The larger problem is at the executive level of the civil service pay scale. They are the ones playing footsie with the politicos. I bet they are the ones Warner is more concerned about, not the clerks and janitors.

We have the same problem in my state. The state capitol is buzzing with activity and money. It is the same for the city with our flagship university and medical school. Both cities are more liberal than the rest of the state, housing is more expensive than the rest of the state and there is more job growth and other economic improvements in the two cities. The rest of the state is struggling to hold on to the status quo.

It is the whole nest of thieves: politicians, lobbyists, government officials, et al., that need cleaned out.

I am a government worker and have been for 17 years, I will retire at the end of the year at age 62. I am in what could be considered upper mid-level in Civil Service and when I retire I will get the great sum of appox. $10,000 a year. That is of course before taxes which I will still pay on it. Lets make one thing clear, I do not know any politicians nor do any of the people I work with and none of us got our jobs because of one. Do we make more than people not working for the government? In some cases probably but there are also many jobs, including mine, where we could make more working for the private sector. Do we have job security? Yes. Can we be fired? Yes we can but it is also true that it is hard to do. It is set up that way to prevent the politicians having a lot of power over us. The only ones who have to worry about the politicians are the ones on political appointments. Are there bad workers among us? Of course, just as there are in any company. We don't like then either as they give all of us a bad name, we try to either correct them or get them out of interacting with the public.

So do we have a good, secure job, yes we do but we also have the same problems as other workers. Do we all make over 17K when we retire? No way, most of us make far less, made even less after taxes and any other deductions that may come out.
