(Video) McCain Would Close Gitmo on First Day as President
Posted on February 13, 2008
Just a follow-up to the post below on McCain’s surprising vote against a ban on waterboarding. I want him to move to the right, but I want it to be sincere. He can start by backtracking on comments like the one below if he is to win me over.
I would announce that we were closing Guantanamo Bay and moving those prisoners to Fort Leavenworth.
Seriously? Huckabee says the almost identical thing, so either way it looks like club Gitmo will be closed regardless. Way to cave in to the anti-Americans. This is just what the ACLU wants, and we have so called Republicans saying they will. Tsk, tsk, tsk….I’m wagging my finger.
We have six of the 911 conspirators coming up for trial and Bush is seeking the death penalty. The ACLU are going bonkers about how inept our military is, and how unfair the trial will be…and our two remaining Republican candidates are practically catering to the organization. I mean, seriously, wasn’t McCain’s selling point supposed to be that he would be good for the War on terror? Or at least better than the Dems and ACLU? No wonder the ACLU applauds McCain.
And he has been on the wrong side of the debate on homeland security. He supports closing Guantanamo Bay, which would result in granting an array of constitutional protections to al-Qaeda detainees, and limiting legitimate interrogation techniques that have, in fact, saved American lives. Combined with his (past) de-emphasis on border-security, I think it’s fair to say that McCain’s positions are more in line with the ACLU than most conservatives.
To be fair, McCain does get the lowest rating from the ACLU. However, that is his lifetime score. His score for the 110th Congress was at 50%. To be fair that comes nowhere near Hillary’s 75% or Obama’s 86% score.

I can only hope that if elected John McCain can appoints someobody with common sense as attorney general, like Fred Thompson, who9 can talk some sense into McCain. I am not optomistic.
There is a difference between closing Gitmo for the ACLU’s reasons and Huckabee’s reasons. Not all that sure what McCain’s reasons are. The ACLU is wrong to close Gitmo to give these prisoners of WAR any kind of trial. They aren’t criminals. They are prisoners. At least Huckabee’s reasons make some sense. That is, close it to rid us of the negative association the name carries and move the prisoners, without them losing any “prisoner status” to new locations to proceed with their holding and interrogating.
That makes very little if any sense, Nathan.
