Do you have any children? If so, you should know that it’s actually easier to study at that age. All you have to do is watch them play for twenty minutes and you can see exactly what they know. The sum of their knowledge is always on display. Compare that to what they knew at birth (practically nothing) and you have a good measure of their learning capacity.

There’s way too much randomness in that first year for the results to be meaningful as a predictor of individual ability, but if you’re comparing aggregates of different groups, it’s very meaningful.

It’s also probably the only way to filter out the very significant socioeconomic factors.
