Heinlein is not a conservative. At best he may be a libertarian.

Our Jr. High just shut down a hate-fest propaganda production in the drama department disguised as a lesson exposing 'bullying'... but of course the "victims" were all the Politically Correct colors and genders and the "Bullies" were exclusively White-Males.

Everyone hates the White-Male... it's progressive.

Heinlein is one of those writers who's works should be required reading for just about every high school freshman. Which is why the left hates him so much.

TANSTAAFL. Personal Responsiblity. Consequences for your own actions. The thought that government can always do harm. These are themes that run throughout Heinlein's writing, and to a socialist liberal they are some of the worst heresies one could utter.

I love his books though. Great characters, no fear of public opinion, and an honest and sincere understanding into the nature of man make his books solid reads.

This book report seems like it was more of a "hit piece" and its going to be wrong, just like the comment about Philip K. Dick being more influential is wrong. After all, except for a few movies based on his works (and usually heavily edited) who remembers the writings of Philip Dick?

Jeff, I wouldn't call it "conservative". The only book that comes to mind with a conservative (in todays meaning of the word.i.e statism, militaryism)bent is Starship Troopers.Heinlen was more in the fashion of Classical Liberalism/Libertariansm (Which I would like to think I'm in the belief system as well). Classical Liberalism has nothing to do with todays Liberals, so no need to get everyones panties in a bunch.

But I love Heinlein. Hell of a writer, and great political bent in his novels.

Rather odd when Heinlein once described himself as "a flaming liberal" and his books stories that certainly did not support traditional marriage and at times tried to norm incest it is a rather strange charge. The hippie morality of Strange in a strange land are not exactly conservative. Though I didn't really notice this in my liberal days when I read all of his books.

Heinlein is one of my favorite authors. His book "The Moon is a harsh mistress" is one of my "back-up" books. Meaning, I read it when I have nothing new to read.

But it's clear that the author of the column can't stand "Libertarian" sci-fi.Granted I think "Red Planet" should be as widly read as Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles". (Another favorite author.)

Oh well, some people just can't stand the fact that most people want to think for themselfs, and not be told what to do

T.A.N.S.T.A.A.F.L!!!! (There ain't no such thing as a free lunch)
