I share the writer's pessimism - indeed, I agree with the lady: this nation is most certainly heading for another civil war. The difference this time is that it will no longer be a case of the northern abolitionist Union states battling secessionist southern slave states. In those days the combatants actually had quite a great deal in common in terms of their culture, religion, morality (slavery notwithstanding, etc.

Today the divide between the so-called red state people and blue state people could not be any starker; the chasm couldn't be any wider or deeper. On almost every single hot-button issue today they are polar opposites.

In my humble opinion, it will reach critical mass if and when the Federal government assumes a size and scope of power that makes it virtually totalitarian in nature. At that point, expect several of the states to proclaim their secession and the hostilities to begin.

Great article. I'm a conservative educator myself, and I have in-laws who are dyed in the wool democrats.

Holding one's tongue is quite an exercise in patience, is it not?

I am certain, however, that civility is much more one-sided attribute on the part of people of a conservative bent. For instance, look at when conservatives assemble at a campaign or other rally, vs. when liberals assemble at an anti-war or G-8 protest.

If it weren't for conservative civility, we would experience nothing less than a anarchic conflagration of biblical proportions.

We are civil for the survival of the human race.
