have a family problem,’ I wouldn’t say, ‘You know what we’re going to do? We’re going to take this private family problem…and you know what I’m going to do? I’m going to go on the international stage and broadcast this to the world.’”

Gutman continued, “this wasn’t a working mother issue, this was a parent issue…The proper attack is not that a woman shouldn’t run for vice president with five kids, it’s that a parent, when they have a family in need, a Down’s baby who needs them — mother or father.”

“So you are judging her parenting skills,” Ingraham said. “You’re saying you don’t think she’s a good parent for doing this job.”

“I’m saying the proper criticism is not that it’s a woman or man – it doesn’t matter whether it’s Todd or Sarah,” Gutman said.

So, Obama fired him right? Wrong! Is Obama a liar? Looks to me like his whole thing about “new politics” is a bunch of song and dance.

You ask, “Is Obama a liar?”

The answer to that question is an unqualified YES.

Many times over and proven by his own statements.

    Next question.

  2. Sidana on September 6th, 2008 12:55 pm

Why would Obama fire someone for something he might be very responsible for orchestrating?

  3. Jaded on September 6th, 2008 1:07 pm

Obama will be lucky to get 5 states total with the way it’s going at this juncture….and let me remind people that the “bradley” effect is real….so when you see him at 48 percent just remove 10 percent of that due to the racism factor. You may not like it but there are white racist’s just like 98 percent of blacks are voting for Obama because of race but it is a KNOWN FACT and you will see it on 11-4.

  4. Grandmago on September 6th, 2008 1:26 pm

The media needs to ask every Obama spokesman WHY Gutman has not been fired over his comments on the Palin family. Obama himself needs to be asked that question. But we already know his answer……uh, duh, um, er,
…..I’ll get back to you on this! I have felt all along that McCain would take 45 states – and I think that is conservative. I know this country is different now from races in the past but lesser left leaning dem candidates have barely won their home state and nothing else. This country is not as left leaning as the left would have you believe.

Howard needs to fired….again and again and again…..
Oh…”My name is Barack Obama and I approved this interview….”

Howard Gutman has given us a chance to judge the truthfulness of Obama’s claim that he will fire anyone on his campaign that makes comments involving Sarah Palin’s family. Besides the fact that I think Gutman is a complete loser-of-a-human-being for making those statements, it is clear to me that he is representing Obama and that his comments are a direct attack on the family. Senator Obama, keep your word and make Gutman an example by firing him! How is Obama going to lead the country, when he can’t even get the democrats to stop picking on a little seventeen-year-old girl? That doesn’t seem like very effective leadership to me. He claimed he is in charge of his campaign and that shows his “executive” ability, but it doesn’t seem like anyone that works for him is actually listening. Gutman is a test for the Obama camp. Either Obama sanctions these attacks on the Palin family, or he will keep his word and fire Gutman.

So Howard tell us why your daughter is perfect and how you are the perfect parent.

I know Howard Gutman personally. He is a brilliant, honorable man working for his beliefs and the country he loves. He is devoted to his family and has made great sacrifices on their behalf. I disagree with his political affiliations, and have told him this, but I would never impugn the man’s sincerity or character.

Howard Gutman made the most terrible insult towards men.
Why can’t fathers raise their children?
Is Howard Gutman saying that men are incapable of raising their children?
If so, how did Senator Biden raise his children by himself?
And most importantly, how did I raise my son by myself for the past ten years if men are so incapable of doing so.
I’m sure Mr. Palin is not going to stay in Alaska while his wife is living in Washington D. C.
I’m confident, Mr. Palin is going to do like REAL MEN do and support his spouse in her endeavors as REAL WOMEN do when their spouse’s wishes to endeavor in like activities.
I’m also confident that Mr. Palin is not only going to continue his role as a father in raising his children, but gladly assume total responsibility for raising his children as Senator Biden and I, myself have successfully done.

I know Howard personally, and though I disagree with him politically, I know he is a man of great character who has made sacrifices for his family and is only involved in politics because he wants what is best for the country. If you’ve never been on a radio show before you don’t know how hard it is to not make a mistake and say something silly. He should be judged on his whole life, not one minute on the radio.

  11. Laura on September 6th, 2008 7:23 pm

Time for Obama to walk the talk. Fire Howard Guttman for his comments about Sarah Palin as a mother and the attacks against her family.

  12. Gutmansanidiot on September 6th, 2008 7:23 pm

Words like this from liberal boneheads like Gutman makes it even easier to vote for McPal.

  13. Paula on September 6th, 2008 7:28 pm

I believe that Howard Gutman speaks only for himself. That being said, if he has a crisis in his family (i.e. teen pregnancy, drug addiction, etc.) than he should look at his words. What is the pharse: Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. Please do not judge or diminish other people’s experiences or families. He should be ashamed of himself, and if his children are not of teenage years yet, oh boy, does he have an eye opener coming, and I’ll be on the sidelines watching and smiling. We do not direct our careers around what our children do. Howard Gutman is a coward, when push comes to shove, he wouldn’t change his career for something that one of his children has done.

  14. Craig on September 6th, 2008 7:47 pm

Why isn’t the media asking this of Obama. Barack Obama made it crystal clear that ANY STAFFER who attacked the Palin family would be fired. It’s time for the major media to ask Obama why Gutman is still on the campaign staff.

  15. Michael Loewinger on September 6th, 2008 10:51 pm

Paula you have no idea who Howard is or what he has done for his family. As I’ve said before I disagree with him on politics, but he is absolutely a devoted father and truly believes in his own politics. If you had to go on radio shows and talk without a script for hours when you’re not trained for it you would say things that you didn’t mean or that came out wrong too. Howard is absolutely a man of the highest integrity and character. Criticizing someone you don’t know anonymously over the internet is far more cowardly than going on radio and tv shows to represent a cause you believe in, even though you’re exposing yourself to embarrassment and criticism, over any slight mistake you make.

  16. rapchat on September 6th, 2008 11:12 pm

This is a misguided criticism of the candidate herself, not an attack on her family.

  17. Lori on September 6th, 2008 11:47 pm

Never mind firing Gutman….How about not electing Obama. Everytime his associates are caught saying something we all know Obama agrees with…He comes up with some B.S. answer…Like I wasn’t in the pew, on the days his Rev. Wright…his confident…his spiritual leader for more then 20 years…Yeah Right. Oh yes let’s not forget his association with Farrakan. Oh yes, then there’s Obama’s presidental stratigest, William Aires. As they sat in Aires’home, making all the plans how to prepare to run. Aires his friend & neighbor, the famous Terrorist. He called him a Main Stream Citizen. All these people whom he got caught having close association with, why haven’t they been in the fore front campagining with him… Just wait if you sheep like followers elect Obama… what how they all come out from under their slimy rocks their hiding under and change this country for the worse. Remember, be careful what you ask for (change) you just might get it!!!!

  18. Pami on September 6th, 2008 11:53 pm

Howard Gutman may have integrity, blah, blah blah. BUT, he sure infuriated me! What Howard said was very mean and ignorant. Yes, I believe he was sincere when he said it. He may cost Obama some votes if he doesn’t put a lid on it.

  19. Jh on September 7th, 2008 12:08 am

Awaiting statement that Gutman has resigned or has been fired.

  20. Leslie on September 7th, 2008 3:26 am

The leftist mean spirited media reported that Trig was Bristol child…no one would have known about her pregancy if that lie had not been reported. Mr, Gutman doesn’t know the dynamics of Gov Palain’s family and it was irresponible of him to even comment on this story.

  21. Leslie on September 7th, 2008 3:32 am

Sorry about the few spelling mistakes..it is late and I am mad about the attacks on the family.

  22. Paula on September 7th, 2008 10:41 pm

    Michael

I take exception to your comments, sir; I am not a coward. I did not respond anonymously over the internet, my e-mail and name are registered with this site. I believe that free speech is still in the Constitution. Being a devoted father is wonderful, and I have no evidence to state that he is not. If anything, I had the wherewithal to even express my opinion, as most people do not bother. However, if I were not trained to do an interview on the radio or TV for hours, I wouldn’t do it, I believe in being prepared, and since Howard Gutman is a lawyer, I would think he would be prepared for any interview; as far as being trained he is a Washington lawyer, enough said! Since he spoke publically and is an original member of Obama’s campaign National Finance Committee, he then opened himself up to the court of public opinion. From what I have read about Mr. Gutman he is a partner in a law firm in Washington and comments about the campaign on a regular basis. He spoke publicly about a political figure and that being said, he then opened himself up to commentary. If he believes in something or someone, he has every right to express his opinion, however, I have a right to also express my opinion about his commentary. He may be a man of integrity, as I am a woman of integrity, and people have a right to disagree with me (just as you did) as I have disagreed with his comments. I am a parent of 6 children ages 25-8 years old, I have learned in my years to be careful of critizing parents their parenting, because you never know what will happen in your own family. We all make mistakes and should be forgiven, but the stakes are higher when you are in the position that Mr. Gutman is in, speaking for Senator Obama. I expressed an opinion, as you did. Children and their decisions/lives are not to be politicalized and should be off limits in any debate, especially in a national election. I am sure you do not want your children or how you have raised them to be the conduit on how you are viewed professionally.

I look forward to your next comment.

That was completely out of context. Laura Ingraham had taken issue with a Sally Quinn statement and called it sexist, and the attorney was saying that the statement was about parenting, not sexism. He was evaluating someone else’s statement, not expressing his own opinion. You left that part out, of course.

  24. Paula on September 10th, 2008 8:45 pm

It was not out of context, read the statement again, it is about parenting and that is what was addressed. Do you think a man would be questioned about his children? George Bush wasn’t when his daughters went out on a bar hopping night. Children should be out of the discussion, whether it be a man or woman running for any office.
