Fallen Hero Marine’s Grave Desecrated in Texas

If this is how the memory of heroes gets treated in the U.S. today, then I wouldn’t blame any U.S. soldier if they would stop caring about their own country — not that any soldier has done so. I reported several months ago that a bunch of ignorant, ingrates in Colorado were trying to stop a memorial to a local hero from being erected where school kids could see the display. And now we have a story where a fallen Marine’s grave is desecrated.

Where is people’s shame? Where is their patriotism? Where is their common decency?

The Houston Chronicle reports that Marine Jeremy Burris’ grave was desecrated in Liberty, Texas this week.

An all-American kid from a little all-American town, the 22-year-old Marine lance corporal died heroically in Iraq. More than a thousand people turned out Wednesday as a white hearse carried his body to burial in the historic 1800s Cooke Memorial Cemetery.

Within hours, the grave was desecrated. About 30 sprays of flowers were ripped apart, petals strewn over the loose earth. Flags decorating the gravesite were also torn down and sentimental notes and posters shredded.

This young Marine is a true hero. He saved the lives of several people in the incident that took his own.

Burris was killed Oct. 8 by an explosive device in al-Anbar Province.

Minutes before his death, he rescued two soldiers wounded when a device exploded under their military vehicle. When Burris returned to the vehicle to retrieve some sensitive equipment, another bomb detonated, killing him, his family said.

This sort of thing seems to be happening increasingly and my guess is that it isn’t just kids out to be jerks, but an anti-war activist who has been driven insane by the hate that is spewed day in and day out by the left in the USA.

Things like this are the fault of people like Michael Moore, Kieth Olberman, or Air America — people who egg on this sort of hate.

We can only hope that the creeps that perpetrated this outrage are found and persecuted… not just prosecuted… but persecuted by all. They should be ostracized by polite, patriotic society.

Folks, THIS is the anti-war left in action.

And Marilyn Manson is responsible for Columbine!

    Jeff,

I took that part out before you commented because I thought better of it. Admittedly I was mad and should not have put it in there.

As a Texan I am (I don’t know how to express it). I am not ashamed because this does not represent the people of Texas that i know. This foul deed was done by someone who is deranged. I do not seek confrontation. But it will take confrontation to bring these people out in the open so that they can be shunned by decent people.

    And yet…

Folks, THIS is the anti-war left in action.

    …stays?

It was the act of one, maybe two idiots. I suppose the pro-war right is filled with saints?

  5. Joe Lamb on October 23rd, 2007 3:02 am

We are not saints but we are patriots. I have pictures of people who are blazing on fire jumping from the top floors of the World Trade center. I also remember watching this live on TV. These jihadists have threatened to do even more next time. Why are fighting a war in Iraq? It is a better place to stop them than in our own streets.

“It was the act of one, maybe two idiots. I suppose the pro-war right is filled with saints?”

Well…all one has to do is to look at both sides and come to the truth.

Treason runs deep in the anti-war leftist camp. No question.

Jeff, I suppose you can provide links to vandalism caused by
    ‘pro-war’ activists?

That’s good, Joe. Keep your blood at a steady boil. We don’t want you to start thinking rationally or anything.

    Treason

You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means.

  9. Otter on October 23rd, 2007 11:43 am

I didn’t think you could answer my question with links to
    any news stories, jeff.

Jeff Molby – tell us what YOU think the definition of treason is, okay? I can’t wait to hear this one. Have a nice day.

    ‘pro-war’ activists?

Sorry, Otter. I didn’t refresh before posting.

Why would there be? The “pro-war” contingent is getting its way. Protests, and the inevitable examples of a few people that go too far, are only held by the faction that’s out of power.

My point was more general in that the “Right” has some skeletons in its closet on the issues where it’s not in power. Google: Abortion Protests Arrests if you don’t believe me.

    Every crowd has its idiot.

Jeff Molby – tell us what YOU think the definition of treason is, okay?

“Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”

This is where many people like to point to the “aid and comfort” clause and say, “See! They’re comforting the enemy by not uniting behind our President!”

But that ignores the rest of the sentence. The first part of the sentence talks about actually levying war against the USA. I think we can all agree that desecrating a grave doesn’t reach that level.

The second half of the sentence is “in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” The “aid and comfort” clause is a clarifier for the “adhering” clause. It doesn’t stand on its own.

That means that to be guilty of treason, you have to “adhere” to the enemy and give him “aid and comfort”.

Adhere: to give support or maintain loyalty

Show me that the perpetrator is “giv[ing] support or maintain[ing] loyalty” to the enemy and then we’ll talk.

What does abortion have to do with Leftists trashing a
soldier’s grave, or for that matter the war? If you can’t find
a single news article about ‘pro-war’ people injuring someone
they disagree with, vandalizing property to make their point, or
doing everything they can to shut down ‘dialogue,’ then please
    admit so.

  13. Other Ed on October 23rd, 2007 1:22 pm

Boy, it sure doesn’t take much to start jumping to conclusions, does it?

In the absence of other evidence, what do you want to bet that this
vandalism, like most other pointless vandalism, is caused by some drunk kids who think it’s fun to break things.

Don’t you think there are enough things to argue about without having to invent reasons?

I readily admit it, Otter. The faction in power has no need for protests, let alone violent protests. Every group has its share of idiots. The only difference is that the idiots in the out-of-power faction are motivated to action whereas the idiots in the in-power faction can rest comfortably knowing they’re getting their way.

Turn the tables and the various idiots will demobilize and mobilize respectively.

This isn’t about moral superiority. If you don’t believe me, imagine President Gore acting passively in the wake of 9/11. You don’t think there would have been protests by people who wanted the government to take action? You don’t think some of them cross the line and get violent?

A young Marine, a hero’s grave was desecrated. If this is free speech, and that is stretching it a bit, then this hero died defending that right.

Prowar is getting their way? Is that newspeak for saying the cowards and traitors have not pulled out and let the terrorists have their way? It was mentioned giving aid and comfort to the enemy as though no one is doing it. Every time a political leaders moans and laments about how we cannot win the war, all is lost, he has encouraged our enemy and given them aid and comfort. Every news report highlighting a nonexistent atrocity, while refusing to report anything positive, has given aid and comfort to the enemy. “The surge is a failure” they cried, before the troops even arrived. That comforted the enemy and encouraged him in his attack. Now those same detractors have been forced to backpedal when the surge worked.

At this point we have the terrorists coming out to attack armed troops who, of all the nerve, dare to shoot back! Which do you prefer. Terrorists taking on armed troops over there and being defeated. Or do you choose to give them a staging ground from which to attack their favorite targets freely, unarmed civilians whom they can slaughter? To have 9/11 over and over again.

A hero’s grave was desecrated by cowards not fit to polish his boots. They deserve nothing but disgust.

This quote from Ned Dolan is fitting tribute to Lance Corporal Jeremy Burris.

“Freedom is not free, but the U.S. Marine Corps will pay most of your share. ”

Jeff, my blood is not at a boil and my cognition is hitting on all cylinders. If you want to continue, be careful not to put your foot in a trap. The problem is that your head is full of items that don’t prove to be factual. So, though you think you are informed you are really misinformed. This makes it very easy for you to be intelligent but still believein a lie.

Bob, you’re the first to mention free speech. No one defended the idiot did this. I just took issue with the attempts to paint with a broad brush. And you really should re-read the second half of comment 12.

Ok, Joe. Keep assuming that those who disagree with you are simply misinformed. Life is certainly easier that way.

Police arrested a guy for stealing the stands to sell to a florist. He didn’t have any anti-war connection as far as the police could see.
