Who Will the Vice President Be?

Posted on February 2, 2008

Fun stuff. Lets play the match up game and ponder the possibilities.

Lets start with McCain.

How about McCain/Rudy? You know, Rudy didn’t just give his endorsement for no reason. McCain and Rudy both ran on the national security platform and would make a strong ticket on that theme. Of course this wouldn’t help at all with the conservative base where McCain is already hurting badly. However, McCain probably doesn’t care about the base anyway, and a ticket like this would sell to the general public, moderates, and independents. Its a possibility, and not the scariest one, but I’d say the chances are low. Indeed this would be a nightmare ticket for the conservative base.

McCain/Lieberman? If McCain gets the nomination you can bet there will be a lot of reaching across the aisle. He almost jumped completely to the other side to run as John Kerry’s running mate in 2004 against a sitting Republican president (audio here). Lieberman has endorsed McCain and already campaigning with him. This could be an easy transition. Lieberman is one of the few decent democrats left, and he is pro-victory on the war. Yes, he is still very liberal, but the possibility is an easy one to imagine.

McCain/Lindsey Graham? SeeDubya takes a look at this possibility.

Once he gets the GOP nomination, McCain is done with the base. D-O-N-E. He’s got us by the fleshy extremities, because he knows we’re not going to defect to Hillary or Obama. He can concentrate on motivating the mushy middle.

Don’t think Maverick will have the effrontery to stick Grahamnesty on the ticket? OK, maybe not. Maybe he’ll just put him some place less visible, like…Director of Homeland Security.

McCain/Huckabee? Lots of people think Huckabee is shooting for this one. I doubt this one happens. If Huckabee drops out soon, or comes out the big loser, he is viewed as just that…a loser. You don’t want to put a loser on the ticket. If McCain’s advisors are smart they will steer away from this combo.

McCain/Thompson? This is a possibility as well. Fred and John are old friends. This combo would alleviate some of the tension out there against McCain’s lack of conservative credentials. But not much. Thompson having McCain’s ear on important issues would be a definite plus. McCain actually listening takes more faith to believe.

Michelle Malkin also mentions Charlie Crist.

Of course, most conservatives are hoping we don’t have to worry about the combos above. Here are some tickets they would rather see.

Romney/Thompson: This would probably be the most attractive ticket out of all possibilities to conservatives. Romney gets most conservative support and having the “consistent conservative” on his ticket would boost him big time.

Romney/Hunter: Pretty much the same analysis as having Thompson on the ticket.

I know that Huckabee and Ron Paul are still in the race, but for brevity I’m just thinking about the current frontrunners.

As for the Democrats, lets start with Hillary.

First, there is always the possibility of a dynamic duo/combo Hillary/Obama. For that matter we can analyze the flip-side of that one too…Obama/Hillary. This combo is looking more and more unlikely as the Clinton’s play dirty. I could see the Hillary/Obama being offered before Obama offered Hillary anything. I don’t think Obama would accept any offer from Hillary, but it is a possibility.

Michelle Malkin mentions the possibility of a Hillary/Gen. Wesley Clark ticket. He endorsed her last September and isn’t a threat. He’s experienced on the campaign trail, and would bolster the military credentials if she ends up having to run against McCain. A very good possibility.

Hillary/Richardson? This one has been rumored for a long time. They are old friends, and many think he was angling for the position. Richardson is also pro-gun, and that may help calm some fears.

Obama is the most difficult to guess on. Could we see an Obama/Edwards ticket? Edwards was the other anti-Hillary Democrat running. It would make some sense. I doubt it though. I think Edwards has already said he wouldn’t accept the VP slot anyway. Of course he could change his mind.

Lefty blogger Ezra Klein predicts Obama/Warner:

If Barack Obama wins the Democratic nomination, he has an interest in picking a Southern running mate (like Mark Warner, say) less because the pick might help Obama carry some Southern states than because the narrative that such a pick projects – a black candidate with a white running mate from the old Confederacy! – dovetails perfectly with Obama’s “beyond our differences” appeal.

Michelle Malkin thinks Obama/Lee Hamilton.

I think he’d also go for an older “statesman” type to bolster his weak foreign policy/national security credentials. I’m thinking Lee Hamilton. Moderate Democrat. Long resume with experience on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Iraq Study group, Hart-Rudman Commission, the President’s Homeland Security Advisory Council, and, of course, the 9/11 Commission circus.

What do you think guys?

Well considering my dream ticket this election year would be Paul/Judge Andrew Napolitano. That’s a friggin wet dream. Two STRICK Constitutionalist. (I not only like my judges to be, but my President as well. Oh well)

But on to the mainstream socialist tickets. McCain/Gov.Rick Perry of TX. He’s going to need someone from a big state who is popular. And has some VERY small like McCain conservative views. But I think Rudy will be his running mate. I seem to remember Bill(I really am, like my father, a Socialists) that when McCain and Rudy spoke at the 04 convention, saying there’s your 08 Presidental ticket. He maybe right for once in his life.

Romney/Thompson would be good. I could stomach that. But you have to remember, Thompson maybe popular in the Conservative blog-world, he isn’t to popular outside of it. Another person would be for Romeny is someone in the military. Gen. Jones possibly, but I think he will be Hitery’s VP nom.

And now for the Commie tickets. Yes Hitlery will have to pick someone in the military or someone who isn’t as communist as she is. More like a Socialists (look above). So, Gen James Jones I think would be a better pick. Gen. Clark is to one world Government, and people know that.

For Obama, he will have to pick someone from the south and he will have to be fairly conservative. Mark Warner would be an AWESOME pick for any of the canidates. He is/was very popluar Gov. of a very conservative state. very pro-Gun as well as not a screaming commie, more like a smiling socialists.

But if Paul doesn’t run as an independent, I don’t believe he will, I will either write his name in, or Batman, or Pat Buchanan, or vote Libertarian. Because with all the names mentioned above, there’s not a dimes worth of difference between them.

I’m banking on Fred! on the GOP.

For the Dhimmis … who cares. Actually, I think Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton would have William Blaine Richardson, III as her Veep.

Barack Hussein Obama? Maybe one of the Kennedy Klan.

Oh, I wouldn’t think that Huckabee would be seen as a loser just for staying in the race. After all, who was the loser in 1980 on the GOP side? Some guy named George Bush.

If Hillary and Obama pick each other it negates their credibility. She said he had no experience but would have him as VP? He said she was the old DC and then would put that on his ticket?

I would like to see our side have a brokered convention and pick a Thompson/Hunter ticket. Long shot no doubt but that would be our best chance to win.

McCain/Thompson – the geriatric twins won’t be a pretty ticket against the charismatic Obama or the botoxed Clinton. Besides, our luck they’d both keel over at the same time and Nancy Pelosi would be sitting in the Oval Office.

McCain/Huckabee – I don’t care how hard Huckabee prays, McCain won’t touch him – there’s a reason why McCain gave the religious right the finger…

McCain/Grahmnesty – they will have to double up the secret service if this duo shows up on inauguration day. The illegal immigration crowd will go certifiably nuts.

My pick? (If I must pick McCain) McCain/Steele. Michael Steele is a solid conservative and as long as we’re not running against Obama it won’t look like we’re treating a black man like a second class choice.

Who will Clinton pick? Who cares! We couldn’t even get the last Clinton administration to meet with the CIA – what makes anyone think the vice president would even see president Clinton except on SOTU speeches and the inaugurations?

But it won’t be Clinton/Obama, that’s for sure. My guess – Wes Clark – she needs the military props and Wes Clark is as pathetic a prop as she could find who won’t bother her but once a year.

    McCain/Steele vs. Clinton/Clark.

    Place your bets!

    *ahem*
Just to make a minor correction in regards to SeeDubya’s thought on McCain/Graham ticket.

If you read the post he was kind enough, (Or just trying to dodge the blame) to credit me with this bad idea.

Not complaining mind you. Just like to keep things accurate. :)

In any case, I have a bad feeling we’re going to have a Clinton administration. It will be a one term administration since Hillary and her marxist cronies will promptly move to nationalize health care, raise taxes int low Earth orbit, and probably go after the energy and telecom sectors.

The fairness doctrine will be reimposed and extended to the web.

Once She figures out she won’t have enough cash to “Help the children take out the village”, she’ll go after the 401K and IRA accounts.

I think we’ll see a stock market crash surpassing 1929 and a depression by 2010-2011.

I won’t go into the foriegn policy disasters I think will happen, but Israel will be abandoned. I suspect we will see the first nuclear weapons detonated in anger since Nagasaki.

Anyone want to try their hands at future history?

  6. Rich M on February 2nd, 2008 6:11 pm

    Simple:

    Mitt Romney/ Rick Santorum

  7. RegularRon on February 2nd, 2008 6:40 pm

Evilned, your “Israel will be abandoned” comment, is a bit strange. Being Hitlery is as Pro-Zionist as they can get. Type in Hitlery and Pro-Israel, you’ll get plenty of hits. Plus A.I.P.A.C is a big contributor to her.So her Israel first/America second credentals are lined up there. No need to worry. Why do you think Bill Kristol, and others like him, don’t really say anything to bad about her?

Shane, I’ve met Michael Steele on several occasions. Very nice man, but dumb as rocks. He was a great Lt. Gov. for my state (maryland) but if you try to talk policy with him,, he’d look at you like you had 3 heads. No, I’m not kidding and I’m not trying to be mean. Just being honest

McCain will need to get someone with executive experience, probably a southern Governor. I don’t see it being the Shuckster because he really would not add much to McCains Campaign. Haley Barbour perhaps..

I could see Hillary with one of two choices. Wes Clark or Richardson, but I honestly don’t see her as being put in position to pick a VP.

Obama I think will go way outside the box and pick someone who has extensive executive experience, Pockets deep enough to make Romney’s bank account look like chump change, and someone to draw away the independent voter from John McCain. The Individual I am talking about is the one time Democrat, one time Republican, now independent and always liberal Michael Bloomberg.

Just remember you heard it here first.

  9. edward cropper on February 2nd, 2008 9:56 pm

There is no way either party would pick a white woman and a black man to be offered to the voting public as a team. We have come a long way racially but sad to say not that far. Lee Hamilton is too old and for those who know him too duplicitous.
Look up wish washy in the dictionary and you will find his picture. This guy never saw an ambiguous comment he didn’t love.
Huckabee is slobbering all over McCain and cozying up to him like a dog in heat to get the veep job.
Can you imagine having two of the biggest con men in the country on the same ticket. McCain would have to enlist additional aides just to keep an eye on Elmer Gantry.

  10. kerwin brown on February 3rd, 2008 2:33 am

The national poll I have seen shows Huckabee is a virtual tie with Romney and McCaine way ahead. That is a national poll though and does not really apply as delegates are not awarded on a national basis. The media has been silent about who polls what as regards how many delegate they might recieve. Since that is easy enough to determine I figure they have their reasons for not keeping us informed.

    My dream ticket…

    Obama / Richardson

He’s experienced and may bring the Latino vote.
