As it turns out, the Bronx DA was investigating death threats made against the Bronx GOP leader, an associate who works at the Board of Elections, and their families. See http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2008/07/bronx_gop_chair.php

The threatening letters mentioned that the targets were being harrassed on blogs. So it seemed logical to question the blogger.

It seems the DA's office could have handled this better, especially when issuing a subpoena to a media site. They could have informed them of the content of the investigation and ask (rather than threatening legal action) they keep it confidential.

As for the blogger in question, he is not some heroic whistle-blower, but a former acquaintance of the Bronx GOP chairman who has a ugly grudge against him and has published attacks and falsehoods on the Internet for over two years.
