Actually Obama has the stronger position as he can argue that we have defeated Al Qaeda in Iraq to a point where it is safe for us to pull out and let the Iraqis take care of the situation on their own. That puts McCain in the position of proving that we have not whipped Al Qaeda that extremely or that the government of Iraq is incompetent to handle the situation and both those points weaken his own position. Obama could also make the point that we can continue to train and support Iraqi troops and police from areas outside Iraq.

Obama did point out that it was because of McCain's incompetence as a Commander in Chief that Al Qaeda is in Iraq in the first place.

Jeff Molby,

I am told that Senator Obama made the statement that if Al Qaeda came back to Iraq after he withdraws -- After the American troops are withdrawn -- then he would send military troops back, if Al Qaeda established a military base in Iraq. I have some news: Al Qaeda is in Iraq. It's called Al Qaeda in Iraq....

McCain needs to keep playing...and playing...and playing the above clips. I don't care how charming and loquacious Obama is, he's going to have a hard time dancing away from this one.

Furthermore, what makes Obama think the troops will automatically salute and RE-invade Iraq after he's already stabbed them in the back? Hell, the troops may decide they can attain victory by invading Washington DC first. I've got a stake in this: my son is in the Army 10th Mountain Division and I'll sooner advise him to head for the tall grass first than die for this silver-tongued, Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time SOB.

"Audacity of hope?"

How about "Audacity of a DOPE."
