I want to disabuse anyone that there was a bias on my part against Ron Paul by leaving out the straw poll in my story.

Nah, I don't beat that drum. We all know by now that Ron Paul inspires enough passion to win many of these polls with ease. He doesn't win them all though; he usually falls a couple spots if one of two things happen:
- There's a big ticket price attached to the vote
- A name brand candidates shows up

The big story here is simply that Romney underwhelmed big time. Heck, Hunter almost beat him!

You know, I've had a few people email me and ask about why I didn't mention the straw poll. I have to admit that it didn't seem all too seriously conducted (several of the questions were just asked for fun, one being about cats starving or some such thing) so it didn't occur to me that it would be an important part of my story on the Conference.

It's curious that you didn't mention the straw poll, Warner.

Romney was the headliner, challenged only by Hunter and Keyes, yet he still lost the vote. If he was even the least bit convincing, all he'd have to do is walk around shaking hands and kissing babies for an hour and the vote would have been a slam dunk.

Didn't happen though. Straw polls are poor at predicting the winner, but they're very good at filtering out the losers. You can stick that fork in Romney. If it weren't for his personal wealth, he would have already beaten McCain to the exit ramp.
