Dems Go Off The Rails On FISA

USA Today:

Republicans successfully maneuvered to derail a Democratic government eavesdropping bill Wednesday, delaying a House vote until next week at the earliest.

The bill, which seeks to expand court oversight of government surveillance in the United States, fell victim to a gambit by the chamber’s Republican minority. Democrats were forced to pull the bill from the House floor with no certainty about how it might be revived.

A Democratic staff member said the bill will not be rewritten but substantive amendments may be allowed when it finally does come up for a vote, which is the Democrats’ intention.

The earliest that could happen is next week, as Thursday the House will be busy with an attempt to override a presidential veto of a children’s health care bill.

Michelle Malkin points to Power Line for the quote of the day:

My question is: how did the Democrats sink to a place where they place pandering to left-wing constituencies and sticking it to the president ahead of the safety of Americans, including American GIs? Tonight, more than a few “moderate” congressional Dems are probably wondering the same thing.

Red State:

House Democrats were unable to whip enough votes to get their way. Today, they were against a simple vote on a Republican proposal to protect America’s intelligence agencies ability to fight Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. That’s it – they were against that and fought desperately today to kill it.

When they failed, they pulled the entire FISA bill.

Sister Toldjah:

This is just one more reminder of how much it stinks to have the Keystone Cops in charge of the House and Senate in a time of war. These people don’t have a freaking clue.

Weekly Standard:

This is a reckless way to handle national security. House Democrats have once again shut Republicans out of the debate completely (as they did just yesterday in debate on the Internet Tax Freedom Act). They’ve used their position of power to give terrorists working with WMD a ‘grace period’ while U.S. intelligence agencies go to court for permission to tap them. They’ve abused the process to preserve the fatal flaws in their own bill.

MacRanger:

Now perhaps you know why I say that in the ashes of the next terrorist attack, if it should come, America can thank the Democrats, they’ve made it possible.
