A comment on the comments. Obama is not suffering from mere guilt by association. He has a pile of associations, deep and long, with the very fringe of the far left. The wisdom that a man shall be known by the company he keeps predates is ancient. Obama can’t erase the ramifications of his associations simply by tossing another one under the bus (it is getting crowded under there, by the way) on the basis of sheer political expediency. Thank you. But, really, what percentage of people out there have any doubt at all about Wright’s charlatan-ism?

Him being African-American has nothing to do with it. As a garden variety apparently (cuz who decides the labels anyway?) white person, I am able to spot charlatans of whatever ethnic variety, and they come in all shapes and sizes and colors and ages; I’ve had 40+ years of adulthood to hone my skills in that regard. When you spot one, you know it.

Do you think any more than 5% of “us” would not declare him a charlatan? After all, if it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, and (in this case) lives the lifestyle of a duck — what are the odds that it’s an eagle?

Mr. Anderson:

I’ll not follow G.F. down the path of labeling career journalists as living in a cocoon of comfort and so on. Depends on what kind of journalism one is practicing, I suppose, and there are many kinds — from war correspondents, to talking heads, to PR flaks.

But I WILL take issue with your inference that being a “cornerstone” of a community is evidence of having one’s heart in the right place on matters like this. The KKK had its share of “on-the-fringe-living whackos”, of course, but you might just find the bank president and the grocer, alderman, city council president, and the barber under one of those robes — or a future Congressman for that matter.
