McCain Supports State Constitutional Amendment to Ban Gay Marriage

This is a good move in the right direction if McCain wants to win over more social conservatives. Brody is convinced its’ genuine. I don’t know what to think.

The Brody File has learned that John McCain has sent a statement supporting a California constitutional amendment to the group ‘Protect Marriage’ trying to get it passed this fall.

Here is what he said on June 25, 2008:

“I support the efforts of the people of California to recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman, just as we did in my home state of Arizona. I do not believe judges should be making these decisions.”

As you probably know, the California Supreme Court ruling last month paved the way for the potential of same-sex marriage in that state. McCain took some heat after the ruling because pro-family groups felt McCain’s campaign didn’t make clear that they supported a constitutional marriage amendment in California, and the fact that the statement was from a campaign spokesman, not McCain himself.

Well, with McCain’s statement today that has changed. Not only is he now on record FOR the constitutional marriage amendment in California, he also put HIS name on it.
