Obama = Reagan?

Matt Dallek in the New York Daily News: Revere Ronald Reagan? Then respect Barack Obama

Sounds like a command or some weird attempt at a Jedi mind trick.

The big laugher of the piece:

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also professes to revere Reagan, argued thusly: “He’s never run a city. He’s never run a state. He’s never run a business. He’s never run a military unit. He’s never had to lead people in crisis.”

What the McCain-Giuliani Republicans omitted, of course, is that Obama’s path to high office bears an uncanny resemblance to Reagan’s in at least this regard: like Reagan, Obama understands that inexperience can be an asset, not a liability.

The reason I say Jedi mind trick is that the author acknowledges Reagan’s governership, but thinks he can slip it past you that Reagan’s run for the presidency happened only after 8 years as governor. Obama is NOT running for governor of Illinois, nor is he running for president after being governor of Illinois for 8 years. The comparison is apples to limburger. Kind of like how the media keep referring to Sarah Palin as a small-town mayor.

Let Obama run for governor, govern, give some florid speeches, reveal his ideology (or form some core conviction he’s not too afraid to admit he adheres to) then run for president in 12 or 16 years. Then be compared to Reagan.

    Man, I knew that this crap was going to come up. The media is going to push the lie that Obama is the Neo-Reagan and Palin is the Neo-Quayle. Maybe I can see into the future because I penned an article on Quayle just this afternoon. Dan Quayle really was Reaganesque, in case you were wondering.

    B.O. can be compared with Michael Reagan, the ballet dancer.

    The better Pres. Reagan comparison is with Gov Palin, they both managed large states with surpluses.

    Alaska, except in square miles (almost all of which is uninhabited wilderness), is not a “large state”. It is one of the very smallest by population, with a population smaller than that of Delaware, the smallest state in square miles.

    And Alaska is so awash in oil money that it could be managed by a dog and still run surpluses. Decades of corrupt politicians running the state haven’t hurt them.

    I agree that the Obama-Reagan comparison is absurd, but the Palin-Reagan one is equally absurd. Alaska is nothing like California. Nothing at all. Running California is a big job, and neither of them (nor Biden and McCain) have that kind of experience.
