That affair occurred in 1979. This current accusation though is most likely hot air as it is probably meant to give the liberal McCain conservative support going into the Texas and other Red State primaries. You should remember that the New York Times has endorsed McCain and is out to help him not hurt him. They did not bring this up earlier in the primary where it might have actually hurt him with his Democrat and Independent base but instead kept it quiet.
