There is scant information, but I guess he didn't read the part of the Bible where Judas was in charge of the treasury and had been stealing it for some time? And Judas thought what he did was legitimate? Which is why he did it under cover of night and a betrayer's kiss, and then later went and killed himself from guilt? I know that not everybody believes the story, but it's passing strange to me that people who plan on telling the story would be so ignorant of the only source for that story.
