First of all, just because she felt the need to assure her friends of such things does not mean her friends were A: liberal and B: asking if those were the reasons he went. Second, and most importantly, it is egregiously inane to put a generalized blanket comment about liberals because one woman felt the need to explain why her son joined the army.

I am liberal, I know many liberals, and not a single one has anything bad to say about the army itself. The only complaints I’ve heard is that it is being mis-used and abused by the Bush Admin and so horribly in fact that they are left to recruit criminals.

This “liberals hate the military, hate the soldiers” stuff is nothing more than propaganda and should be treated as such. Yes there are more than likely some small groups of people who dislike the military that are liberal just as there are surely some that are conservative. But to generalize it fully to either category would be a sophomoric mistake.

All in all it’s not a bad article. Parents always grieve when they send their children off to war. This lady’s reason,, that it’s hard to face her friends, is clearly the wrong reason. She should feel grief for the person, the love, the work, and the hope she put into the rearing of a fine young man. As Americans we teach our children to be kind, considerate, thoughtful, intelligent, and bright. We have always sent America’s best to defend our country. We are not a warlike people and it is a shame that our best are sacrificed. But it is not our shame it is our pride. The shame is on those who force us to defend ourselves. All the one line, fly by “arguments” against the war are just that, hollow with no substance. These people who say these things can not back up their statements with fact. I hope this young man does his duty honorably and comes home without injury. I, also, hope that along the way he learns a greater love of country.

My mother cried for a week when I enlisted in September 1973. She wouldn’t even go into my room! Dad was a Soldier, Mom was a card carrying NEA school teacher. She got to see me retire from active service after 20 years. Even if she didn’t like it at the beginning, she became one of my most ardent supporters of my Naval Career. By the way, I did have a lottery number in the last draft. It was about 343 and I still enlisted.
To the mother in question, let him become a man, by whatever means he chooses.
