Exclusion of Alan Keyes

Posted on October 19, 2007

We read:

In what he called “a major abuse of the electoral process,” former Reagan administration diplomat and long-time national conservative activist Alan Keyes has been blocked by the Florida GOP from participating in Sunday’s Fox News presidential debate in Orlando.

The Florida party used a 1% or better showing in polls from three of six polling firms as their criterion for inclusion in the event, even though none of the selected polling firms included Keyes, the latest entry in the presidential race, in any of their statewide surveys to date.

However, had Keyes been included in these polls, objective observers — including staff of some of the polling firms in question — agreed, based on past electoral performance in Florida, and on current polling that is taking place in other states, that he would have received a percentage meeting or exceeding the threshold.

This is pretty ham-fisted. Had Keyes been a hysterical Leftist, he would be playing the “race card” by now. That he has not done so shows what a gentleman he is.

Clearly, the stage is going to be cluttered for the debate and Keyes is nowhere in the polls so the thinking behind his exclusion is clear enough but what an opportunity the GOP is missing by failing to present a black face to the many African-American voters. Dumb and dumber!

Update by Jay: I just might add that, while I don’t agree with everything Keyes has to say, I don’t understand why he isn’t given a chance to shine and actually get into the polls. I don’t see what the other candidates have to fear and think he has a lot of substantial view points to add to the debate. He has as much solid Conservative credentials as many in the race. More than most.

By the way, this is the second debate Alan has been excluded from. Perhaps Dobson should consider Keyes for his ‘third party’ nominee?

I like Keyes though I am more economically liberal than he is. He comes off as extremely strong on the pro-life issue which is a lot better than most GOP candidates.

I’m not in agreement with all he has to say either, but the point is…why exclude him?

I like Keyes! They want to exclude him because they honestly fear him. They’re not worried he will beat them, just that he will embarrass them!

I remember in 1996 when Keyes was excluded from a debate. Other candidates had the decency to say he should have been there. Why is the current field silent?

Allan Keyes was allowed in the Iowa debate, and he was ignored for
the most part. As Rush Limbaugh said today, Allan was probably put
there because Liberals think he is a nut, so having one nut in Ron Paul was
not enough, but having 2 nuts up there it would be better. It’s funny because
before I heard Rush say that I mentioned to someone that he was probably
put up there because Liberals think he is absolutely crazy.
Allan is an intelligent person, and I went on utube and watched
the Obama debates and he killed Barack Obama in them. But Obama
has a softer kinder voice and Allan Keyes gets all agitated so Obama won
the likeability criteria but Allan won the logical arguments.
