Tax Hike for Christ Mike
Posted on December 10, 2007
These are quotes from an article in 1998. Read the whole thing so you don’t just get the full context and not what I’ve cherry picked below. There are some things here that cause me a bit of concern. Overall, I agree that our nation needs to come closer to Christ, but it isn’t the governments’ job to do that. I’m not saying the government can’t play its part, but the best way it can do so is to grant more freedom.
Here is what I take issue with. Huckabee said ungiving individuals are responsible for higher taxes.
“I’m often asked why taxes are so high and government is so big. It’s because the faith we have in local churches has become so small. If we’d been doing what we should have — giving a dime from every dollar to help the widows, the orphans and the poor — we now wouldn’t be giving nearly 50 cents of every dollar to a government that’s doing … what we should have been doing all along.”
Huckabee has a long record of raising taxes. The buck stops at his desk on that, but in a sense, he passes the blame back to the people. Perhaps we all should give our ten percent. But what Huckabee is saying here is that if we don’t give it voluntarily, then the government will just take it from us for government crutch programs. After all, that’s what Jesus would do. Right? This is the kind of stuff that feeds my fear that Huckabee would use the government to force his morality on all of us. Whether it’s for our health by a national ban on smoking, or giving illegals scholarships, or raising taxes to help the poor…Mike knows what’s best, and will use the government to bring us all back to Christ.
Hot Air didn’t think this article was very revealing or shocking.

One Response to “Tax Hike for Christ Mike”

He’s backwards — a fact I hope more people who are supporting him find out — we can’t give to churches because of high taxes. It’s absolutely completely morally wrong to force people at gunpoint to “help” others. Under a Huckabee administration, taxes WILL go up and spending will increase more than even under Clinton.
