Obama’s Tire Gauges, Some Unhinged
Posted on August 4, 2008
Starting with The Carpetbagger Report
Atrios asked this morning, “Does anyone understand why Obama suggesting that people keep their tires properly inflated is some sort of hilarious gaffe?”
Yes, those of us NOT in the Reality Based Community Asylum do understand. Not that the RBC will get it, but, Barry is suggesting that properly inflated tires will almost completely solve our automobile energy crisis. Now THAT is funny. The delusional “WTF are you talking about?” type. The kind of laugh you get when your bud knocks the cooler over into the pond, or barfs onto the floorboard of your classic Corvette.
A practically giddy Mark Salter, the senior aide to John McCain best known for his gruffness, told the traveling press corps before takeoff Monday morning that they would be handing out copies of Barack Obama’s energy plan during flight.
Moments after the Boeing 737 was airborne, Salter swooped past the cabin-dividing curtain and gleefully handed out tire gauges that read “Obama’s Energy Plan.” The stunt pokes fun at Obama’s suggestion that Americans improve their gas mileage by filling up their tires and will reportedly be replicated, compliments of McCain supporters, at Obama’s appearance in Michigan Monday.
And on to Time
And campaign topper Davis uses the spat in a fund-raising e-mail:“I’m asking for your help in putting Senator Obama’s ‘tire gauge’ energy policy to the test. With an immediate donation of $25 or more, we will send you an ‘Obama Energy Plan’ tire pressure gauge.”
I might have to make another donation.
Michelle Malkin comments on this being Barry’s birthday president, and wonders who will call it racist first.
Sadly, No! doesn’t get it (shocka!)
The concept is simple: the McCain campaign knows that it will never get the GOP base excited about their candidate because they hate him. Thus, the only way to inspire Winger Nation to flock to the polls in November is to conduct a Three-Month Hate against Obama by portraying him as a pansy.
Mustang Bobby, late of The Village People touring group (cheap shot), at Shakesville tries to deflect from what is, in fact, an idiotic energy plan. It’s fine advice from dear old Dad when you get your first car, but not a guy who aspires to be president. Unless it is president of Naura
I think it’s the GOP that’s running on a flat here.
Get Bobby a waaaambulance!
You can get your very own Barry Energy Plan here. Think I am going to have to donate again.
I didn’t think the original shiny tire gauge was appropriate for Barry. Fixed

Update: Hot Air provides the context the left are ignoring.

Well even Lieberman and other GOP folks were pushing for inflating tires recently. So the fact that a tiny comment at a town hall that states the truth (even according to McCains buddies) turns into this is sad.
When will McCain have some real points? He can complain and make fun of people but can he come up with a real plan?
You miss the point more than Michael Bay missed the mark in Pearl Harbor. And that’s an awful lot, mcfail.
Missed out on the other part of the Obama plan. If you back down the Interstate then your “Tank will runith over”.
Maybe the messiah has visited one state and it was 57 bombs that fell on Pearl Harbor. I realize that a lawyer/politician can never be held responsible for any of their criminal activities. On the other hand you would think that it would take a real nitwit born in Hawaii to flub December 7th 1941.
He revealed another part of his energy plan today. He will increase “plug-in” hybrid cars while decreasing America’s use of electricity. Huh? Only the magic Obamamessiah can do what normal mortals deem contradictory.
The right side has nothing to offer and nothing to say.
All you rubes KNOW that Obama didn’t expect the small, incremental benefit of tire pressure to alleviate all of our oil woes – only you dimwits say this, nobody else.
McCain=Bush is only good for a couple reasons:
1) If you are wealthy – right now.
2) If you are an oil executive right now
3) If you enjoy the small, unhealthy prospect of belonging to the kewl club, populated by inbreds – just as you. You consider it a feather in your cap when you can laugh at what limbaugh or O’Reilly tell you to laugh at. You really don’t understand it all, but just knowing your main men want you to spew their talking points, makes you feel part of something ’special’
History is spitting on you right siders. Your brand is ruined and the only way you can appear relalvant is to sully your opponents reputation – not his actual policies.
I do hope you have your finances in order. You, who are part of the kewl club, will be poor and destitute if the GOP has it’s way. The GOP only wants to use you as a weapon against Obama, what you don’t realize is that Obama’s policies are better FOR YOU. His ideas are better FOR YOU.
Try to be selfish – I know you can do it. If you are selfish for your own future – you must vote progressive. Being in the kewl club won’t pay your bills; it won’t allow you to purchase a house or educate your kids.
It won’t provide for your retirement either. Are you ready to be poor, defending the folks who are growing rich off your support?
Here’s what Obama said exactly in quote for the idiots.
There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. Making sure your tires are properly inflated — simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling — if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You’d actually save just as much!
Fred, the GOP is offering quite a bit. More drilling on US property to increase our own supply and wean us from foreign oil. Building more nuclear and coal fired plants. Using more natural gas. More wind and solar. Investing in viable alternatives, such as sugar based ethanol, rather then corn.
Obama supports checking your tire pressure. Taking oil out of the strategic oil supply, which adds nothing new. Perhaps, maybe, possibly, drilling in a few tiny areas offshore, IF everything is perfect. And pie in the sky stuff.
Go check his plan, Fred. It is sorely lacking in substance and reality.
You do have your MoveOn talking points down pat, though.
There is an online petition to call Congress back.http://www.callbackcongress.com/
Obama says inflating your tires is the equivalent to off shore drilling.
Either Obama is stupid or he’s smoking crack again.
supply and demand people. bring down demand, prices drop. simple as that. quick question to you. do you trust exxon/mobil to drop prices from the goodness of their widdle-biddy hearts? if we give them access (which they can’t use anyway, in THEIR OWN WORDS from lack of manpower and equipment) to ALL the oil in the united states, in all forms, will that solve our “addiction to oil”? looking for energy independence by drilling for more oil is like solving a heroin addiction by giving the addict as much heroin as he can handle. COMMON SENSE (which you so often claim to have) says that it won’t work. a DIFFERENT way of operating is needed here, not throwing the same solution that has proven again and again not to work.
Harry, I would go with both. With a dash of Neophyte.
It’s not about addiction to oil, think, it is about addiction to foreign oil. I do believe that as we exploit our own sources, we should combine that with better research into alternatives, building nuke and coal fired plants, solar and wind, etc. Everything.
The truly funny thing is that the Bush adminstration’s Energy Secretary launched a hugh public announcement campaign educating the public that proper tire inflation will increase mileage and that “it would be possible to save 530,000 barrels of oil a day” if everyone simply maintained their cars.
”The Government wanted to move quickly,” said Ms. Wooden of the Advertising Council, ”because it knew from past experience that the fastest way to have an impact on oil consumption is to get consumers involved in conservation.”
Oh yeah, it was Bush senior, the year was 1990, and the price of oil had “jumped to about $30 a barrel from about $21.”
And Republican leaders were still relevent.
Read the Bush White House press report here
Let’s hope the Obama campaign doesn’t get ahold of those old Republican PSAs – it’ll make McCain look foolish.
Btw, prior to a recent road trip my husband checked my tires and found them seriously underinflated. I’d been having them checked during oil changes but I have specialty tires – I believe the guys were assuming my tires took the same pressure as most Vibes w/o checking the recommendations. My mileage increased by 7 miles to the gallon.
Lyra, it is good advice. However, Obama did not say it as advice, but as part of an overall energy plan.
I love when Libs, who have been engaging in BDS since 1/20/2001, all of a sudden believe something from the Bush White House, too. Godawfullfunny!
I look around and I see so many people driving on underinflated tires with cars needing tuneups……NOT.
Proper air in my tires wont produce any additional energy.
If American does not increase its energy reserves – America does not grow. Simple as that.
Obama’s air pressure approach is loony.
