Obama Denies “Whitey” Rumor

Posted on June 5, 2008

Its beginning to look less and less likely that this video exists, as the story keeps changing. One reporter asked Obama about the rumor and got an earful.

“We have seen this before. There is dirt and lies that are circulated in e-mails and they pump them out long enough until finally you, a mainstream reporter, asks me about it,” Obama said to the McClatchy reporter during a press conference aboard his campaign plane. “That gives legs to the story. If somebody has evidence that myself or Michelle or anybody has said something inappropriate, let them do it.”

Asked whether he knew it not to be true, Obama said he had answered the question.

“Frankly, my hope is people don’t play this game,” Obama said. “It is a destructive aspect of our politics. Simply because something appears in an e-mail, that should lend it no more credence than if you heard it on the corner. Presumably the job of the press is to not to go around and spread scurrilous rumors like this until there is actually anything, an iota, of substance or evidence that would substantiate it.”

To Larry Johnson’s credit, Obama never gave a direct answer. It definitely sounded like a punt. I know I would make it absolutely clear to the public if my wife was accused of something like this that I knew to be untrue. Perhaps he isn’t sure? What he should have said was “hell no.”

On the other hand, there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical as well.

Indeed.

I frankly like his answer. The amount of hate being reproduced in emails on Obama is unheard of and so so his response was shut up or prove it. Excellent, nothing else was required.

After supporting Hillary for over a year and hobnobbing at several neighborhood gatherings to support her candidacy, I am appalled to see these outright savage and racist commentaries being written about Obama by people who refuse to accept that her candidacy has ended. During the time I was backing her, I never once heard words spoken or met anyone that could have been considered outright racist. What I’m seeing from these folks now has really opened my eyes to something I somehow missed. These can’t be the same people I had associated with.
But as Hillary has asked of us, I’m throwing my upport behind our only chance of saving this country from the Neocon madness that so many Americans have gradually been seduced by over the past couple of decades.
I have a gay son and I don’t want him to grow into an adult that will end up being the target of these right-wing, gay hating demagogs that will continue their push for anti-gay legislation in every statehouse in the country and perhaps an amendment to our U.S. Constitution too.
