Camp McCain: The Left Loves Those Smears They Throw

It’s good to see the McCain campaign fighting against the biased media and against the most radical elements of the Left (which is, of course, the Democrat base nowadays), something we on the Right begged Dubya to do. Michael Goldfarb at John McCain 2008: Smears The Left Can Fight For

In the least credible and most viciouscorner of the internet, liberal bloggers at the Daily Kos are accusing John McCain of plagiarizing from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. The story Solzhenitsyn told was of a prisoner who drew a cross in the dirt in a Soviet Gulag. McCain’s story is of a guard who drew a cross in the dirt in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp.

The only similarity between the two stories is a cross in the dirt, but it is hardly an unlikely coincidence that there were practicing Christians in both Russia and Vietnam, or that in the prisons of those two Communist countries the only crosses to be found were etched in the dirt, as easily disappeared as the Christians who drew them.

But those desperate to discredit Senator McCain’s record will have to impugn his fellow prisoners as well. Orson Swindle, who was held as a prisoner of war along with McCain, tells the McCain Report that he heard this particular story from McCain “when we first moved in together.” That was in the summer of 1971, Swindle said, though “time blurred” and he couldn’t be sure. He said it was some time around then that the Vietnamese moved all “36 troublemakers” into the same quarters, where they “talked about everything under the sun.”

It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman’s memory of war from the comfort of mom’s basement, but most Americans have the humility and gratitude to respect and learn from the memories of men who suffered on behalf of others. John McCain has often said he witnessed a thousand acts of bravery while he was imprisoned, and though not every one has been submitted into the public record, they are remembered by the men who were there (one such only recently reported by Karl Rove though it escaped mention in any of Senator McCain’s books). But as Swindle said, this is a “desperate group of people trying to make something out of nothing.”

What it comes down to is that the Left on the Internet tend to follow in lockstep with a few sites, Daily Kos being one of them. If you want to get noticed as a blogger on the Left, you mostly have to go the kook fringe moonbat conspiracy BDS “Republicans are turning America in a Nazi state” route. They even suck in supposed “Conservatives (insert wink here)” like Excitable Andy. You remember Andy, right? He’s the guy who offered Ron Paul supporters to come and chat, but forgot that comments have to be open to do that.

Confederate Yankeedestroys Excitable Andy, Kos, and others, in his post.

Anyhow, it’s funny how the left tells us that it is verboten to attack Obama over his character, his inability to show any patriotism, his wife’s America loathing (till Barry almost had the nomination in the bag), Jeremiah Wright, etc and so on, but it is OK to go after McCain on this. Go figure.

you’ve got it wrong. it was ok to swiftboat kerry. ok to muslim obama. so now it’s okay to point out MCCAIN IS LOSING HIS MIND.

he’s also a chronic liar. take your pick. the story was not in his 20,000 word report. he described three pow x-masses in 1995. still no match.

and his buddy is a LOBBYIST. big surprise.

Hate to tell you this, but the suspicious Solzhenitsyn/McCain cooincidence was first noticed, not by the “kook fringe moonbat conspiracy” types on the left, but by the “kook fringe moonbat conspiracy” types on the right, specifically, freerepublic.

Of course, that was back in 2005 when you rightwingers hated John McCain. Here are some of the choice quotes from freepers expressing their disgust with John McCain for his plagiarized cross story:

“Perhaps McCain is making obvious Christian statements to gain support for 2008.”

“Nothing ‘Christian’ about McCain’s lack of principles.”

“This guy is so full of $hit his eyes are brown. He is a sellout RINO. I would not believe a word he says.”

“Oops, you beat me to it… It rings as a phoney recollection.. unless he has mentioned it before.”

“I absolutely HATE it when this guy extorts his veteranism or POW stuff. Any vet I now worth his salt never ever ever discusses his/her service. EVER. You look at them, they look at you, and you just respect them. Thats it. ”

“I can’t put my finger on it precisely, but something about John McCain rings as phoney as a three dollar bill. I don’t trust him and most often find myself thinking he’s only in this for his own personal gain. Perhaps it’s the fact that he gets his mug on the tube more than anyone I know of. ”

“did he EVER mention this before. . .”
“That is a good point and needs answering. If it was never brought out before, then we have reason to wonder about his motives in bringing it out now. “

    Mike,
FYI – The “swiftboating” of Kerry (that word the left now likes to use as a verb) was all proven true….and verified by multiple people.

Obama does have Muslim ties in his past and to this current day within his family. Not exactly proof he’s a Muslim himself, but, in this day and age…not something to be overlooked either.

So, what concrete proof, other than your BDS, liberal fantasies, do you have that McCain has lost his mind and is a chronic liar?

And by the way, let’s not get into the subject of the two candidate’s friends…..Obama has quite a few “choice” friends…Wright, Rezko, Ayers, to name a few.

    Your buyer’s remorse is showing….

    google ’songbird mccain’.

you have no idea who you’re dealing with re: resume ‘embellishment’.

re: senility, try his endless ‘nations don’t invade other nations’ type gaffes. or mixing up the two football teams from the other pow story.

re: swindle he is not telling the truth. he is a paid employee, not a credible witness.

Politco ran a story about McCain’s cross story April the 4th 2008 and Swindle was specifically interviewed on the story.

“I don’t recall us talking specifically about our faith,” says Orson Swindle, one of McCain’s closest friends and a fellow POW. “We talked about our friends, families, our resistance posture, and that our country didn’t seem to have the will to win.”

Belief in a higher power helped them survive the routine torture and daily indignities, Swindle says.

“It would help us endure what we had to endure. But we knew God wasn’t going to come down and wave a magic wand.”

this is why mccain’s fellow pows all hate him. he exaggerates endlessly.

The far left’s double standards are in full force. Typical.

  6. sharprightturn on August 18th, 2008 10:52 pm

Yes, Mike that is some real high-powered proof there…not.

And the fact that you now have to call the people around McCain all liars as well…….well, that’s more “proof” of your mindset than McCain’s.

  7. sharprightturn on August 18th, 2008 11:53 pm

    Mike,
Have you ever been a POW? The vast majority of us have not….and can’t even grasp the hell involved in it year after year.

I don’t have any way of knowing 100% what actually happened to McCain other than what he has said…. (and neither do you)

And I don’t care who the US POW was/is….In 99.99999% of cases I am going to withhold my judgment on how they survived it. These people volunteered for the services, the vast majority served honorably, …many times were starved, tortured, beaten, and propanda was rampant….so I will respect the method they used to get through the hell they were in….period.

If Obama had been a POW under the same circumstances and someone on the opposite political aisle was scrounging up lies about his captivity, I would say the same thing…

You know I think you can judge McCain all you want on his policies…you don’t have to be an economist yourself to judge his tax plan…you don’t have to be in the military to judge his defense strategy…etc. (just try to be informed before making decisions)

BUT…unless you have been one, you personally have no way of judging the experience of a POW…period…

  8. sharprightturn on August 18th, 2008 11:56 pm

Correction: Some did not volunteer in the Vietnam War, but were drafted…regardless the point is the same.

fair enough. but if you really wanna know, read more. eg. A letter written by Phillip Butler, PhD, Cdr, USN (ret.):

“John McCain served his time as a POW with great courage, loyalty and tenacity. More that 600 of us did the same. After our repatriation a census showed that 95% of us had been tortured at least once. The Vietnamese were quite democratic about it. There were many heroes in North Vietnam. I saw heroism every day there. And we motivated each other to endure and succeed far beyond what any of us thought we had in ourselves. Succeeding as a POW is a group sport, not an individual one. We all supported and encouraged each other to survive and succeed. John knows that. He was not an individual POW hero. He was a POW who surmounted the odds with the help of many comrades, as all of us did.

I furthermore believe that having been a POW is no special qualification for being President of the United States. The two jobs are not the same, and POW experience is not, in my opinion, something I would look for in a presidential candidate.

Most of us who survived that experience are now in our late 60’s and 70’s. Sadly, we have died and are dying off at a greater rate than our non-POW contemporaries. We experienced injuries and malnutrition that are coming home to roost. So I believe John’s age (73) and survival expectation are not good for being elected to serve as our President for 4 or more years.

I can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly that is not the finger I want next to that red button.”

mymain opposition is the same one all the vets cite. he’s NOT a peacemaker/keeper. he’s a war starter. and i sincerely fear his bellicose style and blunderingly aggressive ’strategies’ may truly get us all nuked. i also see littl indication his mind is nearly as sharp as a decade ago. dangerous combination imo.

  11. sharprightturn on August 19th, 2008 12:42 am

    Mike,
If you are anti-war and don’t like McCain that’s one thing…but that is not where you started in responding to this post.

I don’t see POW experience as the sole reason someone qualifies for the Presidency either, but it is sure a data point for character, tenacity, military and foreign policy, IMHO.

As far as his age…may be a concern to you and others but I will take his age over Obama’s inexperience and leftist ideas any day…but that’s me.

    We agree to disagree.

    Thanks for the bantering.

I was mildly tortured once, and it was enough to give me a 1.5% disability. In my case, I turned in an extortion ring, and my superiors used me as bait. As the walls closed in, I felt as if even God had forsaken me. My illusions died during that four months, and I held a funeral for them when I returned home.

What I saw was a snow squall compared the the blizzard McCain and the others endured. I stand in awe at how those folks managed to keep themselves together. None of us has a clue about what it was like, and if I still had the capacity for strong feelings, the attacks on McCain’s service would force me to vomit.
