Fred Thompson Comes Out Swinging
Posted on January 10, 2008
Update: Even Hugh Hewitt, devoted worshipper of Mitt Romney, says Fred won! Wow!
Thompson came out of the gate swinging tonight! He went for the jugular on Huckabee exposing him as the tax raising liberal he is to the entire Nation. Huckabee definitely got taken to the woodshed.
Michelle Malkin is on the same page:
The debate is finished. Fred will be declared the clear winner. There are a lot of folks on our side of the blogosphere who were pulling for him. He delivered his one-liners better than anyone else. He aggressively attacked Huckabee, showed humor, and looked comfortable on stage.
But.
He doesn’t have the intestinal fortitude to go after John McCain. And judging from the audience reaction, Mike Huckabee’s South Carolina evangelical base is sticking with him.
I just hope she is wrong about people sticking with Suckabee. Judging from Frank Luntz group the focus group clearly gave it to Fred.
I think it’s clear that Thompson ran away with the debate. His answers, after the first one, were decisive, appropriately aggressive, and clearly conservative.
I’m really not sure who came in second. I’ll just say everyone but Ron Paul came in second. Fred Thompson was the Only Important Man on the Stage tonight.
Frank Luntz’s focus group scored overwhelmingly for Thompson. It looks like he swayed about 3/4 of the room. Well, he didn’t perform very differently from the way he did in New Hampshire. Different voters, I guess.
Tonight, Fred Reminded Me of Roy Hobbs.
Winner: Thompson. This performance was so commanding, I wanted his last answer to echo back to the lights in the back of the auditorium, blow out all the lamps and spotlights, for the theme to “the Natural†to play, and for him to trot around the stage in slow motion while sparks showered down in the background.
Fred … win, place and show.
Of course he knocked this one out of the park, but you can’t win for losing. Now he gets accusations of being a stalking horse for McCain.
Fred Thompson stole the show in the Republican debate tonight. Where has this version of Fred been all this time? Lots of bloggers are wondering why he took Huck to the woodshed and never aimed his barbs at McCain. I think that was smart. You don’t want to jump all over a war hero. But his assertiveness had the desired effect. The Luntz focus group on Fox News gave Fred the win convincingly. Now, can Fred sustain or will he go back into his lazy mode?
I think we are about to see Huckabee’s star fade and Thompson’s start to shine.
Who put the vitamins in Fred Thompson’s oatmeal? We have waited for Thompson to show up on the campaign trail, and tonight he finally did. He had energy, focus, a command of detail, and a willingness to finally engage with the other candidates on the stage. He took almost everyone else aback, and seized momentum that he only occasionally relinquished.
Fred Thompson …is not only winning this debate, he is giving the most commanding debate performance we’ve seen from any candidate in either party since the beginning of this endless primary process.

It’s truly disheartening to me that the American public is filled with so many people who live and die by the soundbite.
Fred Thompson is BY FAR the most substantive, thoughtful conservative candidate in this race – in fact, I’d say he’s the best this country has seen since Reagan. In a heads-up contest against any Dem candidate – where the MSM would have no choice but to sit back and let Fred speak directly to the entire nation – he would easily expose their vacuous posturing and preening.
And yet, who are the Republican party bouncing back-n-forth for the nomination?
The Preacher, the Pilot, and the Pompadour.
Pathetic.
I’ve been for Fred Thompson since this past Spring, but I lost some of my initial enthusiasm and wasn’t sure he could win.
Tonight I decided he will absolutely prevail over the other candidates.
Huckabee’s witticisms are getting repetitious.
Rudy has gone to the 9/11 well once too often.
Romney is over.
McCain? I supported him in 2000. But when I researched his “best friend in the Senate, who wanted him as his running mate: John Kerry. I got very bad vibes. I’ve never seen McCain embrace his wife. I’ve seen him embrace Obama, and Hillary — and most disturbing of all, a delirious embrace with a Communist Vietnamese politician. McCain IS a leader in the war against Islamofascists.
Fred Thompson is the candidate with his eye on a potentially dangerous communist China.
I have always supported Thompson for President (OK I supported Duncan Hunter first but decided his campaign was going nowhere).
Tonight, I became sure that Thompson will win the nomination and the election.
Tomorrow, I make a donation to Fred. Will you?
Go Fred!
Fred won decisively tonight. He showed the seriousness at stake this election and at this particular debate. For anyone that once thought Fred was out of this campaign, will have to rethink that notion. Fred is clearly the ONLY conservative still in the race. He will get my vote and most likely the majority of Republican voters after seeing this performance.
Now we know why Chuck Norris always stands *behind* the Huckster. He’s afraid to get between him and Fred.
Last week, I made my first ever campaign contribution – I bought Fred a tank of gas for his red truck.
I’d say he just earned another tank from me.
As people actually begin to research what the issues are and continue looking into the records of the candidates, Fred’s star will continue to brighten until it glows more like a sun. The more knowledgable they become, the warmer they get for Fred…it’s unavoidable.
There’s just that much difference between him and the rest of the field….he’s clearly the only president of either side of the aisle.
Fred Thompson is our only hope to take our party back to it’s roots.
He IS the ONLY conservative running. I am hoping that Rush will focus on him today, and that the NRA will just go ahead and endorse him already.
Listening to Romney last night was painful, he sounds like a democrat candidate…he even uses their favorite buzz word “change” – what a disaster.
The only thing holding us all back from rallying behind Fred! is the fact that we’re all scared about what everyone else is thinking. If we keep this up much longer we will be stuck with McCain, and if he does end up winning, it won’t be with conservative votes.
In my opinion Fred is taking an interesting tactical position. Rather than fight on two fronts, he is taking one player outright… not dividing his attention, and he probably feels that mccain will be easier to outcoment and box in (which is probably true given history).
so rather than come out and take everyone on… he took out the biggest guy, and figured the rest.
after all, you beat the biggest guy, you beat the ones under him. end of story. no need to take all of them on at once and spread yourself thin.
just take out the leader in each debate, and not worry as much about the others as they will be all diluted swinging at each other.
Huckabee is Clinton Lite…Thompson is the best nominee for the Republicans. A Thompson/Hunter ticket would be the best for our country IMHO.
The media obviously like attack politics as they declared Fred as comming alive because he decided to attack someone. Fred has made good points without attacking others in his previous debate appearances and those have been pretty much ignored. I also notice the short clips the media likes to show often contain a large percentage of attacks and are short on actual point the politicians are trying to make. It makes watching the clips instead of debates a way of getting a complete and often slanted view of the debaters.
