Colorado Student Files Lawsuit Over Commencement Speech That Mentioned Jesus

Posted on November 16, 2007

Thou shalt not mention the name of the lord thy God and savior in a public school address! So says the PC Police of Church and Public School Separation Enforcers. However, since the damage has been done by groups like the ACLU to the point that many think the Constitution says the exact opposite of what it really says about religious expression….it’s time to unlearn some teachers!

One such student is attempting to teach such a lesson to her school. Her sin was mentioning Jesus in her valedictory address. If only she would have mentioned some other religious figure like Mohamad or Ghandi. For that terrible error, her principle is telling her to apologize or she won’t receive her diploma. She’s gonna sue, and we’ve seen a very similar case in the past that was successful. More power to her!

Erica Corder was one of 15 valedictorians at Lewis-Palmer High School in 2006. All were invited to speak for 30 seconds at the graduation ceremony. When it was Corder’s turn, she encouraged the audience to get to know Jesus Christ.
Corder had not included those remarks during rehearsals.

Corder’s lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court, said Principal Mark Brewer told her to prepare a public apology or she would not receive her diploma. She was still allowed to graduate.
The lawsuit said Brewer would not give Corder her diploma until she included a sentence saying, “I realize that, had I asked ahead of time, I would not have been allowed to say what I did.” Corder received her diploma after complying.

How nice, a forced apology. The sad thing is that this principle probably done this just to cover his own a$$ from a lawsuit…cuz you know one would have come. Someone would have been offended and whined that the word Jesus hurt their sensitive secular ears, and a group like the ACLU would come to their rescue stating the school sanctioned it by not objecting to it. We’ve seen it all before.

What’s more sad is that it all amounts to violating her First Amendment rights.

Bryan Preston:

Had she mentioned Ghandi or Mohammed, there wouldn’t have been a problem. Good for her for smacking the school with a lawsuit. If the secular progressives want to wage war in court since they can’t win at the ballot box, then responding with a lawsuit that costs the school money is fair game.

The fact that she one of 15 “valedictorians” was itself a sign of PC — it’s becoming common for schools to remove the “unhealthy competition” attached to academic honors by just naming a whole batch of students as “valedictorian.” Still looks good on a resume I guess, but you can’t remove “unhealthy competition” from life and it ought not be removed from school.

“Corder had not included those remarks during rehearsals.”

Why did she deceive the school? Is this what Jesus would have done?

Okay. A Muslim student would not have mentioned Muhammad in her speech. And Gandhi was a secular leader, not a religious one.

Also, she was being a sneaky Evangelical. No good. :[

    I support free speech.

Why did she deceive the school? She should have used her speech during rehearsal.

She is a liar. No one should support lying.

    Dear Erica,

It is abominal that Christians have lost their right to the first amendment! What has happened to this Nation that was founded on Christian principals, that the Name of our Lord can’t be mentioned anywhere! We have our rights too. Our very Supreme Court was founded on Christian principals! Why have we strayed so far that such a few people csn chose to change our laws and rights and be uphelded by our jucicial system!

Immigrants have more rights than we do!!! They can come to this contry and practice and talk about THEIR religion and rights. They can even demand that WE condone and support THEIR culture. Where is our rights to our cuture.

GOD HELP THIS COUNTRY before we fall as the Roman Government so long ago fell because of these very things.

IT SEEMS EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING IS OK EXCEPT FOR CHRISTIAN’S RIGHTS TO VOCALIZE THEIR RELIGIONS AND GOD GIVEN RIGHTS!!
