Banning religion will serve to further fuel religious radicalism; a door is now opened for martyrdom, and fundamentalists will surely love that.

Once a upon a time, religion banned atheism. Will the reverse happen one day?

But then again, religion and atheism are not polar opposites; one can be a theist, and yet not subscribe to mainstream religion.

I’m an atheist, and I don’t think that outlawing religion would ever be possible nor would it be a good idea. I have never spoken to an atheist that advocated that position either, and I don’t think that legislation like that would ever be sought after by mainstream secular society.
Also, that article wasn’t advocating using the government to ban religion as you claim, just government and societal complicity. Church and State need to remain separate, lest we live in a theocracy.

Some Atheists have been making similar suggestions over the years. Its a horrible idea, outlawing religion is a violation of human liberty, regardless of weather or not you agree with it. Beyond that banning religion won’t work, the soviets tried it.
