As "WE" know, Roger, getting dry is one thing, staying sober is something else.
With you, I've witnessed my life change in AA. And we've both heard in the "halls" the term, "people who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves".
In refutation of Eduard Said's "Orientalism", in more than one critique, there as been mentioned the absence of three (3) basic factors of Western Life missing in Islamism. Reason, Universalism and Self Evaluation.
One of the most rewarding experiences in AA is discovering that we can investigate ourselves without the world fallling apart.
I'll not list "The Twelve Steps" at this point. But in their simplicity, some of us have found more solutions and awarenesses that all the humanists, neo-philosphers, and "How-To" authors could sell on remainder shelves.
For Islam to endure itself in self-evaluation, would certainly lelave a vacuum.
Peeling back the 1400 year old onion, when their present and future is projected in negative and morbid fantasy, makes the starting point difficult to set.
They consider themselves as having a wide angle view of the world, not realizing that they're in the goldfish bowl and breathin the air of reason, universalism and self-evaluation would take more than a new set of gills.
